Could We Soon Be Boozing at the Baggage Claim?

July 20, 2010 at 7:31 PM | by juliana | 4 Comments

We all know how people like to imbibe on the plane out to Vegas but what about that pesky downtime in between waiting for a cab at McCarran and getting to your hotel before you can have another fix?

Well, it looks like Las Vegas has come up with a solution--putting a liquor store in the D terminal near the baggage claim. The Las Vegas Sun reported over the weekend (on a Sunday too!) that the airport is actively working on putting a liquor store in McCarran:

A five-person airport evaluation team looked at the proposals using nine criteria, including their financial proposal and the applicants’ financial stability, liquor store experience and operating plan. Proposals were rated and Lee’s Runway Liquor collected the most points, with 85.8 of a possible 100.

There is also a possibility that the liquor store would do delivery to the Strip's hotels, which casinos would obviously HATE. But so far that looks to be some wishful thinking. Right now, the proposal is in the hands of the Clark County planning commission who will vote soon. If it goes through, this would be the first airport in the U.S. with a liquor store near the baggage claim. Go Vegas! (?)

Personally, we would love having a liquor store in the airport because we can (on most occasions) handle our liquor. But after having once stood in a taxi line about five people back from a drunk man who stumbled through the line all the while vomiting on himself, we worry about the people who go too crazy on the plane to Vegas. Maybe there could be a breathalyzer test at the liquor store?

Putting a liquor store in McCarran--good idea or not? Let us know what you think

    Baggage claim...

McCarran has the fastest baggage claim I have ever had to endure at any airport anywhere in the world, you wouldn't have time to grab your supplies before your bags were waiting for you.

The International terminal is quick, but the main domestic hall is amazingly fast. By the time I am off the tram from the D gate to the carousels, they are rolling around or even already been taken off the belt!

In terms of getting the hell out of the airport or bagging a good place in the taxi line, I'd prefer to spend 3 bucks more on my supplies when I got to my hotel! Thank god for ABC Stores, the one Downtown is well stocked!

Where the hell are my bags???

I had an unfortunate, isolated incident many years back where I was stuck waiting for my bags at baggage claim for almost 90 minutes.  Incidentally, I no longer check my bags.  A liqour store would have come in handy then. But also, if I could arrive at my hotel and get comfy in my room and not have to go back out to make a booze run, that would be great.

    Never had a prob

But then perhaps my luck is just centred around the airport then and doesn't extend to actual casinos - this would explain the penniless state I leave in sometimes..
