Where Can You Find Bikini-Clad Women in Vegas on a Wednesday Morning?

Where: 5100 Las Vegas Blvd. South [map], 89109

Miss Universe 2009 swimsuit competition.

The answer this time is not in the champagne room at a gentlemen's club. Instead, bikini beauties can be found at The Fabulous Las Vegas Sign and the Fashion Show Mall. That's where the nearly naked ladies will be tomorrow morning at 8am to kick-off the Miss Universe pageant. All 83 of the Miss Universe pageant contestants along with Miss Universe 2009 Stefania Fernandez of Venezuela and Mayor Oscar B. Goodman will pose for a photo op with the sign. Lucky sign!

Later in the day from 3 to 4pm, 30 of the contestants will hand out glasses of cold lemonade in front of Fashion Show Mall. Yes, they will still be wearing bikinis then. And it will all be for a good cause as donations left at the Miss Universe lemonade stand will benefit the Nevada Cancer Institute.

Serendipity is One, Celebrates With Sweetness (And Holly Madison)

Where: 3570 Las Vegas Blvd South [map], 89109
April 7, 2010 at 12:17 PM | by juliab | 0 Comments

It was a special date yesterday, kids. The day Ahmadinejad derided Obama’s denuclearization efforts? No. The day the UK general election was announced, changing the political landscape for the next generation? Nah. The day Jim (Carrey) n Jen (McCarthy) split? Not even.

No, in Vegas yesterday was best known for being crowned Serendipity 3 Day – yes, officially, by Mayor Goodman via a proclamation and everything.

What had the café done to deserve this (apart from masterfully feeding us hangover omelettes and conveying sugar fixes whenever we’re in need)? Just turn one year old.

Yes, seriously. Mayor Goodman didn’t totally sell out turn up, but he sent a signed proclamation and the technically prettier Holly Madison in his place.

Obama's In Vegas, Made a Lightning Quick Arrival At McCarran

February 19, 2010 at 12:22 PM | by juliab | 1 Comment

So we spent most of yesterday afternoon hanging with the President. Well, kind of – we actually spent most of it cordoned into a little press pen on the runway at McCarran, watching the TV reporters apply their makeup (MAC, obvs), the Secret Service do their Reservoir Dogs impressions, and wondering whether our little card that said “White House Press Pool” would get us anything on eBay.

O arrived half an hour late, meaning it was too dark for our camera to get anything but blurry pics, and to make it harder for us, he took the steps of Air Force One at a run, possibly because he was running scared of Vegas after his latest comments, possibly because he was late for his $30k a head dinner at George Maloof’s house, or (less) possibly because he wanted to try a last minute make up session with Mayor Goodman, who’s still refusing to meet him unless he apologizes for dissing Vegas (and buys him a martini).

Where To See Obama Tomorrow (And Where To Avoid If You're Not Into Traffic Jams)

February 17, 2010 at 6:45 PM | by juliab | 0 Comments

Here’s a sight we may not be seeing this time

So President Obama’s long awaited trip to the Strip is finally taking place. He arrives at 6.15pm tomorrow, and leaves Friday lunchtime (no time to hang on for Bubba on Monday? Shame).

Where to see him? Well, if you’re flying in or out of McCarran tomorrow evening, there’s a good chance of catching a glance of Air Force One, or at least experiencing its aura as it (most likely) puts the kybosh on everyone else’s flights running on time.

Go Downtown Tomorrow to Count Down With the Mayor

Where: Fremont Street [map], 89101
December 30, 2009 at 2:51 PM | by juliab | 0 Comments

You know you’ve been spending too much time perusing the Strip’s offerings when $150 starts sounding like good value for New Year’s. Luckily, we just found ourselves looking at the Fremont Street website and we remembered that there are events that don’t require us to lay down all our earnings from the last month.

At Fremont Street, New Year’s tickets cost $20 out of state and $10 with Nevada ID. Which, compared to the celeb stuff, is nothing pig, as our granddad was fond of saying.

For your money, you’ll get 8 bands. And although they’re not quite of Black Eyed Peas caliber, they’ll be playing a good kind of music – they’re apparently “the world’s best tribue bands” and cover everything from Led Zep, Guns N’ Roses and Aerosmith to No Doubt, Depeche Mode, INXS and U2 (don’t let that put you off, it’s not actually Bono).

And the celeb host? None other than Oscar Goodman, who’ll be leading the countdown to midnight. Which means there may very possibly be showgirls. And poker chip business cards. That's us sold then.

Stalk the mayor and book your tickets by calling 702 687 5600 or 877 VEGAS 4 U.

Four Days Into the BA Flights, and They're Too Expensive For Us

October 29, 2009 at 1:51 PM | by juliab | 0 Comments

A whole week since the British Airways launch party for its London-Vegas flights, and four days since the flights themselves started. And what has happened?

Well, according to BA’s CEO Willie Walsh (that’s him checking in at Heathrow T5 with Mayor Goodman and his showgirls), London-Vegas is BA’s best-performing new route "by far", with the inaugural flight on Sunday full.

So far, so good. Unfortunately, the inaugural was also 90 minutes late, due to a brake fluid leak, meaning that they missed being greeted by Holly Madison, who had to go and perform in Peepshow.

The next day, Willie Walsh was given the keys to the city, Mayor Goodman threw a special lunch for British press at the Bellagio, and the Brits were let loose on the Strip to start tweeting about $12 diet cokes at the Wynn and the Grand Canyon making them feel "uncomfortable" (no, we have no idea what she means about that either, unless it's an undiagnosed fear of heights coming through).

The 'Happiest Mayor in the World' Has the Best Business Card in the World

October 26, 2009 at 1:26 PM | by juliab | 0 Comments

We already knew that Mayor Goodman sounded like a hoot from articles like this, and even if we hadn’t, we’d have guessed it from pictures from the BA London-Vegas launch party like this.

But we have newfound respect for after he gave us his business card at the party. What happened was that we lurched up to him excitedly and slurred our goodwill at him, he flashed us the indulgent smile of a man who can’t cross a casino floor without some drunk lurching up to him excitedly, and handed us his business card.

A Glimpse Into the Very Near Vegas Future: Brits On The Strip

Where: London, UK [map]
October 23, 2009 at 12:18 PM | by juliab | 0 Comments

Three signs of a good night: you wake up clutching a poker chip in one hand, Elvis Presley’s email address in the other, and your camera seems to have magicked up pictures of you with vodka luges and feather boas that you definitely don’t recall going anywhere near. This was our morning after the BA London-Vegas route launch party at Studio Valbonne in London last night.

Mayor Goodman was guest of honor along with his wife, Carolyn, his showgirls (six of them) and his Elvis impersonator. Two Cirque du Soleil folk were doing acrobatics around the room, Rain DJ Paul Oakenfold was on the decks, and everyone was in the party spirit – including the waitress who was so sozzled that she fell over as she was taking a picture of us with Elvis.

Mayor Goodman and His Girls Have Landed In London; Mel B Confirmed for the Party

Where: London, UK [map]
October 21, 2009 at 2:08 PM | by juliab | 0 Comments

The mayor has landed! Oscar Goodman and his showgirls arrived in London today in preparation for tomorrow’s party celebrating British Airways' direct London-Las Vegas flights which launch on Sunday. Good thing they put them in business class, what with those head-dresses.

And here’s Mayor Goodman looking pretty perky, considering he’s straight off a red-eye (we’re guessing from LA, unless they laid on a special Vegas flight for him. Which we wouldn’t completely disbelieve). The suits are (L-R) Rossi Ralenkotter, CEO of the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority, Mayor Goodman, and Richard Tams of British Airways. Loving that black cab – and hoping it was taking him to Buck House to meet the Queen

In still more happy news, those nice bods at BA listened to our plea to get Mel B along to the bash – she confirmed this afternoon. That’s what we call customer service. Now if they could only abolish their ridiculous seat-booking charges, we’d love ‘em to bits. Any chance of you hearing us on that one, chaps?

Full party report, complete with Mayor Goodman, Peter Andre and the lovely Mel B, to come on Friday.

Paul Oakenfold, Oscar Goodman and, um, Peter Andre Ready for London's BA Launch Party

Where: London, UK [map]
October 16, 2009 at 11:47 AM | by juliab | 0 Comments

Just nine days to go until the launch of direct British Airways from London to Vegas and we got some word about the party. It’s taking place at Studio Valbonne in the West End next Thursday, and Rain DJ Paul Oakenfold will be on the decks (the night’s doubling as a launch party for his new album Perfecto Las Vegas).

Guests of honour will be Mayor Goodman and his showgirls, Jen and Porsche, and our sources say they may well be joined by former England captain Matt Dawson, his teammates and tabloid staple Peter Andre. Not sure what any of that crowd have to do with Vegas (the rugby tournament maybe?), but until recently Peter was married to Jordan and his last business venture was MCing a male stripper show, so he should be just fine.

Las Vegas Adds More 7’s to The Strip With Rugby Tournament

October 15, 2009 at 5:19 PM | by BrightLightCity | 0 Comments

Las Vegas has always been famous for lucky number 7: slot machines, craps and the luckiest day to get married: 7/7/07. But now it’s getting a lot more sevens! At a press conference this morning, Mayor Oscar Goodman and several local dignitaries welcomed USA Sevens Rugby to Sin City with a ceremonious kick of a rugby ball over the iconic "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign.

For the past few years, the USA Sevens Rugby tournament was held in San Diego. But beginning in 2010 and several years after, the international event will move to Sam Boyd Stadium. The tourney draws thousands of fans each year from around the world. In fact, 20 percent of attendees are from outside the US. International teams competing in the 2010 tournament include Argentina (2009 champions), Australia, France, England, Kenya, Japan, Canada, Chile, Fiji, New Zealand, Samoa, Scotland, South Africa, Wales and more.

Several resorts have partnered to host the thousands of expected participants and fans, including: The Hard Rock (USA 7’s headquarter hotel), Palms (VIP hotel), Planet Hollywood (spectator hotel), Golden Nugget (downtown headquarters), Hooters (Las Vegas invitational headquarters) and Sam’s Town (spectator hotel and family headquarters).

Oscar Goodman Is Bringing His Showgirls To London To Christen BA's New Route

Where: London, UK [map]
October 2, 2009 at 3:17 PM | by juliab | 0 Comments

Have you heard of London's mayor Boris Johnson? He’s um, a buffoon character. Instead of neat politician hair, he has a woolly blond thatch, instead of saying bland politician things, he likes to weigh in with jokes that others sometimes take offence to, and instead of being a dull politician who nobody really cares about, Londoners either love him or hate him.

Boris likes to think he’s one of a kind, but he’s about to meet his match – Vegas mayor Oscar Goodman is crossing over the pond this month for the launch of British Airways’ direct London-Vegas flights on October 25.

Along with meeting Boris and, possibly, the Queen (he's working on that), he'll be guest of honour at an as yet top secret party.
