Yes Virginia, Las Vegas Does Have Winter

October 5, 2009 at 12:04 PM | by BrightLightCity | 1 Comment

Las Vegas sees more than 300 days of sunshine a year, providing another reason as to why it’s one of the nations preferred vacation destinations. However, you might be shocked to hear the desert oasis actually experiences winter and the occasional *gasp* snow fall.

During the cold months (December-March), temperatures can drop as low as 34 degrees but have been known to go farther down the thermometer. The months surrounding winter (October, November and April) can also be cool. Low’s are usually in the 40’s and 50’s. Waking up to a frost-covered Strip is not that unusual. And that same “dry heat” locals pride themselves on in the summer also translates to a “dry winter.”

This timeframe is also some of the wettest. While July-September is Vegas Monsoon season, the colder months sees just as much precipitation as the summer. Rainstorms are known to come out of nowhere and wind advisories are issued at a moment’s notice. Luckily, these conditions pass quickly but can leave some damage in their wake.

What does that mean for packing? It means bring something warm to wear. While hats, scarfs and gloves aren’t usually required (but you may want to pack them and be safe), definitely bring a coat. Sweaters are almost always a sure bet, especially for a night on the town without worrying about coat check. Yes, Las Vegans know about coat check.

May we also recommend you throw in Chap Stick and hand lotion in your toiletries bag? While you’re at it, you may want to add some face lotion—the wind can be fierce. If any space is left, perhaps bring along a small umbrella.

And just because you’re from the East Coast, don’t think you can tough it. Many a tourists are sent running into Vegas’ shopping venues in search of warmer gear.

Always check the weather before a trip to Southern Nevada. Weather.com is always a reliable resource, but you may consider some local sites such as the local newspaper (www.lvrj.com) and TV stations (www.lasvegasnow.com, www.ktnv.com; www.kvvu.com, and www.kvbc.com). All outlets scroll current weather conditions and provide the upcoming five-day forecasts.

PS: Ladies, it’s ALWAYS chilly in showrooms. No matter the time of year, bring a pashmina or shawl. You and your dates will thank us.
