Vegas has a knack for showcasing the experience of chefs from around the world, each bringing their own unique background and skill set to the city. Among these is Chef de Cuisine of Public House, Thomas King.
The rule of thumb at Public House -- the one found within Venetian|Palazzo and not the one that's
surprisingly still at Luxor -- is "use more beer" and that is certainly the case with the restaurant's lovely fall dish, Southern Fried Quail ($21). Using a classic southern-fried, beer-battered chicken recipe that even the Colonel would covet, these dainty, semi-boneless birds are given a light brine, then flash-fried until nice and crispy, but with a very moist interior. The bird is then plated with roasted parsnips, Swiss chard, and chestnuts.
Las Vegas has a new obsession with the grape and we're not complaining a bit. Over the last few weeks, most of the restaurant news in town has either been centered around the Big Game (parties here), Valentine's Day (deets soon) or wine. And, not just wine, free or half-priced vino. Now, we're talking, right? Here's where you might want to raise your next glass:
Hyde Bellagio (Bellagio)
●Vino Thursdays beginning January 17
●Complimentary wine tastings held once month from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
●Small plates from Circo also will be available for purchase
●January event to feature Skeleton Malbec & Luc Belaire France Rose, among other labels
●February event to take place on Valentine's Day

Time for another My Vegas. It’s hard trying to keep tabs on all the happenin’ stuff in Sin City, so we’re calling in expert advice. Every time we bump into a Vegas celeb, we’ll grill them on where they rate and what they like to do (yes, handily, this can also double as a stalker’s guide to Vegas).
Readers may not yet relate the celeb featured in our latest installment of My Vegas as a Vegas celeb. For good reason since we grilled Kyle Lowder, who plays Stacee Jaxx in Rock of Ages, a show that just made it's debut at the Venetian a few short days ago. But we're told soap opera fans may recognize him from...wikipedia...wikipedia....Days of Our Lives or The Bold and the Beautiful.

The design is an, erm, interesting one, but one that seems to
poorly echo the poolside bar near Javier's Los Cabos locale at the Cabo Azul resort. Which is weird 'cause the same designer is behind both, but a casino does not a beachy backdrop make.

The 64-ounce tub of
moonshine beer can either be purchased empty for $8 (why?) or filled to the brim with your choice of beer. The price for that ranges from $22 to $52 dollars depending on which booze you choose. So, who's thirsty? If you do decide to try it out, don't forget to send us a pic!

Luxor's newest restaurant already has some big obstacles to overcome. The largest being that there's already another new(ish) restaurant here in Vegas with its exact same name. And, it's wildly popular.
Dubbed "Best New Beer Bar" and "Best Gastropub" among other honors, the Public House at Venetian has only been open since New Year's Eve but has quickly became a dining destination. Public House at Luxor has still yet to arrive, but is now promising a debut of September.
The other hurdles facing Luxor's Public House are Public House at Venetian (already solidly claims the 'Las Vegas' distinction), Public House at Venetian (does better on Google) and Public House at Venetian (won the better Twitter handle, too).
A few days ago, Public House Luxor began to talk up its menu offerings on social media and, so far, we've been... underwhelmed. Here are the two dishes mentioned so far:

We really thought that someone would back down here. Last year, both Venetian and Luxor announced that Public House was opening soon. Two separate restos by two completely different companies. And, while the Venetian's Public House has been serving up brews since late December, there's been silence from Luxor on their PH. Even when we asked a few months back. So, just when we thought that Luxor's Public House had fallen flat comes confirmation that plans are still fizzing along.
On May 15, a Public House Twitter account fired up and has been busily telling followers thanks and telling them to "like" them on Facebook all while proclaiming they're "opening soon":

To be honest, this makes us feel old. Please forgive our "get off my lawn" moment while we reflect on recent dining experiences on the Vegas Strip. This isn't meant as a rant, but more of a heads up and warning to prepare you for future trips.
Eating on The Strip is damn expensive!
In the past couple of weeks, we've eaten $20 burgers at both Public House and Central. We've paid $20 for fried rice at China Poblano and we've seen nachos at Carlos'n Charlie's between $15 and $20. Nachos! Seriously?!

Pairing St. Patrick's Day with Las Vegas already has the makings of an unforgettable holiday. If you can remember it. This year, St. P falls on a Saturday in the middle of March Madness. Aside from being face down outside a Dublin bar in a pool of what we hope is beer, we can't think of anywhere else we'd want to be this St. Patty's Day. On second thought -- March Madness opening weekend? Sorry, Dublin, you just fell to second place.
It's going to be hard not to stumble into a bit of the wearing o' the green and a bunch of drinkin o' the booze anywhere on the Strip. But, if you're a planner, there's plenty o' food and drink specials to pencil into your green itinerary. Just don't blame us if your tongue isn't the only green appendage
Sunday Monday morning.

Canadian customers have stumbled upon, and started to gravitate to, their offering of poutine. A Quebec dish of french fries, cheese curds and gravy, it's one of those things that if you have a craving, only the real thing will do. And, it needs to be cheese curds. (Otherwise, you've got disco fries. Right, club kids?) Public House adds duck confit to the mix and it's great. For the hardcore, you'll have to decide if this hits the mark, but for now it's the only place on The Strip where you'll find it. (Aria took their version off their menu last year.)

Vegas is a booze kind of town. Wherever you go, whatever time of day, there is a good chance that some sort of alcohol is flowing. Being the good Denver native that this writer in particular happens to be, we love a good beer. In Vegas, though, our expectations are usually quite tempered as most places only serve the standard options. But, while you may only be able to get (at the high end) a Corona or Newcastle while gambling, these is an ever-growing list of places to find craft beer in Las Vegas.
The Pub at Monte Carlo - The Pub at Monte Carlo is featured inside the walkway of shops that takes you from Monte Carlo to Aria. With a beer menu that is not short on options (they boast of having more than 300), you certainly should be able to find a beer for any palette here.

Eventually, there will be two Public Houses at each end of The Strip, but it looks like there will be a full year before Vegas tourists and cab drivers will be seriously confused.
A search of the Internets found the Public House at Luxor is anticipating an opening of Winter 2012. That Public House is part of a chain best known to folks on the east coast, with locations in Philly, New York and Maryland.
