When Vegas Kids Around

August 13, 2013 at 2:41 PM | by | Comments (2)

Whenever mom and dad took a trip without lil' Pappagiorgio, their return was always highlighted with the much anticipated presentation of souvenirs from the trip. That pressed penny from Paris, the oversized t-shirt from Texas or last minute magnet from the airport made us feel that we were taken went along for the ride, too.

Whether visiting Las Vegas for business or pleasure as a parent, it can be easy to forget the kids are back home with the grandparents or neighbors. Heck, even when they're in tow it can be hard to keep track of them here. Raise your hand if that means little Bobby has a Vegas Souvenir or two in the form of a tall Eiffel tower or plastic football.

At The New Children's Museum, Exhibits for Children And Adults To Enjoy

Making our first trip to the new Discovery Children's Museum in Downtown Vegas during Spring Break probably wasn't our finest decision. But, in retrospective, we're thankful for the 20 minutes lined up outside its facade for the moments of stillness it provided. As, once we paid our way and had our hands stamped with Oh Myyy as proof, it was non-stop go, go, go for close to two hours. Up and down, down and up three flights of stairs to three floors of kid paradise. With, what felt like, just about every child in Vegas. While trying and, we're not ashamed to admit, failing at times to keep track of a five year old so excited that he could barely play in one center before sprinting to another.

For kids, there really was no way this place could not impress. One more floor than the old museum space, lots of new exhibits to explore. Our pint-sized critic drawn immediately to The Summit, a spiraling, 70-foot, wire-enclosed tower that rises just steps off the lobby straight up to the ceiling. (A warning. You will lose your child here. We lost ours twice. He didn't care. Still doesn't.)

The Summit is an experience within itself with oversized steps and different platforms offering different learning opportunities as you climb higher and higher. If your child reaches the top (at this point, you'll likely just wave them on), they'll be able to peer out windows at the surrounding cityscape. That section was still under construction during our visit. Quite the disappoint to our tyke.

Springs Preserve A Nice, Quick Escape, Especially For Kids

Where: 333 S. Valley View Blvd. [map]

On the verge of yet another excursions binge (which we will tell you all about when were done), we figured we'd let you know about one of the more serene experiences we have had within the Vegas city limits. The Springs Preserve is only about 15 minutes from the center of The Strip, but offers a fun out-of-city experience.

The Springs Preserve is part museum, part activity center, part nature trails. There's plenty to do for all ages, but we found it really focused on the much younger crowd. If you have little ones tagging along this is a great spot to visit, there is a child specific area and it is almost guaranteed to wipe them out.

Not everyone wants to do it. And, not everyone thinks others should. But, if you head to Vegas with kids in tow, there's something new to try out that won't require that you step into a hotel that looks like it belongs in a sad Disneyland.

Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas now offers a children's afternoon tea for parents looking for a bit of sanity tasty way to introduce the littles to a bit of refinement.

Santa in Vegas: Comedy, Magic, Mojitos, and Junk Food

December 7, 2011 at 12:22 PM | by | Comments (0)

What do Santa outfits, magic, cookies, booze, and kids have in common? If you said a special holiday edition of To Catch a Predator, you'd be wrong. Those festive ingredients are all backdrops for two separate chances the kids can legally get with Santa.

The first holly, jolly event is a show called Santa's Magical Circus at the V Theater inside the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood. The show is described as combining comedy, magic, variety acts, dancers, and a whole lot of holiday cheer. In addition to featuring a showgirl, tuxedo-ed sunglass wearing dog, and an excited Santa handling white pixie-dust, the show's website promises to have you and your kids rolling in the aisles with laughter.

Kids. How do they always sniff out the porn stash?

Las Vegas will be at Defcon 19 next month, a threat level never before seen, when devious kids penetrate the city. Defcon 19 as in the world's largest and longest running underground hacker's conference. The (hacker) danger might be elevated, but not quite to nuclear threat level, as this year's events include Defcon Kids for the first time ever.

Defcon Kids will train the next generation of white hat (ethical) hackers, or at least that's the path conference organizers hope they take. Kids aged 8-16 will learn codebreaking techniques and communicating in code. As if teenagers didn't already have their own language when POS, P911, PAW, or CD9.

The Vegas Strip May Not Be For Kids, But Ravella Is

Where: 1610 Lake Las Vegas Parkway [map], 89011

The debate on whether kids have a place on the Vegas Strip is one that will likely never end, but anyone who has traveled to Sin City with the littles in tow knows there's no easy way to ditch them for some adult time. (And, no the pool and arcade don't count.)

But, if you're willing to give up The Strip, you can still get in a bit of Vegas while knowing the kids are alright. Ravella, the everything-old-is-new-again former Ritz Carlton in Lake Las Vegas, now offers a supervised Kid's Club and it's free to guests.

You’ve probably passed by it drunk late at night next to MGM Grand. You may have even stumbled in, or if you couldn’t find a babysitter, dropped the kids off for a few hours while you chatted up the Hot Girls To Your Room snappers.

Whether the dependents need an arcade fix in Vegas, the awkward kid in you wants still lusts after Ms. Pac Man, or you’ve just been looking for a reason to shake your joystick at the Sega-owned Gameworks, there’s a promotion going down now that might excite your bike.
