When Giving the Gift of Wynn, Be Sure to Read The Fine Print

The holidays are here again and if there's a Vegas lover in your life, a gift card to any of Sin City's hotels, restaurants, shows or stores make an easy but exciting gift. (And waaay better than a gift card to Target that's for sure.)

However, if you're considering giving the gift of Wynn Las Vegas which we did last year for our beloved, you should know there is a fee involved. The fee comes into play one year after the card is issued. According to the fine print on the back of the gift card:

After twelve (12) months from date of last use, a $2.50 monthly service fee will be deducted from the remaining balance.

So while it's not as harsh as say MGM's gift card policy, it still stinks. The $200 which we paid in full last year is apparently not good enough for Wynn. The giftee of this card does plan on getting back to Vegas shortly and using this up and to be fair, we were told about this fee upfront, but it's still a bit scroogey.

Know of any other sort ridiculous fees attached to Vegas gift cards? Put 'em in comments below!

Not any more??

I just read, and I can't remember in what paper, about new federal rules regarding gift cards and the associated charges.  As I recall, what you describe MAY be illegal soon.

I'm sure a little internet research will find it..sorry I can't remember, but they are wide-sweeping changes.

Sadly, Not Illegal

While better than no rules, the new gift card rules are still stacked in favor of companies and not consumers.  Instead of allowing immediate monthly fees, companies now have to wait a year before charging the "lucky" recipient.  So, it looks like Wynn is legal...although still not consumer-friendly.

The rules can be seen here (and it includes a link to the 104-page Federal Reserve report for anyone needing help falling asleep): http://credit.about.com/od/credit101/qt/gift-card-rules.htm

While on the subject of gift cards...

I found an old Target gift card that I must have gotten at some promotional event or in the mail. Anyways, it was for a measly $5 and it was from 2004 (!) but Target took it today and thus made my purchase solidly under $30. Just thought I would share that...
