Don't Get Lost In The Hunt

October 27, 2011 at 5:01 PM | by | Comments (3)

It's funny, video poker players speak about getting a Royal Flush as if it's the holy grail. We've even talked about it as being our White Whale.

Truth is, most people that play video poker will never see a Royal Flush. The probability of getting a Royal Flush is 00.0025%. This is the probability if you're playing thousands of hands in a row. When we sit down at a video poker machine, we typically don't know when the last Royal Flush was hit so the probability may be a little higher or lower than that number, but it's always going to be a long shot.

Moral of the story is that while we all want to be big winners and get the big hand in video poker, the Royal Flush is so rare that it's not something to be counted on when playing. The reason that a Full House and Flush are key when looking for the best pay tables is that these are the hands that will more often make you a winner or a loser. The probability of getting one of those hands is about 1.1%, which is even better than hands that pay less such as a straight or 3 of a kind.

Don't let the hunt for a Royal Flush ruin the fun playing video poker. While, we'll never be in a long-term winning situation there are still possibilities to have fun and to win. You can find full probability of each video poker hand on Wizard of Odds and to find which casinos have which pay tables and payback percentages you can check vpFREE.

Triple Play Dollar Progressive

We always enjoy your articles, especially the ones about VP.  We experience many of the things you cover.

When we visit LV, we almost always stay at Planet Hollywood and a few years ago, one of our favorite machines was a six bank Triple Play Dollar Progressive VP machine and it was located near the south elevators.  Even though it "beat us up" a lot, we also got lucky on it a few times and it was always fun to play!   Then it was moved right behind the "Extra" bar  (to a three bank of machines) and it still had the $106, 000+  progressive on it for being dealt a RF.  (Through the years, we watched it go from about $50,000 up over the $106,000)  Last trip, we noticed it's gone and no one knew what happened to it.  Just wondering if anyone out there knows what happened to the $106,000+ progressive?  Not the machine, the $.

One other quick question, can anyone post a story?

@jj2

I'll let East Coast Gambler respond to your gaming query, but as far as stories go, yes, anyone can submit a story.

Once you load it up, we'll review it for publication on the site. If you're interested in writing something for us, you are also more than welcome to contact me via email at tips@vegaschatter.com.

Not sure

I usually stay away from progressives and haven't seen anything about the money. If you're a tweeter keep an eye on @phvegas. They usually write about jackpots.

Glad you're digging the VP articles. :)
