10 Reasons Prissy Girls Should Go Downtown

January 21, 2013 at 7:41 PM | by | Comments (4)

This VegasChatter writer loves the Las Vegas Strip. It’s high profile, glamorous, ever-evolving and over-the-top, just like her. Going to Downtown Vegas after partying on The Strip is like downgrading from a high-end department store to a swap meet. Sure, you’ll find similar things, but they won’t be as nice or expensive and it smells. But, if you can get past that, and all the homeless people, you’ll end up having a good time in a much less pretentious atmosphere!

Here are 10 reasons why even the prissiest of girls should visit Downtown Vegas:

1. Casual Atmosphere

This VegasChatter'er loves her stilettos and sparkly dresses, but for those nights when you feel more like flats and (cringe) wearing leggings as pants, there’s always downtown. No judgment or heel rats, just fun.

2. Downtown Cocktail Room

This is one of the places that made Downtown worth the trip. Recommended by one of our hipster BFFs (read: bike-riding, PBR-drinking writer), the nearly hidden spot is dark, plush and serves artfully crafted cocktails with ingredients we’ve never heard before.

Sometimes a full restaurant review just won't do. Perhaps, there wasn't time for an A-Z meal. Maybe it's a restaurant we've written about before. Or, a dog ate our good pictures. There may still be that one dish worth writing about. A new one, an old one. A newsworthy one or a memorable one (for better or worse). It might be the one dish out of the whole experience that gets us to return. Or stay away. We present you with Just One Dish.

A stop at downtown's Bar + Bistro earlier this year impressed us with artsy touches but its flavors fell pretty flat. Perhaps in a forgiving mood or maybe just gluttons for punishment, we revisited recently for the hangover brunch we'd heard plenty about.

Is Bar (And) Bistro's Menu A Work of Art?

Bar+Bistro couldn't be more entrenched within the Las Vegas Arts District community. Annexed to the Arts Factory building, it also serves as that center's caterer for events and gallery openings. From the outside it looks like it could have been plucked from Austin, Texas and the rustic touches set it far apart from the Strip, or its not-so far away neighbors on Fremont Street.

From the artisan copper-bound menus, to the art on the walls, they send up a flare to make this your destination of choice if you are spending the day exploring the galleries. Although naming yourself Bar+Bistro might confuse prospective customers. The intent of chef Beni Velàzquez is to create a pan-continental fusion of Latin ideas and flavors. Not really what you'd expect from a bar, or a bistro. There are influences from Europe, Latin-American and the U.S. Lots of them. The menu is long. Perhaps confusingly long. And in the dark mood of the restaurant it takes time to peruse. Inside you'll also find explanations of the dishes and even a considerate, and careful, vegan section.
