We are back from quite a long list of off Strip adventures and ready to tell some tales. Some we can share, others... well, it is Vegas. Speaking of which, we heard there was a wolfpack out exploring the desert but, unfortunately, we never crossed paths. Regardless, we spent one of the warmer October days driving and wandering through the seldom explored, but intriguing Mount Charleston, about a 45-minute drive from the Las Vegas Strip.

Many folks, when visiting an area, will often ask to "go where the locals go." Well, many of them like to play at Mount Charleston. First off, it is usually 20-30 degrees cooler than the Las Vegas valley which can offer a nice relief from scorching hot temperatures especially in the summer months.

You literally think you have stumbled upon a jewel in the desert when the majestic green and grey mountains appear on the horizon! Even this Vegas Chatter'er, who has been to the farthest reaches of Canada, still found this area quite unique. It is a night and day difference from any of the surrounding area, honestly you will forget that you are even in Nevada altogether.

Short on time we figured we'd do the highlight tour and chose a few spots that we deemed as "must see," At first, we drove/hiked our way up to "big falls" but, once we saw it, we felt a little mislead; that or maybe we missed the big falls altogether and instead found the baby cousin. Or, maybe we have just been spoiled by seeing the likes of Niagara Falls and others of the sort!

However we were thoroughly impressed with Cathedral Rock, just one of those once-in-a-lifetime things. You really do get a king of the world-type feeling when you get to the top and the views are breathtaking! A little inside tip: if you want the best views of Cathedral Rock itself they can be had from Echo Cliff just next door. (Map here.)

One thing we didn't even think of, until a couple rode by on the trails, is horseback riding! This simple oversight resulted in much more walking instead of relaxing and enjoying the ride. In order to save you from the physical labor we were forced to endure, we have found some info for the Horse Stables at Mount Charleston here.

Before venturing home a stop at the Mount Charleston Lodge is a decent idea to reward yourself with a cold beverage or a snack before headin' back home. The prices are a little higher than they could be, but "when in Rome." The views from the outdoor patio help to rationalize the prices, as they let you take it all in before journeying back to the wonders of The Strip!
