What the rooms at MGM Grand currently look like.

If you have a favorite room at the MGM Grand on the 12th floor, we're sorry to say that room is going to be off-limits for you for a while. Actually, no. We're not sorry to say that because it means that the rooms at the MGM Grand are finally--finally!--getting a much-needed renovation.

The other week the Wall Street Journal wrote about the upcoming $160 million renovations and featured a rendering of what the new rooms and hallways would look like. While we're still on the fence about the design--it's like if Circus Circus and the new rooms at the Mirage were thrown in a blender together--we are thrilled to hear that MGM Grand is getting a new look. And we're even more psyched to hear those renovations are underway now, starting on the 12th floor.

What the new rooms will look like.

A front desk agent told us that furniture in these rooms started to get moved out last week and that new carpeting is now being put in. There's no "jackhammering" going on yet but our source says that should start this week so make sure you aren't on the 11th floor during your stay.

Obviously, going floor by floor is going to take some time here since there are over 4,000 rooms in the tower but the entire hotel should be completed "a year and one week" from when renovations began. So for those of you that are calendar-challenged, October 2012.

We tried to get access to the 12th floor over the weekend to poke around but it is completely off-limits. Like, you push 12 on the elevator buttons and it just flashes for a second. Boo.

Meanwhile, we spent a night in a room on the sixth floor. Room 6-424 actually. It was nice but that's it--just nice. The rooms actually looked better than they did in late 2006, the last time we stayed there when we spotted a hole on the bedspread cover, but the neutral colors and dark furniture were actually quite depressing.

Oh and don't even get us started on the view. No amount of money for renovations could fix this.

Those ain't pretty

But they aren't any worse than they have. If they get some HDTVs and sweet audio like the Flamingo Go rooms then we can talk.

Ummm

Not sure I am liking the colors on these new rooms. I hope they don't change the big marble baths..that's the best feature in the tower rooms. They could definitely get rid of the tube tvs and that crazy armoire with the funky light stuck behind it......
