Where Are the Dead Zones in Las Vegas?

March 31, 2010 at 5:47 PM | by Mr Pappagiorgio | 2 Comments

Some folks get fall down blackout piss drunk in Vegas. And sometimes lose track of their group of friends. Or can’t wait to rush back to their room to dial up the digits they got from a nice, quiet man on the street wearing a Girls Direct to Your Room shirt. Or watch go-go dancers for hours then realize they actually do love their ex-girlfriend and need to drunk dial her immediately from the blackjack party pit. (That last one’s not a great idea – trust us on that one).

At these critical points of our lives, we'd like to have reliable wireless service and Las Vegas has the usual options: AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, Cricket. And Clear is offering wireless internet service. But which provides the best coverage here? Hell if we know. As cell towers are added and new phones introduced it’s difficult to keep up with the dead spot of the day. On top of improving service, special events such as huge conventions (think CES) can have a temporary impact on demand, and therefore service.

Some of the notorious trouble spots around the Strip are:

CityCenter: This has been the place where cell phones go to die. In February, we had to walk outside the state of the art Aria building in order to get even a faint voice signal from AT&T or Verizon. Data service – forget about it. Both carriers have announced improvements and while we can say we were overjoyed to get an AT&T signal inside Aria earlier this month, there were still some dead zones and data connections remained pretty slow.

Palazzo: The hotel rooms here seem to be an internet black hole. Our recent experience provided no data signals with AT&T and a Verizon internet card with no service. Even the in-room wifi was less than reliable. Which means not only might you have to use the room phone to order hookers call mom, you can’t easily surf porn make online dinner reservations.

Planet Hollywood: We’ve had good experience with AT&T here, but not so much in the new ph Towers. Here’s hoping that the Towers is similar to CityCenter in that they are just slow in getting cellular service fully operational.

    Miracle Mile

My phone (T Mobile) goes dead in Miracle Mile. Also in the entrance to Vanity. Inside Vanity is fine, just the entrance bit before you go up the escalator (yes, I need reception at all times)

    Encore

My phone (ATT 3g iphone) goes from dead to alive in the Encore lobby.  Data doesn't work at all, voice is hit or miss.
