How We Had Our iPod Stolen At The MGM Grand

HotelChatter's contributor, Londontown, has come over across the pond for a visit to Las Vegas and will be rounding up some Vegas Observations for us this week.

Stupid alert – last week we took to heart the maxim that Vegas is for doing things you wouldn’t normally do, and did a dumb thing. Unfortunately, not a fun dumb thing – no waking up on a sidewalk or forking over a wad to go see Criss Angel. No, we did the dumb thing of letting our security guard down. And we paid for it.

We wanted to book a night on the South Strip through Hotwire, found a four star hotel going for just $66, and snapped it right up, hoping (through cross-referencing on betterbidding.com) that it would be either the MGM Grand or New York New York. Result – it was the MGM, which would have cost us $109 if we’d booked with the hotel direct.

There were no upgrades or freebies thrust our way at check-in, unlike at Planet Hollywood (which we wrote about over on HotelChatter), but we were fine with that, what with the excitement of staying at the MGM.

So excited, in fact, that we did a dumb thing. We went out for the night and tucked our iPod away in the front slot of our suitcase, unlocked. Yes, this was stupid. Yes, we should have used the safe. And in fact, we had already locked away our other stuff, but we were running late and fumbling away with keys and codes seemed like too much hassle at the time.

Whoopsie. When we went to retrieve it the next day, it was gone.

First, we tweeted our loss to the hotel's own Twitter feed, asking what to do, and got ignored. So we hit security, who made us fill out a loss report. That report then gets passed on to Risk Management, who will apparently investigate it. We don’t have much hope for that investigation, though, since the nice security person actually told us we should call up ourselves this week to check what was going on.

The moral of the tale? No matter how urgent it is to get to your hypnotist show/pool party/favoured slot machine, here is always time to use your in-room safe. Not least because filing loss reports and police reports (as that’s what our insurance company is demanding) takes a lot more time. Trust us.

    Re: stolen ipod

It is really sad story... I really regret that your iPod was stolen At The MGM Grand. Now people cannot trust everyone. It is really great that you have shared this story with us, because now people can see what is happening in such hotels like this. I think that staying in hotels we should keep our valuable things like mobile phones in the safe place... I hope that such situation will not happpen for me in the future. Thanks a lot for sharing this useful experience with us.

    Sincerely,
