The Monopoly Championships Roll Into Town Next Week

October 15, 2009 at 1:47 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

The game of Monopoly might be overplayed right now--there are themed Monopoly board games for seemingly everything under the sun from Disney to sports teams to even Juicy Couture, the maker of overpriced velour sweatpants. And of course, even Las Vegas has its own glitzy edition.

But we can still dig up some excitement for 2009 Monopoly World Championships coming to Caesars Palace next week.

To kick off the festivities on October 19th, an oversized replicated Monopoly board will be set up against the Strip in front of Bally's on October 19 measuring 25'x 25' with human Monopoly tokens (dressed up as the hat, dog, car, shoe and thimble) and oversized Chance and Community Chest cards in play. 50 pre-selected finalists will have a chance to compete in the qualifying first round of the Advance to GO competition.

The game is pretty easy. Each finalist will be given a scroll. Five players will play for the $50,000 Advance to GO prize. The remaining 45 finalists will receive cash prizes based on the scroll they receive. The minimum prize is $500 so the odds are way better than piling money into a Wheel of Fortune machine.

Then on October 21, the real competition begins.

The Monopoly World Championships will kick off in The Forum ballroom at 8:30am. This is the first time in 14 years that the championships have been held in the U.S. (No doubt someone begged the Monopoly folks to bring some business back to Vegas.) The games will last until 5pm then pick up on October 22 at 10am.

The public is encouraged to stop by and see how the champions use luck and strategy to raise rents, buy hotels, sell properties, get out jail and most importantly, make money. They'll even get a t-shirt for doing so as the first 600 visitors each day will receive a free Monopoly World Championships t-shirt.

What will the winner of the championship get? Not much, according to Monopoly Documentary. The prize money is only $20,580 - the amount of Monopoly money that comes in every set. Which really, is chump change here in Vegas.

Even worse the rates at Caesars Palace are outrageous during the tournament nights. The room rates on Expedia are listed at an astounding $500 a night. You better Advance to Go and collect several hundred dollars while you're there.
