A room at Delano.. Miami.

First expected to debut this December, the Delano won't officially take over THEhotel at Mandalay Bay until early 2014 now. But, that doesn't necessarily mean you have to wait until the new year to check in.

Snooping around the main Delano website lead us to this surprising declaration:

Is Vegas, Like, Totally Going South Beach On Us?

March 18, 2013 at 5:31 PM | by | Comments (8)

With last Friday's news about Gansevoort Las Vegas (and, if you haven't heard, this is what Bill's will become), we couldn't help but wonder -- Is Las Vegas going totally South Beach these days?

The additional upcoming openings of SLS Las Vegas and Delano at Mandalay Bay as well as the already here presence of Bagatelle and STK (both in SoBe, too) sure makes it seem like it. Heck, Las Vegas even has a Fontainebleau, totally abandoned, of course. And, both cities have a Canyon Ranch spa, too!

True, Gansevoort is first and foremost a New York City kid (named after a street in the Meatpacking District), but for a few years, they had a huge hotel in South Beach and it was quite the party monster. (Until they couldn't make their mortgage payments and were kicked out by the bank. You can read that drama here on HotelChatter.)

For those that haven't been to Miami in recent years, the city has come a long way from the Golden Girls/Cocaine Cowboys days of the 1980s. The South Beach vibe today is now known for its nightlife (especially big clubs like the Liv at the Fontainebleau), its ever-changing boutique hotel scene (Ocean Drive along the beach is the heartbeat, but so are Collins Ave and the up-and-coming Brickell area), its celeb-frequenting, celeb chef-helmed restaurants, luxury shopping and its eclectic international denizens (both the permanent and seasonal kind).

Oh, and we can't forget about the water and the heat which are the two biggest reasons why most folk in South Beach are nearly naked at all times. Sound familiar? With the exception of hurricanes and Miami's terrific art and design scene, we'd say Las Vegas and Miami are freakishly identical, after all.

The 10 Game-Changing Openings Of 2013

January 2, 2013 at 8:49 PM | by | Comments (0)

The list of anticipated openings for 2013 is already an impressive one. We could list off every single one, but we'd rather tell you about the ones that matter. This year will bring more new restaurants, hotel concepts, attractions, nightlife, and dayclub options. Here are the 10 we consider game changers:

1. Downtown Grand (November)

Not just the second coming of a shuttered downtown hotel-casino, Downtown Grand will forever change downtown by luring visitors away from Fremont Street.

2. The Linq (December)

We're still not sure if we love it, hate it, or meh it, but The Linqth cometh, and will be sure to cause many a tourist to take a detour away from The Strip.

Delano To Be In Vegas For At Least 10 Years

November 5, 2012 at 11:39 AM | by | Comments (4)

Delano, Miami style.

The Delano won't officially take over THEhotel at Mandalay Bay until the end of 2013, but when it does expect the brand to stay on the Vegas Strip for at least a decade.

During its quarterly earnings report on Friday, Morgans Hotel Group (Delano's parent brand) stated that its agreement with MGM Resorts (Mandalay's parent group) would be part of a 10-year licensing agreement, with the ability to tack on two five-year extensions. To bring the Delano brand to Las Vegas, MGM Resorts has agreed to foot all the costs of the renovations and will manage the new property, too, while Morgans will kick back and collect (some of) the dough:

The Delano Is Coming, And So Is The Price Hike

August 27, 2012 at 1:33 PM | by | Comments (6)

The Delano will bring a Miami vibe to The Strip late next year when it takes over THEhotel at Mandalay Bay. It also will bring Delano pricing.

USA Today reports that THEhotel is bringing in "an average daily rate of about $189 a night," but quotes an executive as saying "improvements to the hotel should bring higher rates." A comparison rate check of Delano South Beach shows the resort commands an average rates of around $349 a night. Will the Vegas rate be similar? We'll need to wait and see, but at least we know where things could be heading.

(Side note: Delano South Beach offers Florida residents a 15 percent discount so Nevada residents could look forward to the same savings.)

THEhotel Will Be Replaced With The Delano Las Vegas in 2013

August 6, 2012 at 6:33 PM | by | Comments (5)

Major news today outta The Mandalay Bay--THEhotel will cease to exist by the end of next year and in its place will be The Delano Las Vegas. We can't believe it either! THEhotel will be no longer? The Delano is actually going to open in Las Vegas? Is this Opposite Day?

For those of you who might be asking, "What is a Delano?", allow us to fill you in. The Delano is a famous hotel in South Beach from the boutique collection of Morgans Hotels (Morgans also used to run the Hard Rock Las Vegas a few years back.) It has been long-favored by celebs, pop stars, artists and fashion designers who put up with sparse, minimalist rooms in order to have direct access to the beach and to be seen at the hotel's hot restaurants and nightclub.

Rates at the Philippe Starck-designed hotel (this is the man who will also be doing the SLS Las Vegas) can reach upwards of a $1,000 during high season. Once upon a time before the economic woes of 2008, a Delano was set to open in Boyd Gaming's fancy Echelon complex. That dream never became a reality and the lot on Las Vegas Boulevard on the site of the old Stardust is still empty.

For a look-see around the original South Beach property, check out HotelChatter's photo gallery featuring some highlights of the hotel's design.

But don't stare too long. While the Delano Las Vegas will have elements of the South Beach hotel's personality, no two Delanos are meant to look alike so when all 1,100 of THEhotel's suites get redesigned, the spot will look not just entirely different but entirely new.

And it's not just the rooms that are getting redone inside THEhotel. Here's what else will change:
