The Cosmopolitan Hotel is Determined to Open...Someday

Unlike the poor Fontainebleau Hotel, the long-tortured Cosmopolitan Hotel is getting a new lease on life. The LVRJ reports that the 2,998-room condo-hotel project, which was rescued by Deutsche Bank last year after its original developer entered foreclosure proceedings, has hired former Caesars Palace general manager John Unwin to be its new chief executive officer.

As for which hotel brand will actually run the resort, it's been rumored that a Hilton brand will be in place. Initially, we heard reports that the Hilton boutique brand, Denizen, would open here in Vegas. But then there was a little speed bump in the form of a lawsuit that Starwood Hotels filed against Hilton for stealing proprietary information (and even employees) in the development of the Denizen brand. And that little speed bump has turned into a full-blown road closure as Denizen is now dead in the water.

Therefore, it's likely a Conrad Hotel--Hilton's luxury brand--will enter into The Cosmopolitan instead, although no announcements have been made.

The Cosmopolitan's has actually had a series of other misfortunes before this whole Denizen brouhaha. Aside from the foreclosure, Hearst Communications actually got all riled up about the hotel's name which they said was a trademark infringement of their magazine, Cosmopolitan. Before that, the hotel was expected to fly under the Grand Hyatt hotel flag who then pulled out.

Details on the hotel, which lies between CityCenter and The Bellagio, are still rather scant. There will be a casino and residential condos involved but the LVRJ noticed the hotel has not yet filed for a gaming application. Still, despite the drama, the hotel is saying their opening date will be September 2010. Let's hope by then, visitors will come flocking back to Vegas in record numbers, otherwise there's just gonna be a whole lot of empty hotel rooms in the center of the Strip.
