Cirque Du Soleil Releases Glimpse of Its Upcoming Elvis Show

For the first time we can recall, Cirque du Soleil has posted behind-the-scenes footage of an in-development show on its Web site. We don’t even know the official name of the Elvis-themed Cirque show opening at CityCenter’s flagship Aria Resort & Casino (which will open this December), but we can see the cast rehearsing on the Web site and watch a clip of the director, Vincent Paterson, discuss how this show will be different than all its Cirque du Soleil predecessors.

Paterson, for whom this Elvis escapade marks his first foray into Cirque direction, started his career as an actor and dancer. He then graduated to choreography where he worked with music industry superstars in everything from opera to music videos to TV productions. He counts dance queen and king Madonna and MJ among his past collaborators, so this dude sounds like the real deal.

Anyway, what can we expect from this highly credentialed Cirque novice’s Elvis show? Paterson describes it as, more or less, an “abstract biography of Elvis Presley” that utilizes “acting moments spoken in English” – a first for a Cirque du Soleil show. In the Web clip, he goes on to explain the show explores Elvis’ relationships with the people in his life – his mother, his manager – and that the audience will get to see the “sexy,” “bold” and “funny” sides of The King.

No clue as to what the costumes will look like yet (surely the acrobatics call for sequined, unitard versions of the famous jumpsuits?), but Cirque promises that new video clips will be uploaded weekly on the Elvis-Cirque site, so we will be checking back often to see what's there.

Ticket info and a precise opening date have yet to be released, but sure all that will be made public around the time they’re ready to dish on the name. We have our own suggestions, of course, but we’d rather wait for the big reveal.
