Life Will Be A 'Picnic' At Downtown Grand

When it comes to the under-construction Downtown Grand, we went from 'does Downtown Vegas really need another hotel-casino' to 'how fast can this thing open?' After a media sneak preview which allowed us to get all up in the Kool-Aid of Fifth Street Gaming, we have discovered that we can't get enough of it.
Since then, we have shown you glimpses into the Downtown Grand's rooms, its restaurants and room service, and have answered some of your top questions about the property as a whole. Now, we look at another way Downtown Grand will change the downtown game -- its pool.
Not only a pool, it will be a sprawling 35,000-square-foot rooftop experience dubbed, Picnic. The design board which serves as the inspiration for what is to come can be seen above. Downtown Grand refers to it as an "urban rooftop pool retreat." And, it sounds like it will instantly become the top pool in the neighborhood. (Sorry, Golden Nugget.)
Executives say the pool will be an oasis, with not just the obvious pool and accompanying seating, but also a full restaurant, a bar, outdoor gaming, screens for movie viewing, and -- wait for it -- grass. Yes, real grass. And, the coup de grace? It will be open to non-guests. (Although, we're not sure yet if there will be a fee attached to that; but, at least you won't be shown immediately back downstairs if you don't have a room key.)
The scope of the pool experience required Downtown Grand to sink four large pillars through the space destined to be their casino. But, instead of being an eyesore, officials are creatively using the posts to give the casino's center bar the appearance of a furnace in a nod to the neon factory which once sat on the site.

Old rendering alert! Provided just for perspective!
