Hotel Resort Fees: A Disturbing and Annoying Upward Trend in Las Vegas

January 19, 2010 at 9:02 PM | by | Comments (8)

We were pleased to see that the M Resort has finally done away with the $25 resort fee. However, it's a different story over at MGM Mirage properties which either introduced new fees at properties or bumped them up.

In fact, resort fees are now common on the Strip thanks to MGM's bold move. So much so that Harrahs properties (Caesars Palace, Rio's, Paris) are trying to distinguish themselves from the rest by calling out "No Resort Fees!" under their hotel listings on Expedia.

So we figured it was time to update our resort fee list from last Summer. These resort fees listed are per night and do not include taxes. Yup, that's right. You gotta pay taxes on those fees.

Inherently, resort fees are rip-offs but the Vegas ones seem egregious like charging you for incoming faxes and local phone calls. Hello, when was the last time you needed to receive a fax in your hotel room? Also, you have a cell phone. You're not making local phone calls.

Some fees are tolerable, especially when they include internet and the use of the fitness center which a la carte would cost more than the resort fee. Yet while that's convenient for business travelers, folks coming to party on the weekends are still getting screwed.

Sigh. This is just another reminder that it's the casino's world and we're just living in it. If you're averse to paying resort fees, avoid these hotels below.

Our complete list of hotels with resort fee on The Strip in Las Vegas is after the jump.

Sad about Venetian/Palazzo

Treasure Island Resort Fees Update

According to the list at the bottom of the hotel room description page on their website, Treasure Island added 2:1 lunch buffet and 2:1 cocktail vouchers to their resort fees.

Although it's a major turn off, even after adding the $20 per night resort fee to their rates, they were as good or better than other comprable properties on the Strip.  Even so, I would actually be more willing to pay an additional $10 per night and not receive any of the amenities!

On the other hand, the Harrah's properties are so run down a full of low budget customers, I would rather be "forced" to pay the fees than to stay at some of the non-fee hotels in Vegas.

Disturbing trend indeed!

Hi,

Wired and wireless top Speed in-room internet, absolute bounded and 800 calls, circadian bounded newspaper, Cooking School, Importance of Cooking Schools, Cook Magazine exercise center most access, shoe flash service, airport shuttle service, band shuttle service.

Orly?

The resort fee includes nothing. The room rate (which is the rate the hotel says it is and any other mandatory charges, including the resort fee) includes those items. You may as well say that the resort fee includes being allowed to check in.

Circus Circus update $6.95/day + tax

A daily resort fee of $6.95 per day (subject to applicable lodging tax) will be added to the guest room account and includes the following amenities per booked room: Free in-room wireless high-speed Internet service, two (2) premium rides at The Adventuredome, free chips and salsa at The Garden Grill valid for one visit, two (2) free Midway games, two (2) free drinks at West Casino or Slots A Fun bar (or a $5 credit toward other beverage purchase), two (2) Fitness Room passes valid each day of your stay only for up to two (2) people, and free local and 800-number calls up to 30 minutes. Management reserves all rights.

Such services should be free of charge...

It seems outrageous to me that such famous hotels would charge for services such as internet and access to the fitness gym. I figured these services were created to be free of charge and to attract more customers, like a marketing strategy. But, sadly, I am wrong again, they are only rip-offs :(

Resort fees...

These kind of resort fees are pretty ridiculous and it seems that more and more hotels are practicing them. My job implies a lot traveling and I've noticed that there are a lot of Orlando FL hotels that are not using these taxes. And what is more disturbing is the fact that at the most of the hotels, the resort fees include nothing.

Updated List

Unfortunately, the fees have gone up higher since this article and many more Vegas hotels have them. You can find a current updated list on http://www.lasvegasdirect.com/las-vegas-hotel-resort-fees.html
