The D Isn't Finished Switching Things Up

January 22, 2013 at 7:14 PM | by | ()

It was our best reopening of 2012, but it appears that the D is still trying to get the F out.

Earlier this month, the hotel's Courtyard Grill morphed into D Grill, a remodeled 24/7 casual cafe just off the second floor casino. The D promises that everything on the menu is made "completely from scratch using only fresh, never frozen ingredients."

And, come February 1, Don B's Steakhouse will become Joe Vicari's Andiamo Italian Steakhouse which we will just call Joe's. We also feel we should give the D props for not going with D Steakhouse. It must have been a close vote, though. Joe's is actually a chain restaurant from, you guessed it, Detroit which is what inspired -- in part -- the hotel-casino's new name. (It was formerly Fitzgeralds.) Expect housemade bread, "award-winning sauces," and handmade pasta when it makes its debut. It will be open nightly from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Joe's joins another Michigan import at the D, American Coney Island, a chili dog joint.

The D tells us that no more changes will occur on the food front. Its entertainment offerings are another matter. As we've already reported, Raack N Roll will rock the hotel starting February 1. Meantime, comedian/magician Adam London will hit D showroom beginning February 7. And, rumor has it that another, unnamed show will soon make its D-ebut as well.

I'm sad...

I loved Don B's. I'll try the new joint...maybe opening day. I'm a concierge and always asked Don B's to be on opentable, but they never did it. I still sent people there.

Don "B"s Aint what they want it to be.

I stayed at Fitz for years. I went into Don "B"s one night and the waitress went on about how she had to teach 2 Hispanic guys in the back to cook. SO... I went around to the second floor elevator and looked into the tiny kitchen. Low and behold, there were 2 Hispanic guys in there yelling at each other in Spanish. Unbelievable!
2 minimum wage dudes trying to be Emeril. NOT!

D Grill mini review

Ate at the D Grill the day after they opened in December (think it was the 30th) and the food was pretty good. The servers had a rudimentary knowledge of the menu, but the service was absolutely fantastic and every staff member made us feel more than welcome. Will certainly repeat.
