We like the Las Vegas Sun's comprehensive blog roundup of some Labor Day weekend festivities you might want to check out. Here are some highlights:

Labor Day Insanity: Downtown Is Still The Cheapest

August 25, 2009 at 2:07 PM | by Erika Pope | 0 Comments

It’s no surprise that rooms are still available for this Labor Day Weekend. But if you plan to make Las Vegas your end-of-summer, last-hurrah destination, you’d do well to book now as room rates are creeping up.

That’s true especially among the middle- and lower-tier properties around town. According to Expedia.com, you can still get a smokin’ deal at properties downtown (average room rate at the The Plaza for the weekend is $45 per night; the El Cortez is $51 per night and the Four Queens is $74 per night), but some of the less desirable places on the Strip have shot up past the $100-per-night mark. Circus Circus alone stands below that benchmark at a reasonable $96 per night for the three-day weekend, while places like Excalibur are going for $124, Imperial Palace for $127 and Sahara for $112.

Guitar handles at The Hard Rock.

Rates are creeping up for Labor Day Weekend in Vegas, but there are still deals to be had. Check your preferred hotel’s Web site for online promotions and such; many of their “summer specials” last through Labor Day weekend and beyond.

In the meantime, we rounded up a cross-section of the entertainment offerings in town that weekend – as always, they’re nothing if not diverse – for last-blowout-of-the-summer planning pleasure.

At the Hard Rock on September 4, Hell’s Belles are playing at Wasted Space ($15, 10 p.m. show) and Puddle of Mudd is rocking out poolside (tickets start at $29.55, 8 p.m. show). Santana is performing his semi-regular gig at The Joint on the 4-6 at 9 p.m. (tickets range from $51 to $151). Rates at the Hard Rock start at $219 on Friday night, $469 on Saturday and $449 on Sunday.

Downtown is Deal Central as Labor Day Weekend Nears

August 4, 2009 at 7:04 PM | by Erika Pope | 0 Comments

As we’re accustomed to seeing these days, rates are pretty much all over the map for the last big holiday weekend of the sultry summer season. The good news: there are plenty of rooms still available in Vegas over Labor Day Weekend. The great news: there is some serious value to be had that weekend, too. Here’s a glimpse of what’s currently available at :

The absolute lowest rates in the resort corridor seem to be those on offer at downtown’s Gold Spike. It ain’t glamorous, folks, but it claims a certain old-school Vegas appeal in the eyes of some people. Meanwhile, average rates there over Labor Day Weekend (which we’re identifying as the three nights from Friday, September 4, until Monday, September 7) are a practically laughably low $40 per night.
