Objects in picture are brighter than they appear.

The downtown landscape continues to evolve, particularly the area of Fremont East. A tenant we've had our eye on for quite some time has scheduled a grand opening for Wednesday, December 12, but the owners of Commonwealth aren't prohibiting anyone from bellying up to the bar now (you''ll see what we did there).

Located on the corner of Fremont and Sixth streets, or next to Le Thai for those that recognize the red and white arrow up top, Commonwealth is a 6,000-square-foot cocktail bar with design and drinks inspired by the pre-Prohibition era (aha!). A backroom speakeasy and rooftop bar complete the story.

Amazing or eclectic?

Commonwealth proprietor Justin Weniger says the bar was "designed to emulate an East Coast bar that has been sitting on the same cobblestone street for the past 100 years; but with these amazing, eclectic touches that make it stand apart from any other establishment."

We're off the remainder of the week to enjoy lots some beer, wine, and alcohol turkey with friends and family, but we'll be back next week to fill readers in on whether we were transported back to Beacon Hill by stepping inside Commonwealth. And, of course, will report back on how the drinks stood against our strict series of cocktail tests. For now, we'll let slip that one bum local who passed by outside commented that the "building really spruced up this corner." It's usually a good sign when the homeless neighbors take notice, no?

Fremont East's newest bar is open Tuesday through Friday, 5 p.m. to close; noon to close on Saturday. Yes, you read that correctly. Closed on Sunday. And, also not the use of bar throughout: you won't find food in here. See you next week.
