This Man Will Actually Read Your Mind (We Think.)

So you’re in Vegas. You want to see some magic. But you don’t want to get landed with a cheesefest like Xtreme Magic and you’d rather tweeze your own fingernails out than spend money on Criss Angel. What to do?

May we suggest you try a slightly different kind of magic, courtesy of Mr Luke Jermay over at O’Sheas? Mental, his show, has no rabbits out of hats or prancing tigers or show-stealing acrobats. It just has an hour of so-good-I’m-actually-quite-spooked mindreading. Yup, good old-fashioned mindreading.

Jermay’s totally different from what you’d expect from a Vegas performer (from London, not brash, a kind of humble stage presence) but don’t let that put you off. Likewise, the special effects are reduced to a couple of swirly lights and confetti that he sprinkles when he’s taking a while to read minds. Don’t worry though – it just makes the magic stuff even more insane.

The show is simple – for an hour, he just picks on members of the audience at random and reads their minds. And, people, he is amazing. It’s not (just) stupid stuff like what colour knickers are you wearing; he comes out with these incredibly detailed vignettes from people’s lives, along the lines of “March 17 1992, you were on a big wheel with Lola and Steve. Who are they?” And the audience member will, without fail, say, “My first girlfriend, my best friend, and we were on a daytrip to Coney Island.” It is, for want of a better word, mental.

We are totally stumped as to how he does it – back in the UK he worked with Derren Brown, who is equally incredible but claims it’s all scientifically explainable – but Jermay insists he’s reading our minds. Which reminds us – keep those thoughts clean ok?

Sadly, we didn’t get to test his skills first hand as we were just about the only member of the audience that he didn’t pick on (apparently he steers clear of people he’s met before, in case anyone thinks it’s a set up, and – disclosure here – he’d invited us along in a spirit of British solidarity after chatting to us at Anthony Cools’ show at Paris). But everyone he did choose had, without exception, their mind thoroughly blown.

There’s only one problem – we saw the show back in August when it was brand new attendance was pretty poor (there were about 20 people in the audience). Then the other week, up popped this review which disturbed us a little. Even so, we’d say he’s definitely worth seeing (after all, the smaller the audience, the more interaction you’re going to get) and he often tweets special offers or free tickets, which makes it even sweeter.

Oh and we forgot to say – the encore piece involves a cheque for $10,000 which can be yours if you outwit him. Now that would sub a lot of beer pong games downstairs.

Mental runs Tuesday – Saturday, 7pm at O’Shea’s. Tickets $29.95 plus taxes and fees.
