Locals Only Beer Fest Coming To Neonopolis This Weekend

May 20, 2015 at 2:58 PM | by | ()

There are moments where by the time certain trends reach Las Vegas, they’re already on their way out of being trendy. That’s not the case with craft beer, which has moved beyond just being a trend as craft beer sales continue to grow nationwide as do the amount of brewing companies.

Put it this way--five years ago, you had to search up, down and all around Las Vegas to find a craft beer. Today you can find craft beer on just about every menu all around Las Vegas.

Further, there is a rapidly growing local craft brew scene in Las Vegas. And they will finally get their day at the Locals Only Beer Fest at Neonopolis in Downtown Vegas on Saturday, May 23.

The Fest takes place from 2p.m. and 6p.m. and will feature Nevada Craft Brewers Association members Banger Brewing (hosts of the event), Barley’s, Hop Nuts, 777, Joseph James, CraftHaus, Bad Beat, Tenaya Creek, Big Dog’s, Chicago Brewery, Ellis Island, Old School, Gordon Biersch and Sin City. There will also be a couple home brewers featured at the beer fest.

A VegasChatter Reader Toasts Banger Brewing's Behind-The-Scenes Tour

Where: 450 Fremont Street, Suite 135 [map], 89101
October 23, 2014 at 3:19 PM | by | ()

VegasChatter reader @youstayclassyvegas staying classy at downtown's Banger Brewing.

Downtown Vegas tends to put it all out there. Want a free show? Look up at the five-football-fields long Fremont Street Experience canopy. Want to zipline? Just head to the 12-story-tall slot machine.

That's not to say, however, that there are no hidden gems to uncover. VegasChatter member @youstayclassyvegas stopped by downtown's Neonopolis recently to experience a not-so-widely known, behind-the-scenes tour of Banger Brewing. Here's his experience, in his own words:

Banger Brewing Now Serving Great Craft Beer On Fremont

Where: 450 Fremont Street, Suite 135 [map], 89101
January 7, 2014 at 8:18 PM | by | ()

Las Vegas’ newest brewery opened quietly last week in a small space inside Neonopolis on Fremont Street. Founded by a group of friends that worked together at Bellagio, Banger Brewing has a uniquely Vegas backstory. The owners have been working hard to build their brand over the last several years, brewing small batches and participating in regional beer festivals. With the opening of a brick-and-mortar location, Banger Brewing can finally get down to business.

New breweries frequently disappoint and, in an era where homebrewing has because extremely popular, every guy brewing beer in a bucket in his kitchen thinks he has what it takes to go to the next level. This writer walked into Banger Brewing with a critical mind and expected to experience thin, watery beer that had been rushed for opening day. Thankfully, that wasn't the case.

Waiting For Slotzilla's Opening? Wait For It...

January 7, 2014 at 2:07 PM | by | ()

The monstrosityer zipline downtown was all bright and shiny in December after a Craigslist hiring call, but an opening date was mysteriously missing. One month later, we can confidently say.... nothing has changed. Just the continuance of another Vegas delay originally slotted for a June 2013 opening.

VegasChatter correspondents spoke with a Fremont Street Experience maintenance worker who indicated a February opening was penciled on his calendar, possibly around Valentine's Day. We were unable to confirm if that calendar was Outlook, Google or Britney so file that rumor as you will.

While we continue to wait for an announcement of Slotzilla's debut, the Review-Journal reports rides are expected to cost about $20-30 depending on just how high you want to go. The RJ also has pics and video of test dummies zipping down the ride. No word if they were found via the Craigslist ad or not.

Cheers! Banger Brewing To Debut Next Week At Neonopolis

Where: 450 Fremont Street [map], 89101
December 19, 2013 at 10:59 PM | by | ()

You want one more year-end opening to get excited about? You got it! Neonopolis' long-awaited Banger Brewing will finally let the good times roll flow starting next week.

Banger Brewing is the boozy creation of a group of guys who met while working at Bellagio. Originally set to debut in March, the bar-slash-brewery came down with a severe case of Vegas delays. Our long wait, however, is almost over.

So, Slotzilla Will Be Open Soon, Maybe?

December 6, 2013 at 4:12 PM | by | ()

Will you be able to zip down Fremont Street on New Year's Eve? Beats us! But, maybe?

Slotzilla, the multi-story zipline experience that now towers over Neonopolis at the far end of the Fremont Street Experience, has a certain glow about these nights. What it doesn't have about it anywhere, though, is signage telling us when we can give it a try. So, how do we know it might debut soon? Well, while we haven't been able to find an opening date, we have discovered that Slotzilla did issue a hiring call on Craigslist about a month ago. And, was still looking for folks as of this week. The attraction was originally due to open in June.

Still Not Open Yet, Slotzilla Causing Late-Night Headaches On Fremont

Where: 89101
November 5, 2013 at 1:54 PM | by | ()

No one wants to say when Slotzilla will spit out its first zip liners after missing its targeted opening of June, but from the sounds of things, it could, maybe, be next month?

The Facebook page of the Fremont Street Experience warned fans yesterday that the installment of Slotzilla's cables (called the Zipline and the Zoomline, #funfacts) would cause "mall and road closures over the next 2 weeks," now through this Friday, November 8 and then repeated next Tuesday through Friday (November 12-15) as well.

The shutdowns will mean pedestrians won't be allowed on the mall between midnight and 8 a.m. Yes, you read that right. The Fremont Street Experience will morph into a late-night ghost town most of this week and next. Casino Center and 4th Street will also be closed to vehicle traffic.

You Should Be Able To Toss Some Back At Banger Brewing Soon

Where: 450 Fremont Street, Suite 135 [map], 89101
October 24, 2013 at 7:23 PM | by | ()

It's not like there aren't a bajillion places to drink in Downtown Vegas, but we've been looking forward to grabbing a seat at Banger Brewing for quite some time now, anyway.

The microbrewery-slash-bar, still a work in progress in Neonopolis, is the dream of a group of guys who met while working at Bellagio. A once hoped for debut of March, however, has been pushed back, and back. And, back. Just last month, the plan was to be open by, well, now, but that's since been delayed to mid to late November. (Probably, the last week of November, according to Facebook. So, yeah, maybe look to December, but we'll remain hopeful for November.)

In Downtown, A Curfew, Closures, And A Coming Soon Mystery

October 2, 2013 at 8:08 PM | by | ()

Downtown isn't all scaffolding and openings. It's mostly that, but the still-evolving section of Vegas is also seeing some growing pains, sudden closures, and is keeping a few mysteries of its own, too.

Today, city officials, in response to growing party crowds, have decided to enact a weekend curfew in downtown. As of this Friday, October 4, anyone under 18 without a parent or guardian or not on their way to or from work, could risk a $300 ticket if they're found within a specific area between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. That area is framed by Main Street, Ogden, Bridger and Maryland Parkway, as reported by the Las Vegas Sun which largely encompasses the Fremont Street Experience and Fremont East.

Most Unexpected Find of 2012

December 28, 2012 at 2:07 PM | by | ()

Downtown's Neonopolis is enjoying a resurgence on the coattails of its Fremont neighbors. After years of morphing into a teenage Vegas wasteland, the neighborhood has produced stores, restaurants, exhibits, and bars that are anything but a drag. However, when Denny's, complete with its own wedding chapel, was announced as the newest anchor tenant, popular opinion was that of one giant step backward toward downtown's roots of cheap eats, dirty dining, and cheese that only a mid-westerner could love.

Bets were made as to which VegasChatter writer would be drunk, desperate or both enough to land there first for an up close and personal. In other words, expectations were low, low, low, low. But, then a funny thing happened after a foodless night at Commonwealth. One starving writer entered, one impressed patron left.

Denny's on Fremont was a super clean, super friendly restaurant with a full bar, photo booth, gift shop and the same super cheap prices we're all familiar with. Yes, it was just a Denny's like every other Denny's yet nothing at all like any other Denny's. We became believers. Even the not-yet-built-but-rumored-to-still-be-on-the-way wedding chapel started to sound like a winning idea. Okay, we didn't go quite that far. But, Denny's on Fremont has inserted itself into our eating, drinking, and people watching rotation. Denny's on Fremont, a.k.a. the one with a bar, isn't gourmet, but is a solid downtown option open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Just like every other Denny's. Just expect it to be anything but.

Krave Headed To The Rio

December 26, 2012 at 1:35 PM | by | ()

Krave left the Strip for something massive in downtown Vegas and while the gay club will ring in the New Year in Neonopolis, the party will move closer to The Strip again for at least some of 2013.

Krave Massive will bring the party to downtown for the first time on New Year's Eve, but what's being billed as the world's largest gay club will only be ready to party for one night only. It will hold a NYE bash in its movie theater turned ballroom (and is still selling tickets if you're interested), but will head to the Rio in January "for a limited time" while construction continues.

Denny's Is Open Downtown And Ready To Surprise You

November 27, 2012 at 5:46 PM | by | ()

Oddly enough, downtown's newest bar doesn't serve food, but Fremont's newest restaurant (diner?) has a full bar. Go figure.

When Denny's announced it was painting Neonopolis yellow (and red) the collective response here at VegasChatter was one big meh. Then, word leaked that Denny's newest grand slam location would boast a wedding chapel and the reaction turned to Oh, dear God.

Well, after several delays and months later, Downtown Denny's... ahem... Denny's on Fremont... is now open for business. And, after a food-less night down the street at Commonwealth, this writer was just desperate hungry enough to check it out. And. It. Was. Awesome.
