We'd done our internet homework, and had upgraded to atrium suites - these were huge affairs, two rooms, three TV's and the biggest bath I had ever seen. I felt like a 5-year old when I climbed into that bath. Our view was out to the Rio - a place that even now reminds me of the big monsters from Tron.
We dumped our bags, and went down to the casino - the overwhelming coin noise, bells, whistles and assorted cacophony that assaults you in a casino was too much that first night, and after getting a 20 worth of quarters (Ha! I lost that habit soon enough, just shove the note into the machine, dammit!), we went upstairs to sleep.
When I think fondly back to all my firsts on that trip, some of them are now one and only's: Lunch at the buffet at the Desert Inn (lovely and sedate), hand pays at The Desert Inn and Slots O Fun - my first hand pay was for 60 bucks at Slots o fun!
My first Buffet was at The Stardust and I remember watching a family consume what looked to be a whole seabed full of shrimp, they seemed to make a mini buffet up for their family at their table.
I think my fondest memory was seeing the fountains at Bellagio for the first time. It was hot - start of April - well hot for us, and we were stood outside front and centre waiting for them to start and a cool mist appeared and bathed us in cooling droplets, and then they started - Aaron Copeland's Appalachian Spring, and I remember my world exploding. It was and still is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. I remember falling in love with Bellagio that day.
I loved the hokey Frontier, I fell in love with the old time classic that was the Desert Inn - a place that started my interest in Vegas history, and I mourned the loss of the DI when it went.
The first trip is the discovery, subsequent trips are the enjoyment. I was hungry to go back, and am always hungry to go back - my next trip will be trip 14!
We told you about our first time, now you tell us about yours! Did it hurt? Did you like it? Were things weird afterwards? Could you not wait to do it again? We wanna know! So send us your stories. And yes, we promise to keep your Losing the V-Card experiences totally anonymous.
