How Does Gordon Ramsay Steak Stand Up A Year Later?

When Gordon Ramsay Steak opened at Paris Las Vegas last year, it was the toughest table in town but garnered pretty darn good reviews from the fortunate early-goers. Another VegasChatter writer gambled on the menu's higher prices and walked away with one of his top five steaks of the year.
With Ramsay expanding his restaurant empire seemingly into any space with a heartbeat over the past year, we wondered how his Vegas first held up under his ever diversifying attention. When the occasion recently arose to splurge on a unique dining experience, this writer took the plunge for his first visit to GR Steak.

The Early Word Is That Vegas Is Still Gaga For Gordon

Coming in 2013 -- Gordon Ramsay Pizzeria to Bally's? Gordon Ramsay Italiano to The Linq? We'll just have to wait and see after 2012 brought us a steakhouse, pub and burger bar all by the loud-mouthed chef. The last two opening just within the last week.
Gordon Ramsay Steak was an instant hit; so much that the hungry are still finding it hard to book a table, even though it opened at Paris back in May. Now, Gordon Ramsay Pub & Grill at Caesars Palace and Gordon Ramsay BurGR at Planet Hollywood have expanded the chef's Vegas dominance.

The Top 5 Steakhouses In Vegas (That We've Tried This Year)

We love steak and are always excited to try a new or different steakhouse. This year brought a few new steakhouses to Las Vegas. Some were winners and some weren't. We visited many of them, but we also visited many existing steakhouses for the first time, too.
Here are our favorites among what we've tried out this year. You can see last year's favorite steakhouses here.

Gordon Ramsay Steak May Be Too Busy To Answer The Phone, But Is Still 'Simply The Best'

When it comes to the now four-month-old Gordon Ramsay Steak, the raves continue with Yelpers calling it "simply the best," "worth every penny" and "OUT-FREAKING-STANDING." That's if you can get a reservation, though.
A VegasChatter fan dropped us a line yesterday to let us know that getting someone on the line at the popular Paris steakhouse was proving neigh impossible for him:

The Good and The Bad at Gordon Ramsay Steak
After seeing so many positive early reviews for Gordon Ramsay Steak this writer had to tie on his bib and check it out. There was a lot to like and some things to dislike. First and foremost, we had one of the best tasting steaks we've had all year. However, while the steak tasted great, it had way too much fat, was slightly undercooked (which we don't mind) and possibly made us sick.
The vibe at Gordon Ramsay Steak was great. It was an anachronism. This restaurant was definitely too cool to be in Paris Las Vegas. The decor had sexy curves, cool music and new technology -- things we're not used to seeing at a restaurant at a Caesars property.
We recommend taking a walk to the restroom to actually see the entire room and all of its curves. This will allow you to get a perspective of how beautiful the Gordon Ramsay Steak is that you would may not see from your seat.

What's The Early Word on Gordon Ramsay's Steakhouse?
Gordon Ramsay finally opened his long-rumored and awaited steakhouse earlier this month to much fanfare and flashbulbs. He won us over with his animated enthusiasm while a peek at the restaurant's extravagant details and marbled meats wowed us.
We stated we couldn't wait to go back, and we will. But, we're a curious set here at VegasChatter. (Recall that we stopped back just to spy the menu before it was online.) So, with a restaurant as anticipated and hyped as Ramsay's, we couldn't help but peek at what early diners are saying about the place.
It's a small sample size so we wouldn't form a final opinion on it yet, but what sticks out in early reviews? Trolling Yelp, we learned of a limited edition tasting menu that includes Bread, Colcannon, Roasted Beets, Asparagus Soup, Roasted Beef Wellington, and Tropical Panna Cotta. Fans Diners have been most excited to take home the autographed tasting menu included with the meal. For the thirsty set, the cocktail menu is in the form of an iPad. Of course, it is.
Here are excerpts from the good, the bad, and the mixed reviews on Yelp:

Gordon Ramsay Came, Saw and Conquered Vegas (And Us)

Moments before Chef Gordon Ramsay arrived to meet a press pack in his new Paris casino restaurant, there was a palpable wave of excited anticipation. For a known phenomena in the culinary and showbiz world, this was an unknown situation.
How bold, brash or forceful would Gordon Ramsay crash into this very crowded and very competitive dining arena? He choose to arrive as himself, talk with passion and won us over. It was masterpiece of publicity theater. But, also a genuine insight into the combination of pure charisma and calculated persona that creates a brand. And, a brand that sells.

He's a double digit Michelin Star chef, but with a familiarity that reaches to the flip-flop crowd steps away from his kitchen. His tutelage under Vegas neighbors Guy Savoy and Joël Robuchon could have prompted a push to a restaurant of light subtlety and finesse, but we arrived into an immersive environment of steel, reds and branded Gordon all around us. And there, in front of us, the real brash, free talking and highly opinionated Ramsay. But, with a frequent humbleness in his vocal admiration for his past mentors and peers. He had something to prove to the culinary profession. And, to prove something to himself. It was evident that Las Vegas needed to be conquered by Gordon. And, he has come in strong.

What's Eating At Us About The Strip

To be honest, this makes us feel old. Please forgive our "get off my lawn" moment while we reflect on recent dining experiences on the Vegas Strip. This isn't meant as a rant, but more of a heads up and warning to prepare you for future trips.
Eating on The Strip is damn expensive!
In the past couple of weeks, we've eaten $20 burgers at both Public House and Central. We've paid $20 for fried rice at China Poblano and we've seen nachos at Carlos'n Charlie's between $15 and $20. Nachos! Seriously?!

Gordon Ramsay Steak Now Open At Paris

The official opening is this Friday, May 11 but if you're in town now, a call to the hotel confirms that Gordon Ramsay Steak inside the Paris is already welcoming the general public. (It opens at 5 p.m. and is located right off the casino floor if you want to know specifics.)
Pulse of Vegas blog gave us a first look at the restaurant's gorgeous tartare red interior a few days ago as well as some yummy food shots. But, VegasChatter's Richard Lane scored our exclusive on just how much that prime beef will cost you. (And, by scored, we mean walked by the digital menu and snapped a shot, but an exclusive is an exclusive.)

Resto Roundup: MGM To Serve Kustom Pizza, Carlos'n Charlie's Now Open, and More

When we were predicting the ins and outs of dining in Las Vegas for the year ahead, we didn't see anywhere near this many pizzas in our wood-fired ovens. Just as with candy shops and steakhouses, it seems like there can never be enough pizza joints in Vegas now, either.
On a stroll through the basement lower-level of MGM Grand (the place that used to be called Star Lane but is now evolving to something more.. we'll explore that next week), we discovered a construction wall for Project Pie -- A Kustom Pizzeria. The "k" is theirs. We fear a Kardashian konnection. First pizza, next the world mayorship? Ok, there's probably not a Kardashian angle. (We hope.) A Google found a Foursquare location for another Project Pie in Jersey with the recommendation, "Try the pie yo its bangin' holmes." There's a connection we can dig.

Bleep, Bleep, Bleep... Gordon Ramsay Coming To Vegas, After All

Ok, we're no longer confused about wicked whispers that claimed Gordon Ramsay would open a restaurant at Paris Las Vegas last June. A deadline that came and went further racy rumors.
But, this morning, Caesars Entertainment officially announced that the foul-mouth chef really was coming to The Strip, debuting Gordon Ramsay Steak this coming spring. (fingers crossed)
