An Open Letter to Circus Circus

Dear Circus Circus :

You have us so conflicted. Your renovated rooms are nice. Really nice. Surprisingly nice. The dark wood furniture, the plush bedding, the flat screen, the granite in the bathroom. If we didn’t know better, we’d think we were farther south down the Strip, in something with an Italian-sounding name, perhaps.

The people that work in the hotel? Very nice, friendly, and helpful too. Even the food—super cheesy pizza for dinner in the Pizzeria and a light, fluffy egg white omelet with a generous helping of fresh melon on the side the next morning at the Casino Cafe—was pretty good.

The people who stay with you, however... they are another story. We nearly lost it on a group of three men behind us during check-in who felt entitled to continually make comments about how kids shouldn't be allowed in the check-in line. Ummm, if you don't want to see kids running around, don't stay somewhere with circus in the name, let alone twice. Pony up the extra hundred-or-so bucks and go stay at the Wynn.

There was also a "security issue" directly across the hall from our room, and from what we could see through the peephole, it appeared the guests had some kind of cheating device. That’s our best guess, anyway, based on security seizing from the room something that was about the size of a large silver iPOD connected to some kind of cord they were wrapping around it as they left.

As thieves go, we’re much happier staying near someone who’s trying to jack a few grand from the blackjack table by electronic means than someone who’s holding up the casino, but still…we can’t remember a time when we have ever seen something go down like that in such close proximity to us in a hotel on the Strip.

During our recent stay, we repeatedly encountered the crass, the classless, and the clueless. Which made us think, Circus Circus, that maybe your reno’d rooms are a waste of money. If people only come here because it's crazy cheap (going price: $27 a night), and apparently ‘cause they can leave their decorum at home, why bother? Leave the old, worn-out stuff alone and stick to the plan of attracting the lowest common denominator with your hard-to-beat prices.

But, if your plan is to continue to upgrade rooms in the hopes of upgrading the rep of the hotel, the guest quotient is going to have to be considered, which will mean revisiting prices and embarking on some new public outreach.

We at VegasChatter are hoping for the latter. Circus Circus, you could be great. You have all the tools to be THE place for families coming to Vegas (and the pickings are slim for quality family places in Vegas), if you do it right. We know it's a bad time to be redoing your marketing plan and your pricing structure, but we sincerely hope that the end of this economic roller coaster will mark the beginning of a new adventure for you.

Sincerely,

VegasChatter.

    that is crazy!

about the security issue. were they using the blackjack counter iphone application maybe?

i actually think there's a need for an all-out family friendly hotel near the Strip. i'm not saying it should cater exclusively to kids but it seems like circus, circus is half-way there. except if your kid hate clowns (like i did) then you got a problem.

    i agree

i couldn't tell ya what they were using, exactly. i'm, unfortunately, not up on my vegas cheating devices, and i was limited to what i could see across the hall from the peephole. from what i observed, however, it seemed to be a pretty hostile situation, so i don't think they were being harassed for their choice in music.

sorry about your clown hangup. guess i won't be inviting you to ringling bros anytime soon.
