Get Down(town) At Gold Diggers

About two years ago, the Golden Nugget completed an ambitious renovation project. It saw the addition of a posh ultralounge, a refurbished spa, a redesign of the pool area to include cabanas and a giant shark tank and a couple of restaurants owned by the Texas-based Landry’s company, which had recently purchased the hotel.

The capstone on the overhaul, and confirmation that this old-school Vegas institution was restyling itself as a destination for a younger crowd, was the opening of the Gold Diggers nightclub. Prior to Gold Diggers, downtown nightlife seekers had been relegated to watching cover bands perform on the outdoor stages at the Fremont Street Experience while drinking beer out of a football.

While no megaclub à la Pure or Privé and nary a Kardashian in sight, Gold Diggers has a serviceable dance floor and pleasant indoor and outdoor bar areas. It’s located on the second story of the Golden Nugget, so the patio overlooks the neon-lined pedestrian area below and serves as a great spot for watching the curious downtown crowd as well as the light-and-sound show that takes place on the canopy over Fremont Street.

For a modest $5-$10 cover, you can listen to a DJ spin hits from the 70s and 80s (we said they were seeking younger clientele, not Generation Facebook) and swig beer – along with other libations, of course – out of respectable drinking vessels.
