February 25, 2010 at 3:04 AM | by juliab | 0 Comments

As you might have noticed had you been following our Twitter feed last weekend, we have a new group in danger of overtaking Matt Goss in our musical affections at the moment. Who could possibly remove the halo from the Gossmeister, you might well ask?

Let us introduce you to Gino Juarez, Aurelio Audy and Tito Martinez, otherwise know as the rock ‘n’ roll mariachis at Hussong’s Cantina in the Shoppes At Mandalay Place.

Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba To Close on February 15

Where: 3200 Las Vegas Blvd. S. [map], 89109
February 4, 2010 at 5:00 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

Another day in Vegas, another restaurant closing. But unlike other cities, there's always a new restaurant waiting in the wings in Sin City. That's what's happening with the beloved Cafe Ba Ba Reeba, a tapas restaurant which sits facing the Strip from the Fashion Show Mall.

The Stew blog reports that the restaurant and its $3 happy hour will close down on February 15 to make way for a new "informal cantina and taqueria" from its parent company, Lettuce. The traditional menu will feature your fave mexican standbys as well as housemade sangria and a walk-up taco stand that lets you order to go.

The new still unnamed Mexican restaurant will open sometime in March. So next week, you better get your feel of Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba while you can.

Ready For Unusually Strong Margaritas? Hussong's Cantina Opens Today

Where: 3950 Las Vegas Blvd South [map], 89119
January 15, 2010 at 11:45 AM | by juliab | 0 Comments

We’re about to declare this officially open

Ole! Hussong’s Cantina opens today in The Shoppes at Mandalay Place. We found it at the weekend lurking next door to the Burger Bar and opposite Lush. And when we peered through those curtains (because they’re kind of teasing us, seeing as they’re not entirely covering the place), this is what we saw:

We’re liking the posters on the walls, and we’re loving the pillar box red they’ve used. And those tables look pretty well spaced out as well.

Don’t forget, either, that this is the place which promised “the best party every night”. We’d like to say we’ll be judging it harshly, but if their margaritas really are “unusually strong” then we’re pretty much sold already.

What's Under The Table at Diablo's Cantina?

December 22, 2009 at 5:43 PM | by juliana | 3 Comments

Why it's a half-empty giant bottle of Ocean Spray cranberry juice. We found this interesting "souvenir" dining at Diablo's Cantina at The Monte Carlo the other week. The Mexican food was good and the drinks got us drunk but we still prefer Dos Caminos at the Palazzo for Mexican food on the Strip. We're suckers for their guacamole, their classic margaritas and the fish tacos.

What's your favorite place for Mexican food on The Strip? Let us know here.

Unusually Strong Margaritas Will Get the Party Started at Hussong's in January

Where: 3950 Las Vegas Blvd South [map], 89119
December 8, 2009 at 7:29 PM | by juliab | 3 Comments

Back off CityCenter! Double back off Eva Longoria Parker! You’re not the only new people in town. And soon, you’re not going to have the newest south-of-the-border restaurant, either. Because Mandalay Bay is getting a new Mexican eatery in January.

That’s right. Hussong’s Cantina from Ensenada, Baja California – the “well-known rite of passage for southern Californians”, as it styles itself - is opening up another branch in The Shoppes at Mandalay Place first thing next year.

And they’re not mincing their words, either. “Our plan is to serve great food and throw the best party every night,” says Scott Frost from developers Titan Nightlife group. The best party? In Vegas? Every night? Good luck with that.

Every Wednesday is Cinco de Mayo at Tacos and Tequila

Where: 3900 S. Las Vegas Blvd. [map], 89119
September 23, 2009 at 5:07 PM | by globetrotting gourmet | 0 Comments

We have no problem pretending it’s Cinco de Mayo every Wednesday night. Heck, if the world was fueled with weekly doses of tequila and deep-fried tortillas, it would probably be a better place. Just saying.

So, we’re more than happy to play along with Mischeive Wednesdays at Tacos and Tequila in the Luxor.

Every Wednesday night from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. resident DJ Ernan will be spinning an eclectic mix of rock-n-roll, Latin and house beats, while bar-hoppers suck down drink specials like $5 house margaritas, $5 Hornitos shots and $5 Tecaté.

Please Don't Ever Change, El Sombrero Cafe

Where: 807 South Main Street [map], 89101
September 18, 2009 at 6:32 PM | by VegasMichaelT | 0 Comments

What exactly is the appeal of the El Sombrero Cafe? It's a question that comes up when people drive past this little, unassuming Mexican restaurant and discover that it is Sin City’s oldest - we repeat - oldest eatery.

Located in downtown art’s district, the El Sombrero Cafe started serving some chips and salsa to residents in the valley way back in 1950 in the same spot where it stands, off Main Street north of Charleston.

And we at Vegaschatter will recommend it over any overpriced, hyped-up Mexican restaurant in town.

Gardunos in The Palms Offers A Tasty Way To Eat Light

Where: 4321 West Flamingo [map], 89103
June 18, 2009 at 5:15 PM | by jaymi | 0 Comments

Las Vegas is not exactly known as the Diet Capital of the World. Whether you’re trying to stay on a budget (we don’t know about you, but Burger Bar in Mandalay Bay ALWAYS calls our name late night, and, thankfully, it’s open till 2 a.m. on weekends), or are enjoying some of the city’s more upscale culinary joys (between the gargantuan slabs o’ beef at Strip House, just about everything at TAO, and the banana cream pie at Emeril Lagasse’s Delmonico—the single-best-tasting thing in all of Vegas, in our opinion), it’s a chore to stay on a health plan.

Which is why when we find something yummy that also allows us to walk away satisfied without feeling like we have to go run a marathon to work it off, we like to share.

Having recently been strong-armed into eating at Gardunos in The Palms (and by strong-armed we mean we were trying to stay away from the high-fat fiesta that is a Mexican restaurant menu, but obliged anyway—we’re such good friends!!), we are already planning a return visit. The reason: a little thing called the Shrimp, Avocado and Cilantro Cocktail.

Get The Famous Guac at Dos Caminos for Less During Happy Hour (And Other Dishes Too)

Where: 3255 Las Vegas Blvd S. [map], 89109
June 17, 2009 at 2:15 PM | by Stephanie Sims | 0 Comments

If you've ever hit up Dos Caminos in New York, then you know all about its famous and fresh made to order guacamole, its tasty ceviches and its creative margaritas. (We're partial to the blueberry pomegranate margarita ourselves.) Fortunately for Vegas visitors and West Coasters, you don't have to splurge on a trip to NYC to eat here. You just need to hit up The Palazzo where a Dos Caminos restaurant is located just off the casino floor.

But like most well-known and well-received restaurants with amazing chefs, it can be a little on the pricey side. Shrimp ceviche, a tiny serving of shrimp, cucumber, avocado and jicama in a spicy tomato-citrus marinade is 12 bucks, and carne asada tacos are $15. They're delicious, but jeez, cut customers some slack.

That's why you need to hit it up during the new Dos Caminos happy hour.

Where to Celebrate Cinco De Mayo on The Strip

May 5, 2009 at 3:03 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

Taqueria Canonita at the Venetian

Feliz Cinco de Mayo! There's no way any sort of drinking holiday would go uncelebrated on the Strip and today, Vegas is celebrating Cinco de Mayo hard-core.

But before we send you off on a sure to be memorable drinking adventure, we'd like to remind you that Cinco de Mayo is not just about tequila, tacos and Coronas. Here's a little history lesson:

The holiday commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely defeat of French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín.

And with that,, you may now proceed with your regularly scheduled drinking programming. Here are our favorite five spots for Cinco de Mayo. Hint: have a lot of $5 bills handy.
