Downtown Vegas: The Impact Of One On The Many

April 2, 2014 at 12:45 PM | by | Comments (15)

Downtown Vegas has seen a lot changes over the past few years, most of which has been documented right here on VegasChatter. Some would argue all that's new have been improvements, others would call it a mixed bag, while a few might even say it didn't need to be touched. From the injection of the Zappos culture into downtown to the buildout of Fremont East, changes have been many. There's also been the transformation of Fitzgeralds into the D. The Las Vegas Club's strategy of holding steady against a Binion's that slowly tries to re-invent itself while staying true to its roots. And of course, Downtown Grand's attempt to set itself apart from the rest of the old regime. And, that's just to name just a few.

Just under three years ago, excitement was building for the re-emergence of another classic downtown property, the Plaza. Since opening to a tepid response, the remodeled Plaza has seen its share of big changes right under its own roof. Mostly in its entertainment lineup, but also the introduction of a resort fee. And, what once looked like a survivor, Exposed Salon is (breaking news)... now gone.

Not all has disappeared or been replaced at the Plaza. Oscar's is still alive and well, though the restaurant within a resturant that was Simpatico went to culinary heaven long ago. Hash House A Go Go, still there. Poker, too, although in a different form. The announcement of a professional hockey team making its way to the Plaza means the pool deck will soon have a different look, and feel.. brrrr.

Two Coming Soon Ziplines Still Coming Soon

March 10, 2014 at 7:55 PM | by | Comments (3)

One was supposed to open downtown in June 2013. The other, just off The Strip, in August 2013. Months later, we're still waiting on both. And, the party line remains "soon."

In Downtown Vegas, the new rumor on Fremont about Slotzilla looks as if it may come true. In February, we shared whispers that an opening wouldn't happen until at least April. Today, the Fremont Street Experience Facebook page showed fans the view from Slotzilla's highest zipline level (the one folks will ride "Superman"-style) while keeping a specific launch date on the down low.

The New Rumor On Fremont About Slotzilla

February 12, 2014 at 8:38 PM | by | Comments (9)

If you've been waiting.. and waiting.. and waiting.. and waiting.. and, well you get the picture.. for Slotzilla, you should probably back out of this story now. The latest rumor on Fremont Street won't make you happy.

Where once we heard this weekend could.. possibly.. see the return of zipliners to downtown, we now have a new rumbling to report. Rumors that Slotzilla won't open until at least April now. This is by no means official. Slotzilla stopped giving an opening timeline long ago. It's also been silent on Twitter of late. Its last tweet was sent on January 29.

Waiting For Slotzilla's Opening? Wait For It...

January 7, 2014 at 2:07 PM | by | Comment (1)

The monstrosityer zipline downtown was all bright and shiny in December after a Craigslist hiring call, but an opening date was mysteriously missing. One month later, we can confidently say.... nothing has changed. Just the continuance of another Vegas delay originally slotted for a June 2013 opening.

VegasChatter correspondents spoke with a Fremont Street Experience maintenance worker who indicated a February opening was penciled on his calendar, possibly around Valentine's Day. We were unable to confirm if that calendar was Outlook, Google or Britney so file that rumor as you will.

While we continue to wait for an announcement of Slotzilla's debut, the Review-Journal reports rides are expected to cost about $20-30 depending on just how high you want to go. The RJ also has pics and video of test dummies zipping down the ride. No word if they were found via the Craigslist ad or not.

So, Slotzilla Will Be Open Soon, Maybe?

December 6, 2013 at 4:12 PM | by | Comments (8)

Will you be able to zip down Fremont Street on New Year's Eve? Beats us! But, maybe?

Slotzilla, the multi-story zipline experience that now towers over Neonopolis at the far end of the Fremont Street Experience, has a certain glow about these nights. What it doesn't have about it anywhere, though, is signage telling us when we can give it a try. So, how do we know it might debut soon? Well, while we haven't been able to find an opening date, we have discovered that Slotzilla did issue a hiring call on Craigslist about a month ago. And, was still looking for folks as of this week. The attraction was originally due to open in June.

Still Not Open Yet, Slotzilla Causing Late-Night Headaches On Fremont

Where: 89101
November 5, 2013 at 1:54 PM | by | Comments (9)

No one wants to say when Slotzilla will spit out its first zip liners after missing its targeted opening of June, but from the sounds of things, it could, maybe, be next month?

The Facebook page of the Fremont Street Experience warned fans yesterday that the installment of Slotzilla's cables (called the Zipline and the Zoomline, #funfacts) would cause "mall and road closures over the next 2 weeks," now through this Friday, November 8 and then repeated next Tuesday through Friday (November 12-15) as well.

The shutdowns will mean pedestrians won't be allowed on the mall between midnight and 8 a.m. Yes, you read that right. The Fremont Street Experience will morph into a late-night ghost town most of this week and next. Casino Center and 4th Street will also be closed to vehicle traffic.

Look At Slotzilla Now

October 7, 2013 at 9:57 PM | by | Comments (2)

Is it wrong that we wish Slotzilla was a working slot machine? While we won't ever get to spin the wheels, we will get to go for a spin before the year's out.

Vital Vegas captured the image above of a nearly complete thrill ride over the weekend. And, where once things moved at a snail's pace, check out what a difference a day makes as documented by VegasChatter fan Danial Mente who captured this snapshot early this evening:

Updating Downtown In Eleven Snapshots

September 27, 2013 at 10:55 PM | by | Comments (8)

It's been ten days since our last Downtown Vegas construction roundup and we agree. It's been way too long. We trod from the Plaza to the Western and back again earlier this week. Here's your latest updates on where all those endless construction projects stand now:

Downtown Grand
Yes, Downtown Grand has quite a glow around it. As well as a old-timey casino sign (shown above) and striped canopies (below).

Checking Up On Fremont's Construction Projects

September 17, 2013 at 5:57 PM | by | Comments (5)

As you know, Golden Nugget isn't the only downtown property with hard hat-clad workers walking around. We snooped around this past weekend to see what else is new as Fremont Street competes with the Strip in the 'most on-going construction' category. Not one to disappoint, we found some more progress to share.

At the Plaza's future Beer Garden, exterior walls have been cut through to open the space up to the exterior and posts have been installed for the fencing or gating that will line the street.

A Downtown Roundup, After Hours (Mostly)

August 23, 2013 at 8:45 PM | by | Comments (9)

If you think you're completely up on everything happening in Downtown Vegas, you might want to reconsider. Heck, even we thought we were finally caught up again after a late-night stroll earlier this week only to receive new information and images today.

Tuesday evening found us wandering around downtown, and tossing back a few drinks at the Fremont. To keep hydrated, naturally! Our priority aside from socializing, however, was to check on two new construction walls at the Golden Nugget first reported by Vital Vegas. But, we also wanted to follow-up on some on-going projects, too. And, along the way, we found more developments on top of that. Fremont, and its surrounding areas. An ever-changing experience.

First, several new things to report at the Plaza, including what's captured in the photo up top. New construction outside the hotel's food court, just off valet. Workers tell us it will be a beer garden, with faux grass and even concerts on the weekend. (How that will work with the Fremont Street stage just across the street is not yet known..) Inside, folks will be able to order up food and said beer. The construction wall for that can be seen in the panoramic below. Look for the garden to debut in late September.

Eight Snapshot Updates From The Strip To Downtown

August 1, 2013 at 10:52 PM | by | Comments (7)

We joke that VegasChatter has become more like Vegas(Scaffolding)Chatter, but it's one of those yuks where you sort of grimace and shake your head as you say it. So, it's probably no surprise that seven of these eight updates involve, you guessed it, construction. Here's the latest news you can use (or not) from Las Vegas Boulevard to Fremont Street. The plus side is, no hard hat is required!

1. Work It Out For Free

We've been so focused on the tasty bites, yummy drinks and comfy outdoor patio of Four Seasons' new lobby bar, PRESS -- and with good reason, we might add -- that we failed to notice the sweet workstation set-up inside.
