Hey, Taxi! What You Should Know About Cabbies in Vegas

Cabs are a tricky thing. In Vegas, at least. We get so distracted by ogling the...er...beauty of the Strip, we forget to pay attention to the fare meter. That's why you need to know before you go. Here are our must-know tips about taxis in Las Vegas.

· Automatic $3.30 Fee
Whenever you get into a cab in Las Vegas, the meter automatically begins at $3.30. This is the drop fee for the initial activation of the meter. Ugh. If you hop into a cab at McCarren airport, there is another automatic fee of $1.80. This is usually tacked on by the meter at the end of the ride. After that, each mile is $2.40. A four-minute wait time is $3.00 more. The slow airport shuttles that cost $11 round-trip are starting to look pretty good right now, huh?

· Don't Hail a Cab
There are plenty of cabs in Vegas, but there’s a catch – unlike New York, Chicago or, well, any big city, you can’t simply hail a cab. Because most likely, the cab you are trying to hail as you walk down the Strip is already full. Why?

Because all the empty cabs are waiting in lines at various hotels and at the airport, as those are the places where people are most likely looking to catch a ride. So if you need one, you’ll have to stand in the cab line at whatever hotel you’re at.

Not at a hotel? Get a cab company’s number before you leave.

· Cabbies Love to Talk
Remember, Las Vegas is a city of transients. That being said, these cab drivers could have come from anywhere. And whatever they know, they’ll try to use it to get a bigger tip. Usually, they are harmless and love to blab about whatever is going on-- or these days, not going on--in the city. But sometimes they can turn on you.

We’ve heard cabbies say there’s a $5 charge to go from A to B, you have to tip cab drivers at least 15 percent, etc.

Cabbies are also known to heckle their passengers, as in, “You’re from LA? I know y’all know how to tip in LA, and this is no tip.” Seriously, drivers will say anything and they might even get a little vocally aggressive. Don’t get scared, just blame it on the recession and quickly exit the cab.

· Credit Cards Not Usually Accepted
Again, unlike other big cities around the world Las Vegas cabs don't usually take credit cards. We once inquired about a cab with a credit card machine while waiting at the Flamingo and the taxi line attendant said he could call us one. Um, no thanks. We'd hate to see what that "extra fee" looks like.

Still, we wouldn't blame you if you wanted to read up on taxicabs in Vegas before you get to Vegas. In fact, we encourage you to do that here. So in case you happen to be the only semi-sober one of your friends, you can tell if the cabbie is trying to take advantage of your group's intoxication.

What are you tips for taking cabs in Las Vegas? Let us know here.

    Hailing a Taxi

Actually, you can hail a cab in Vegas, they are just not allowed to stop on the Strip.  If you are near a driveway or somewhere that they can pull off the Strip to pick you up, they'll be glad to do so.

    Talk to your cabbie!

Most cabbies in Vegas have vouchers to get you into nightclubs on the strip with no cover charge. If your group is heading to a club, just ask nicely and be sure to leave a tip. It could save you $50 or so...

    cabs

I was in Vegas 2 years ago on a business trip. When calling the cab company the average wait time for a cab was 30-50 minutes so be sure to call ahead. Also, do not hurry and go down to the lobby of the hotel to wait for your cab ahead of time unless there is actually something you'd like to do there. It's also true what they say about cabbies trying to hustle you into tipping. We were going back to the  off-strip hotel one night and we came across a cabbie that was from Bulgaria (neighbouring country to Romania, where i am from) and when we only tipped him 10% he got got all pissed and started cussing in his own language. Pro-tip - use the bus .

    Walk

I spent 3 days there last week and never got into a cab. Get a hotel centrally located (like New York New York) and venture only as far away as you can walk back. Its cheaper, faster and there is really a lot to see along the way. Here is a short guide -

    Vegas Cabbies

Yes, Cabs in Vegas are alot different than many other cities. I've had some great experiences with cabs from the Orleans Hotel Vegas as well as cabs from the Monte Carlo Vegas.  Full of fun and great memories!
