What Are Your Odds For Winning Megabucks, Too?

So a woman won the Megabucks jackpot last week at ARIA. It's possible that there will be a mad rush to slot machines with big jackpots. There's also a chance that pigs may fly in the next five seconds… nope. Neither happened. Let's look at the chances of really winning a Megabucks jackpot:

Cost - Megabucks is a $1 slot machine. To be eligible for the jackpot, we must play $3.

Odds - Megabucks has 368 positions on each reel. The exact odds of hitting 3 Megabucks symbols are 1 in 49,836,032. Pretty long! Source: Casino City Times

Megabucks is a lottery as well as a slot machine. Megabucks slot machines pay out about 90% vs. 52% for the lotto. The 90% includes all returns on each dollar played. Source: Top Casino Slot

Slot payouts - Slot machines (including video poker) in Nevada legally have to pay out at a rate of at least 75%, although most casinos pay out better than that. Video Poker games (like the games at ARIA) will pay out anywhere from approximately 97-99% at the $1 level ($5/game) on The Strip so Megabucks-type machines can legally be set to pay out less than 75% since they only have to make that rate.

Studies in the past have shown that the Las Vegas Strip pays out about 93% for slot machines. If that's still the case slot machines should pay out around 88%. (We aren't math people so don't take these numbers as law, but they're a good guideline.) You can access all casino gaming payouts in Nevada here if you get bored one day.

Bottom line- The Megabucks slot machine has similar odds as other slot machines with nearly 90% payouts. This is way better chances for a jackpot than 52% with traditional lottery and more fun, too.

On top of the information above, there's said to be a curse to those that win Megabucks. We don't believe in curses, but we also don't mess with them.

With all of this information are we playing Megabucks slots? Probably not. What about you? Let us know in the comments below!
