Studio 54 Helps You Get Your Freak On
It was only yesterday that we were wondering what had become of the cast of Freaks since O’Sheas closed their awesome show. We were hoping they wouldn’t be sat at home twiddling their thumbs out of their sockets, and we’re pleased to report that although there’s some socket twiddling going on, it’s not at home.
No, it’s at Studio 54, as part of DJ Skribble’s new Saturday night, Freak Show. It debuted this weekend, and we were highly excited to see our fave members of the Freaks cast, the lovely Kelvikta the Blade and Andrew S. Kelvikta was sword swallowing. We’re not sure what Andrew did, but we’re particular fans of his human kebab look, so we’re going to say that’s what he did.
Every week the acts are going to be a little different, but we’re told that in future appearances there’ll be lying on a bed of nails, fire eating, dancing on broken glass, sticking stuff in faces, and “deep body skewering”. Bring out the meat hooks! Much better than acrobats, anyway.
Freak Show runs till July, and the freaky acts make four appearances between 1-3am.

The Academy Awards (The Ones With Big Hair) Are In Vegas Next Month
Oscars, Schmoscars. There’s a different kind of Academy Awards coming up next month, it’s all going down in Vegas, and it should be at least as glitzy as the Oscars, thanks to the sequinned dresses we’re sure the attendees are going to be sporting.
Yes, the 45th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards are coming to the MGM Grand on April 18. “Music, film and television legend” Reba McEntire will be hosting.

No More High-Flying Folk Inside Studio 54?

Hoping to hit on some acrobats while you guzzle down your vodka redbulls? Sadly, there's one less place to do that in Vegas.
The other week magician Anthony Cools tweeted that the entertainment at the Studio 54 nightclub at MGM Grand would no longer be doing aerial stuff. He lamented:
Studio 54 not doing anymore airial [sic] stuff, only thing that set them apart from the newer hotter clubs... out with the old, in with the new...
We agree. Studio 54 is a little bit tired these days. We wouldn't go so far as to say that aerial acts would give the club a competitive edge but it does need some life. Just being the reincarnation of the New York Club isn't going to cut it anymore.
What do you think of Studio 54--Hot or Not? Let us know in comments below.

David Copperfield's Still Got It (Despite MGM Grand's Best Efforts)
Like: The Copperfield. Dislike: The Copperfield's environs.
We warned you we were going to do this. After David Copperfield hypnotized us with his silky voice and creepy invitations, we wanted to go see his show. This week, we finally got round to it and hit up the Hollywood Theater at MGM Grand.
We wanted to see the magic, of course, but what we really wanted to know is whether Copperfield’s still got it. Because, although watching him walking through the Great Wall of China is a heowge memory from our childhood, that was several years and several more grey hairs in the past.

Get Beer and Oysters on the Cheap at Seablue

Michael Mina may have expanded his Vegas empire with AMERICAN FISH, his new restaurant at Aria (which we sampled yesterday and could sum up in three words: oh. my. goodness) but he's still finding new ways to please at his other properties, like Seablue at MGM Grand.
Seablue has an incredibly affordable happy hour in the bar area from Sunday through Friday. Starting at 5:30pm and lasting through 7:30pm you can get $2 draft Stella Artois, $1 oysters and gulf shrimp from the raw bar, half price Lobster Corndogs ($7.50) and Salt And Pepper Calamari ($5).
It’s a fairly limited deal, but you want to gorge on beer and shellfish, it’s one of our favorite deals on the strip. Plus, who can resist the crusty, fried cornmealy goodness of Lobster Corndogs?

The Signature at MGM Grand Now Coddling The Brits
Wait a second. Isn’t the whole point of travel to experience something new, a different perspective, heck, even a different culture? While you may think Las Vegas is devoid of such things, it is a culturally diverse destination and we dare you to argue that there is any place on the planet like Las Vegas.
We make it a point to steer clear of safe, familiar, and predictable elements in our travels, which is why we give The Signature at MGM Grand’s new “Home Suite Home” promotion a big thumbs down. We love that British Airways is now offering non-stop service from London to Las Vegas, but seriously doubt that British travelers will be enticed to fly more than 5,000 miles by the promotional promise of PG tips tea and McVitie’s snacks upon arrival.

David Copperfield Hypnotized Us Into Wanting To Go To His Show
You may need to turn the sound up to hear the full extent of the creepiness. Sorry!
So there we were, cruisin’ quietly down the Strip last night when we got caught right in the middle of a magician sandwich. On our right hand side was a truck pulling this David Copperfield ad. On our left, no less than two trucks, one behind the other, each carrying an ad for Lance Burton.
Being inexplicably drawn in by those liquid brown eyes and, um, sparkling white t-shirt, their fight for our gaze was won by Copperfield. But then, a horrid thing happened. Copperfield started talking to us, asking us to come to his “brand new show” at the MGM Grand. Over and over and over again, until we felt a little bit hypnotized. Poor Lance Burton was completely forgotten. Both of him.

Love Me Two Times (Before the Holidays)

The Mandalay Bay
Hotel room rates in Vegas are hard to beat right now. If you can’t find a place to stay for under a Ben Franklin, we hate to say it, but you aren’t looking very hard. In the spirit of the season (or is it savings?), many Vegas hotels are putting themselves on a pre-holiday sale, dropping prices even lower in an attempt to lure end-of-the-year visitors.
We’re especially giddy that two of our favorite Strip properties have joined the ranks of the under $100 club – MGM Grand and Mandalay Bay. Here’s a quick peek of deals and the money-saving perks once you get there:
MGM Grand is offering rock-bottom room rates as low as $75 per night with its “Maximum Vegas” deals. The happy hour deal at SeaBlue is also pretty unbelievable – especially by Michael Mina’s usually spendy standards. From 5:30 to 7 p.m. guests can enjoy half price lobster corndogs and calamari, $1 oysters and gulf prawns and $2 draft beers.

The Ultimate Sin City Contest: Confess Your Sins for a Free Night at MGM

Folks come to Sin City to do exactly just that--get their sinning on, whether it be too much gambling, too much drinking, too much shopping, too much eating or even too much sexing it up. And usually everyone leaves Vegas with the infamous catchphrase ringing in their minds, "What happens here, stays here."
But MGM Grand is wondering why does sinning have to be so bad? The hotel casino has kicked off a new Twitter contest called MGM Grand Sin where Twitterers "confess" their sins and each month at random, the hotel will select a winner to receive a free room night. All folks have to do is follow @mgmgrand and tweet their sin, followed by #mgmsin.
We checked out the hashtag to see what other folks are confessing. Most of the "sins" so far seem to be mild--late-night online shopping, addiction to Cirque shows, not calling your sister all weekend, etc. We really don't think these are deserving of a free night's stay though. However, MGM is keeping tabs of "Unforgivable" sins and the one that made us laugh out loud was this: "I peed in the MGM Fountain." Did you get arrested?
Our sin? It's that we love this Twitter contest. It's our favorite one yet. It's easy, you could win a free room and hey, you get something off your chest.

Best Sportsbooks to Watch The World Series

Okay, okay – the matchup for this year’s World Series isn’t set in stone just yet (Go Yankees!), but you don’t need to know who’s playing to know which Vegas sportsbooks to support.
Betting on baseball is easy—unlike basketball and football, the two basic wagers are moneyline bets (which wager on the outright winner) and over/under wagers on the total number of runs scored. Sure, there are proposition bets (dubbed “props”) at some casinos, but those are generally crapshoots anyway.
Watching baseball, however, now that’s another issue. Because the ball is so small, because the camera angles are so wide, it’s important to pick a sports book with big, unobstructed televisions to maximize viewing pleasure.
(Of course you also want books that mute the sound, because Fox's announcers, Tim McCarver and Joe Buck, can be insufferable.)

Skylofts at MGM Now Slightly More Affordable

The Skylofts at MGM Grand are one of the sweetest suites on the Strip. They are comparable with the Wynn Tower Suites and with the new suites atop Hotel32 at The Monte Carlo. But staying in one of these suites usually means emptying your bank account or being a sycophant of extreme douchebag proportions to someone you hardly like but has a ton of money. Make sense?
But DealBase.com just alerted us to this awesome deal that not only gets you the suites for less but throws in some perks as well.
Now don't get too excited. This is still an expensive hotel room and you got to be there on the right dates. The new deal will get you that room as low as $600 a night for a 1-bedroom suite when it's previously gone for well over $1,000. You will also get a $50 in-Loft dining credit daily, daily free gym access and $100 spa credit per stay.
