Larry's Villa Keeps Happy Hour Simple with T&A and Cheap Beer

Where: 2401 W Bonanza Rd Ste A [map], 89106
February 12, 2010 at 8:15 PM | by globetrotting gourmet | 0 Comments

Coins once accepted by slot machines at Larry's Villa.

Sometimes it’s best to keep happy hour simple – tits, ass and a cheap beer. When multi-tasking locals want topless dancers and to tie one on, they head to North Las Vegas to Larry’s Villa.

Make no mistake about it; Larry’s is definitely a dive bar. Its slogan pretty much says it all, “Girls, gambling and booze since 1972”. But, Larry’s has improved its dumpy image with an upgrade in eye-candy, new plasma TVs, a bumpin’ sound system, new décor, new bathrooms and a fancy new draft beer system.

How Far Should You Go for a Capriotti's Sandwich?

January 15, 2010 at 6:51 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

Answer: Whatever the distance, it's worth it.

Over the summer we told you that Capriotti's sandwiches were the best in Vegas, hands down. Not long after that, it was confirmed that Capriotti's sandwiches were the best in the nation.

But as good as these sandwiches are--Capriotti's homecooks all their own meats and uses fresh veggies and freshly baked bread--they aren't all that accessible to folks who fly in for the weekend and shack up in a room on the Strip. Tasting a bite of Capriotti's while you're in town involves either walking quite a bit, riding on The Deuce or taking a cab.

So what's a Vegas visitor to do? Don't worry, we got you covered.

The closest Capriotti's to the Strip is at 322 West Sahara Avenue, right next to The Golden Steer. The sub shop sits in low-key strip mall and has been recently renovated. It's not quite no man's land but it does require some effort to get to. If you make a trip to the Bonanza Gift Store or the NASCAR rides at The Sahara or for some inexplicable reason are staying at the Riviera, it's only a one block walk to Capriotti's to get your fix.

Looking To The Future: The Constant Reinvention of Vegas

January 13, 2010 at 11:40 AM | by juliab | 1 Comment

We were having a gawp at the CityCenter skyline last night when we were reminded of what Loanne Miller Parker – widow of Elvis’ manager Colonel Parker, and longtime* Vegas resident – was saying about the city at the Elvis forum on Sunday.

Obviously she spoke a lot about Elvis, but it was what she had to say about Las Vegas itself that really caught our attention:

Vegas is a city where you’ll never see the same place twice – it’s always changing. It’s not a city that values what was; it’s always looking to what can be and what will be. It’s constantly reinventing itself more quickly than any other city in the world, and that’s why people come here to find themselves.

We can’t speak for you lot, but for us it felt like she put into words what we feel about Vegas – except we hadn’t really realized that we felt that before she said it. Clever lady!

*When we say longtime resident, we mean it – she’s been here since 1968.

Beware of the Cellar Lounge, Its Charms Could Keep You There Through the Night

Where: 3601 West Sahara Avenue [map], 89102
November 3, 2009 at 5:50 PM | by VegasMichaelT | 0 Comments

Serendipity--the feeling, not just the ice cream shop at Caesars-- can be a good thing, case in point - the Cellar Lounge. It’s the kind of basement bar just west of the Strip that you may have discovered while driving past it, curious of its interior, but may never had the time to step and take a look - and that’s where we come in. The bar's name states just what you’re going to get with this place - a cellar, an underground bar that gets to the business at hand, smart bartenders serving affordable cocktails in an atmosphere that we like to call...festive.

It’s a hideaway for sure, with a nice courtyard patio in the back of the building to grab some fresh air if things feel a touch crowded inside. The interior is sparse but still inviting and thankfully, they didn't go overboard with any sports memorabilia.

As for the mix of people here, there are tourists who took a 10 minute cab ride from the Strip, divorcees looking for a new lease on life, casino workers trying to unwind, or literature majors who just want to hang and observe.

What Do All These Media People Think About Vegas?

Where: 3355 Las Vegas Blvd. South [map], 89109
October 30, 2009 at 8:15 PM | by globetrotting gourmet | 0 Comments

Last Saturday, CBS Travel Editor and frequent The Early Show guest Peter Greenberg broadcast his radio show from the Venetian Resort. The line-up of guests was pretty spectacular and the topics jumped all over the travel map.

But it was Greenberg’s restaurant related interviews, locals’ commentaries, and caller’s questions that were of particular interest to our Vegas dining scene lovin’ selves. From Michelin-starred fine dining to hole-in-the-wall finds, Greenberg’s show ran the gamut.

Even 'Jesus' Hangs Out at The Spring Mountain Plaza Strip Mall

Where: Spring Mountain Road & Decatur Boulevard [map], 89102
October 14, 2009 at 11:14 AM | by VegasMichaelT | 0 Comments

In keeping up with our hip credibility, we continue to strive for those out of the way places that are not too ubiquitous, and that normally means some interesting mom and pops and a few offbeat minor chains. Now we do understand that with rising gas prices and our ever dwindling spare time, it’s hard to roll off the couch and head out to that one quirky store or restaurant. Instead, we will again recommend a keen, under the radar "Low-Fi" strip malls that just you’ll most likely find amusing.

Spring Mountain Plaza at Spring Mountain Road & Decatur Boulevard.

Just up a few blocks west from Chinatown and generally just a 15 minute drive west from the Strip is the Spring Mountain Plaza, a contagiously fun little strip mall that’s quite popular on a daily basis. It suffers from an unbelievable tight parking area, but those in the know will seek out Ronald’s Donuts (702.873.1032).

Locals Night Will Make You 'Blush'

Where: 3131 Las Vegas Blvd. [map], 89109
October 12, 2009 at 1:38 PM | by globetrotting gourmet | 0 Comments

We know that Blush is kinda considered the red-headed stepchild compared to Tryst at Wynn, but when we aren’t partying at full-tilt frenzy, we prefer its sexy lounge-like atmosphere over Tryst’s must-have-table mentality. We can’t go big every night, ya know?

There’s also something that appeals to our inner easily entertained kid with the pageantry of the sparkler parade and Rocky soundtrack every time someone orders a bottle of bubbly. Let’s raise a toast to a club that doesn’t take itself so damn seriously. Cheers.

Tuesday nights at Blush are all about the locals, who get in gratis with local ID. Local ladies get the bonus of full open bar from 11p.m. – midnight. Score one for the kitten squad. The dress code is slightly less glam on Tuesdays, the vibe kicked back, but the crowd as beautiful as always.

For An Attitude-Free Industry Night, Check out JET Tonight

October 5, 2009 at 7:05 PM | by globetrotting gourmet | 0 Comments

Hanging in Vegas on a Monday night and want to party like a local? Swing by JET Nightclub at The Mirage for its wildly popular Industry Night. We’ve always preferred Las Vegas better on non-weekend nights (less crowds, lower cover charges, less douchebaggery, easier to get ressies, etc.) and now we make a point of going to JET for Industry Night if we’re in town.

On Mondays, local hospitality workers get in free with the flash of a local ID (there’s never a cover for local women). Non-local guests can go online to buy a VIP Entry ticket for $40, which fast tracks them for immediate entry and includes cover charge.

Find an Alternate Reality at One of Sin City's Best Comic Book Stores

Where: 4800 South Maryland Parkway, Suite D [map], 89119
October 2, 2009 at 4:33 PM | by VegasMichaelT | 0 Comments

It may sound surprising but we often get asked by Vegas visitors where they can get a comic book fix during their stay. But in truth, it’s not thatsurprising, given the fanship of comic book devotees here in Las Vegas. So without further delay, we answer this question with a “Hell yeah we have a comic bookstore that is accessible to visitors!”--The Alternate Reality Comics.

Located in the University district and just a 10 minute cab ride from McCarran Airport, owner Ralph Mathieu has done a highly consistent job over the last 16 years to provide a well-stocked inventory for his customers: popular DC and Marvel titles, Manga, adult and underground comics are just some of the goodies available.

The customer service is terrific, if the store doesn’t have what you’re looking for, Ralph will do all that he can to help you track it down.

The Bunkhouse :: Our Favorite Place For a Dependable Ruckus

Where: 124 South 11th Street [map], 89101
September 17, 2009 at 3:13 PM | by VegasMichaelT | 0 Comments

The Bunkhouse, a cornerstone of Las Vegas’ bar scene since 1953, has the kind of throwback quality that you couldn't invent if you tried. We're talking about the kind of amusing obstinacy where the bar simply doesn't bother to update their interior despite what the rest of the world has done over the years - with pictures of old stills from Western movies, tarnished horns on the wall, simple, laminated menus and bartenders who greet you with the catchphrase “what’ll it be?” before you even reach the bar stool.

Birthday Celebrations in Vegas: Trade Booze for Bundt Cakes

Where: 8320 W. Sahara Ave #140 [map], 89117
September 17, 2009 at 12:29 PM | by Erika Pope | 0 Comments

In town for mom’s, dad’s, your honey’s or anyone else’s birthday? You can always dine at a fancy restaurant and order one of those architectural-looking desserts with “Happy Birthday” piped onto it in gold-leaf icing and pass around the spoons. OR, you can do what an impressive number of Las Vegans do when it comes time to blow out the candles and order delivery from Nothing Bundt Cakes.

This homegrown Las Vegas bakery started in 1997 and has grown into a franchise around the Southwest. They do one thing and pretty much one thing only: bundt cakes (duh) decorated with fat, gooey ribbons of cream cheese frosting. You can order 8-inch ($18.50, serves eight), 10-inch ($28.50, serves 18) or single-serving “bundtlet” varieties ($3.99 or 12 for $45).

It’s Free Hot Dogs and Then Some at the Decatur Liquor Store

Where: 546 South Decatur Blvd. [map], 89107
August 14, 2009 at 2:21 PM | by VegasMichaelT | 0 Comments

We do love the Decatur Tavern. In fact, if you’ve read a few of our reviews on VegasChatter, you know that we love most bars - okay all bars. Now take what we write with just a slight pinch of salt, because we’re not the sort that highlight drinking for the sake of drinking, but rather the people, atmosphere and the stories you might take home after you leave a good bar. In the case of the Decatur Tavern, you get all that plus free hot dogs on Friday!

The free hot dogs on Friday aside, the Decatur Tavern offers more than most with a fine bar stock, a nice assortment of barflies and cheerfully underwhelming decor. As you have probably guessed, it’s old. They have been around since 1963, thus making it a neighborhood bar.
