Hey, Who You Callin A Slot?

This week Juliana is off exploring the European Vegas, Monte Carlo. While she's furiously getting drunk taking notes on how Monte Carlo the city is different from that place next door to CityCenter, another East Coaster will be filling in for her--East Coast Gambler aka Marc. Here are his recent Vegas observations. Enjoy!

This trip to Las Vegas had me doing a bunch of things I don't normally do. One of those things was playing in casino-sanctioned gambling tournaments. During my stay at Venetian, I had the privilege of being a part of the least skillful tournament ever - a jumbled prize slot tournament which was being held at the hotel.

Since there's no money involved, the only "skill" needed for the slot tournament was hitting the spin button quickly. There were three rounds, spread over two days and each round lasted about 15 minutes. It was fun, slapping the spin button that whole time, but it was a bit monotonous.

My tournament neighbor was estimating that there were about 3,000 entrants. I didn't do the math on the seats, but I imagine that was close, although I'm sure the actual total was a little less.

The good news is that after the three rounds I found out that I finished in the money at #120! The bad news is that since this was a jumbled tournament I only won $25. But #121 won $1,000! Jumbled tournaments award don't award better prizes for those that finish better. They are randomly generated. Damn! Prizes for this slot tournament totaled $75,00 in slot dollars, which wasn't too shabby.

Even though the slot tournament was mindless I would certainly enter again in the future. This isn't something I'd go out of my way to do, but if I happen to be traveling during tournament time I would play. It was a nice distraction from the norm and more my kind of entertainment than going to a show.

It's always been...

A curiosity I've wanted to explore.  Like open mouth kissing a horse.  I'm a slot fan to begin with and slot tourneys actually seem kinda fun.  Like eastcoastgambler, though, I don't think I would seek a tournament out.  But if I were in the neighborhood, I'd give it a try.
