Atone For Your Sins On The Strip

Where: 302 Cathedral Way [map], 89109

It was once said that Las Vegas has more churches per capita than any other city. While this eyebrow-raising stat can’t be verified (and we don’t think umpteen church-shaped wedding chapels count, anyway), it’s true that there’s no shortage of houses of worship in Sin City.

Take Guardian Angel Cathedral, the seat of the area’s Catholic diocese. It’s prominently positioned next door to Wynn and Encore and even survived Steve Wynn's attempt to buy it so he could tear it down and build a parking garage for his resorts. Even though he offered to build a cathedral for them elsewhere, the church declined.

Fun facts: one of the church's stained-glass windows in this mid-century Modernist structure depicts the hotel-casinos on the Strip circa 1963 and rumor has it gaming chips were accepted in the collection baskets back in the day. For those eager to let what happened here stay here, confession is conveniently offered before mass every day except Sunday.

Maybe it’s the Catholic churchgoing community’s affinity for gambling (bingo, anyone?) that necessitates two of this faith’s churches in the vicinity of the Strip. In addition to the cathedral, visitors can attend services at the Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer, which is located across from the Luxor on the south end of the Strip.

And then there’s the still-in-development Strip Church. You can visit their website and see videos of the hipster church founders as they seek to bring Jesus’ message to “porn addicts” at adult entertainment conventions in Vegas and elsewhere. You can also support their mission (or inject some irony into your wardrobe) by purchasing a “Jesus Loves Porn Stars” t-shirt here.

    Hangover

Just wondering, does attending church with a crippling hangover make your prayers count double, or half?
