World Series of Poker Begins Today

May 31, 2011 at 2:05 PM | by | Comments (0)

The 42nd annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) begins today at the Rio with the Casino Employees No-Limit Hold'em and Heads up No-Limit Hold'em Championship tournaments. These are the first two of 58 events at the WSOP.

There should only be a few noticeable changes in the WSOP this year. Most noticeable will be the impact of online poker's Black Friday earlier this year. Don't expect to see the logos of the seized sites on any players and expect not to see some favorites that were involved with those sites. Chris Ferguson and Howard Lederer are rumored to not be showing as they are said to have been involved with the formation of Full Tilt Poker.

One cool addition to the WSOP this year are rematches of games throughout the history of the event. There are three rematches: 1) 2003 WSOP Main Event: Chris Moneymaker vs. Sammy Farha – Best 2-out-of-3 format. 2) 1989 WSOP Main Event: Johnny Chan vs. Phil Hellmuth – One match. 3) Fan Choice – One match. A special episode of these matches will air on ESPN on July 26.

We detailed another addition to WSOP a couple weeks back on how you can watch the action almost live online if you can't wait for ESPN coverage in July.

Catch or join in on the action at the Rio throughout June and into July. Check WSOP.com for a full schedule of events, including times and buy-ins.
