Get A Free Tat, Drink For Life* at Commonwealth

February 5, 2013 at 12:04 PM | by | Comments (0)

Considering your first or next tat? As we've documented before, ink inspirations comes in different strokes for different folks. If you haven't been flushed with royal inspiration, aren't flush with Laura Croft money, don't want Caesar to stay here or Bill's closure didn't strike the same chord as Sahara's did, downtown's Commonwealth wants to tickle your fancy with a tat idea.

10 Reasons Prissy Girls Should Go Downtown

January 21, 2013 at 7:41 PM | by | Comments (4)

This VegasChatter writer loves the Las Vegas Strip. It’s high profile, glamorous, ever-evolving and over-the-top, just like her. Going to Downtown Vegas after partying on The Strip is like downgrading from a high-end department store to a swap meet. Sure, you’ll find similar things, but they won’t be as nice or expensive and it smells. But, if you can get past that, and all the homeless people, you’ll end up having a good time in a much less pretentious atmosphere!

Here are 10 reasons why even the prissiest of girls should visit Downtown Vegas:

1. Casual Atmosphere

This VegasChatter'er loves her stilettos and sparkly dresses, but for those nights when you feel more like flats and (cringe) wearing leggings as pants, there’s always downtown. No judgment or heel rats, just fun.

2. Downtown Cocktail Room

This is one of the places that made Downtown worth the trip. Recommended by one of our hipster BFFs (read: bike-riding, PBR-drinking writer), the nearly hidden spot is dark, plush and serves artfully crafted cocktails with ingredients we’ve never heard before.

Prohibition-Style Hootch Is The Bee's Knees In Vegas

December 19, 2012 at 12:51 PM | by | Comment (1)

Ever since Boardwalk Empire hit the airwaves, people can’t get enough of the Prohibition craze. Hot vintage jazz and handcrafted cocktails are gaining in popularity, and these things can be found in Las Vegas, both downtown, on The Strip and off.

We've covered downtown's Commonwealth already. It is a newcomer to the awesome Fremont East part of town. What we didn’t see before was the top secret speakeasy hidden inside the bar. Recently, that changed. This writer was sitting in the bar talking to a few pretty girls (how we roll) when the manager of the bar invited them to take a peek. We, of course, tagged along.

Pub Crawl? Passe. Cycle Pub Vegas? Ding, Ding, Ding!

Where: 201 N. 3rd Street [map], 89101

This is a PR photo. We're blaming the quality of the photos to come on being in motion,
*not* on being in our cups.

Who wants to cruise downtown in a cab or in your own vehicle? We prefer the open-air Cycle Pub!

We absolutely love downtown Las Vegas, drinking and riding a bike. And, thanks to owner/operator Russell Davis, we did all three as we climbed aboard his Cycle Pub Vegas. Okay, it's not really a pub, as riders aren’t allowed to drink and pedal at the same time, but Davis’ bicycle built for 14 took us on a unique pub crawl to our favorite downtown drinkeries -- where we moseyed up to the bar for Moscow Mules and Stellas.

Sizing Up Downtown's Commonwealth

Where: 525 E. Fremont Street [map], 89101
November 26, 2012 at 7:19 PM | by | Comment (1)

Last week, we teased a review of downtown's newest 6,000-square-foot, pre-prohibition-inspired drinking establishment, Commonwealth. Owners aimed to emulate a hundred-year-old bar plucked from the cobblestone streets of an east coast neighborhood.

From the outside, they nailed it. Our first reaction to the photo up top was memories of drinking our way through old Boston neighborhoods. Commonwealth already looks like it's been a Vegas staple for generations. Even a local street dude was overheard observing the building really spruced up this corner. One of VegasChatter's followers tweeted at us an impression of pretentiousness, though, so not everyone's fallen head over heels yet. That tweet's since been deleted so perhaps the pretentious was a bit presumptuous.

Commonwealth Now Serving Drinks Downtown

Where: 525 E. Fremont Street [map], 89101
November 21, 2012 at 8:58 PM | by | Comments (0)

Objects in picture are brighter than they appear.

The downtown landscape continues to evolve, particularly the area of Fremont East. A tenant we've had our eye on for quite some time has scheduled a grand opening for Wednesday, December 12, but the owners of Commonwealth aren't prohibiting anyone from bellying up to the bar now (you''ll see what we did there).

Located on the corner of Fremont and Sixth streets, or next to Le Thai for those that recognize the red and white arrow up top, Commonwealth is a 6,000-square-foot cocktail bar with design and drinks inspired by the pre-Prohibition era (aha!). A backroom speakeasy and rooftop bar complete the story.

Commonwealth Close To Its Downtown Debut

Where: 525 East Fremont [map], 89101
November 12, 2012 at 8:39 PM | by | Comments (0)

Three months after it had hoped to open, Commonwealth appears to finally be close to giving us another place to drink on Fremont Street. And, no, there can never be too many.

A stroll through Fremont East on Saturday found a dark-colored building that looks to be close to being finished. A bright yellow sign heralds the bar's name while a peacock roosting on its corner announces all we need to know, cocktails. We even spied chandeliers twinkling through the glass.

Resto Roundup: Bacchanal Bumps Prices, SHe To Get Theatrical, And More

October 16, 2012 at 12:33 PM | by | Comments (0)

If you were planning to get your money's worth out of Bacchanal Buffet at Caesars Palace, it's time to go a size up on the stretchy pants.

Vegas Seven is reporting that, since opening, the buffet that's become the talk of the town, has also become the priciest in town, too. After beginning at $39.99 for dinner, the weekly magazine states that the buffet has dished out two price hikes and now requires $44.99 a person. That's with a reduction in Total Rewards savings, too, so your card will only knock $2 bucks off dinner now instead of three.

Resto Roundup: Javier's Coming In October (Maybe) to Openings, Construction and More

September 24, 2012 at 5:43 PM | by | Comments (0)

Vegas.

After two delays, Aria is hoping October will be the charm when it comes to debuting Mexican restaurant, Javier's. The CityCenter resort now says the resto (shown above) is coming "this October."

The design is an, erm, interesting one, but one that seems to poorly echo the poolside bar near Javier's Los Cabos locale at the Cabo Azul resort. Which is weird 'cause the same designer is behind both, but a casino does not a beachy backdrop make.

Los Cabos.

Also, still set on a mid-October arrival (for now) is Bagatelle at Tropicana. Urban Daddy has posted a date of October 20. But, we'd write that down in pencil, people.

We Won't Discover A Brand New Children's Museum This Year, And Other Vegas Delays

September 17, 2012 at 4:40 PM | by | Comments (0)

While the people have spoken when it comes to the age old question of kids and Vegas, families who come anyway (or live here) will still be disappointed to hear that Vegas' new multi-million dollar children's museum won't open this fall, after all.

The Discovery Children's Museum has quietly pushed back its opening from this November to early 2013. More specifically, February 2013. For now.

Fremont Street A Cacophony Of Construction, Experiences

August 16, 2012 at 6:11 PM | by | Comments (2)

'Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we will die.'

Not exactly the welcome to Fremont East we had expected yesterday, but one of the first things that was said to us as we meandered around. (That's if we skip over being asked for our name, our number, if we lived around there and for spare cash by a series of random homeless men.)

We can see the vision for Fremont Street, Fremont East and the larger downtown Vegas experience, but that's all on paper right now. Or, in the midst of construction. The wail of saws, hammering of nails, and the whine of machinery were the first sounds to hit our ears late yesterday morning. What's to come is exciting, but what is right now made us apply Purell about three times in the car afterwards.

We started our walk to check up on the state of things downtown in Fremont East at the corner of Fremont and 6th, after parking our car in a metered spot just a few steps away. On one side we were flanked by the Fremont Country Club, still a work in progress with an opening of fall 2012 painted on its side. (From what we've seen, don't look for it before mid-October.) To give you some perspective, Fremont Country Club is right across the street from El Cortez.
