Self Parking Nightmares On The Strip

January 18, 2012 at 5:19 PM | by | Comments (8)

We think about parking a little more than we're comfortable with, but on a trip to Flamingo last week we came across the worst parking situation we've faced and one we will never deal with again.

The Flamingo is an older property and along with that comes an old parking garage. Even though the parking garage is located across a small street it isn't very convenient. It's not too big of a deal since it's never really cold in Vegas. What isn't cool is the walkway provided by Flamingo. It's not protected by security so this VegasChatter member worried about something unscrupulous happening. There may be security cameras, but that won't stop people with ulterior motives. (Or, us wondering about people with ulterior motives.) Note: There's another entrance on the ground level outside that is probably safer.

The other issue is that since the garage is old, it is very small. We're not sure how an old Cadillac may have been able to navigate through the tight and blind turns into oncoming traffic but it wasn't fun to do in our short compact Jeep. Even though we exited unscathed, we were expecting the worst at each turn.

We ran into a similar instance at the Harrah's garage as well, but were a little less bothered as it felt safer walking outside to the garage and not having a walkway possibly put us in a compromising position. Never again will this VegasChatter writer go into these garages. We will valet at Flamingo and Harrah's in the future.

Additional note: No Chatters was harmed while researching this article.

Monorail view

You get a good look at some of these parking garages from the monorail and monorail stops.
I am always relieved I don't have to park in some of these places. Especially at night.

Your keys, Sir

It strikes me as incongruent the usual parking garage is seemingly no more than an after thought for most resorts.  Why is that?  For, when you think about it, the first and last thing many customers will experience is the parking garage.  Why make that experience such a chore?

I do have an example of a parking garage that is significantly better than most - at the Cosmopolitan.  The light system guiding people to available spaces is a nice touch.  The design is far from sexy, but it has that form-follows- function type of decent looks befitting such a nice establishment.

Imperial Palace is the worst

The Palazzo garage is the best I've seen, Wynn and Mirage/Treasure Island aren't bad.  Biggest nightmare is Imperial Palace.  Multiple partial levels that don't connect, elevators that service only certain sub-compartments of the garage, and a maze-like configuration that has to be seen to be believed.

Good Places

@ UTE - I agree with that experience. I've recently stated using the garage at Bellagio, which is similarly set up to Wynn (go figure) and always leave with in a good mindset.

@ sammasseur - I agree with regards to Palazzo. A few people I know don't like it because they get lost, but I find it pretty easy to navigate and access from the casino. Wynn is one of my fav. places to park. Nice n easy.

@GG I think it tends to be the older places that are the creepiest. It's strange that they're so small too considering cars were so big back when they were built.

That Would Be Me...

I hate the Palazzo. Not confusing, just always crowded whenever I've swung by. Both the valet and the self-park. I spent more than 30 minutes in self park one night just sitting there in an endless line. It was awful.

@702becca

That's awful. Glad I haven't experienced that. I've never waited more than 5 minutes for valet and never waited in line to exit Palazzo. I'll consider myself lucky. :)

Garages

Bellagio is the smoothest garage. Its only traffic light with its own right-turn only lane. It has the security at the entrance. The garage is super intuitive. The elevators are nice.

Hands down, Hooters has the worst self-park garage. It's super tight and the elevators seem like they're on their last legs.

The Flamingo is fine. Crappy elevators, but I feel safe. The garage isn't as tight as the author makes it out to be, however, it is a little confusing.

@BottomlessChips

Agreed w/Bellagio. :)
