Are Family Reunions the New Bachelor Parties?

August 16, 2010 at 6:11 PM | by juliana | 2 Comments

What we think this relationship is: Aunt, mom and daughter.

The AP has an article out today about family reunions being held in Vegas. To us, this is sort of a genius idea. After all, Vegas has pretty much something for everyone from the grannies who like slot machines to the young bucks who want to celebrate their totally real IDs at the clubs to older couples who just want to have a good meal and see a show.

And despite the nickname Sin City, Vegas is rather kid-friendly what with the Secret Garden at The Mirage, the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay and the M&M World smack in the middle of the Strip. (Just try and steer the kiddies away from the card-snappers and remember, no strollers allowed at Wynn ever.)

Here's an example of how a Vegas family reunion could work:

Georgia resident Gary Jones organized a family reunion at Excalibur last month. About 75 members of his wife's family, including small children, stayed for four days. The group saw shows, held a banquet and took short trips around the valley. "There's a lot to do in Vegas other than gamble," Jones says. "It's very kid friendly."

Five Reasons Why Kids Will Love the Palazzo

Where: 3325 Las Vegas Blvd. S. [map], 89109
March 30, 2010 at 4:05 PM | by Jennifer Kester | 0 Comments

We're not keen on bringing kids with us every time we come to Vegas but if we must (and sometimes we must), we'd like to pick a place that we can enjoy just as much as our spawn. Excalibur and the Luxor might be more popular hotels with the kiddies for their themed decor, but the the castle and Egyptian shticks only go so far, especially with parents.

The Palazzo may not have the typical draws for kids—there's no "Tournament of Kings" here—but its perks make it the perfect hotel for the short set.

Find out five reasons why kids love suites at the Palazzo after the jump.

Michael Jackson's Kids 'Party' at The Palms Pool

We could hardly believe when we were heard that kids were splashing around The Palms pool, best known for the decidedly adult Ditch Fridays pool parties, but these were not just any kids either. These were Michael Jackson kids. People reports:

Prince Michael I, 12, Paris, 11, and Prince Michael II (a.k.a. "Blanket"), 7, were spotted at the Palms Casino Resort's pool sipping on virgin strawberry-banana daiquiri's on Sunday. They, along with three friends, dunked each other in the pool and swam around for more than two hours. Blanket, wearing a life preserver, even showed some of his moves, dancing on the edge of the pool before jumping in the water.

In Vegas, Adults Have Sin City While Kids Get 'Playful City USA'

July 22, 2009 at 3:23 PM | by Erika Pope | 0 Comments

If you’re looking for a place where the kids can let off some steam and avoid becoming little slack-jawed zombies as a result of Strip-style overstimulation, then consider a trek to one of nearby Henderson’s award-winning public parks.

As reported in yesterday’s Review-Journal, Henderson recently received the designation “Playful City USA” for its quality and quality of play spaces. Included among Henderson’s impressive roster of 46 parks are those that feature the all-important, shaded playground equipment and “splash pads” – areas paved with recycled rubber and outfitted with “water rainbows, water trees, water cannons and waterfalls” – designed to give tykes a refreshing and safe water-play experience.

When a Chocolate Fountain Just Won't Do, Take the Ethel M Factory Tour

Where: 2 Cactus Garden Drive, Henderson [map], 89014

The Entertainment Capital of the World is known – and rightly so – as a one-industry town. But that doesn’t we don’t have our own little enterprises going. Let’s see: there’s Ron Lee’s World of Clowns (freaky!), an Ocean Spray cranberry plant and the parent company of a rocket fuel producer (they moved the actual plant to Cedar City, Utah, after an explosion here in Vegas in 1988).

Anyway, our favorite boutique industry here in Vegas has to be Ethel M Chocolates. You may have noticed the Ethel M Chocolates shops at McCarran Airport, where they sell fancy truffles and various chocolate assortments gift-boxed in Vegas-themed or seasonal packaging. Perhaps you’ve even been compelled to purchase one as a last-minute gift for the folks back home.

But you can go beyond the chocolate shop by touring the Ethel M factory in Henderson, about 15 minutes away from the Strip. Best part? The free tours daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., during which visitors can watch the bonbons being made and enjoy what some would describe as “generous” free samples. C’mon. Everybody gets at least a little excited about free chocolate! It brings out the kid in us all and it beats staring at an (albeit elaborate) chocolate fountain.
