The Summer of ’69 is still going strong in downtown Las Vegas on Fremont Street. What might have appeared as a strange marketing gimmick is seriously turning into a tourist spot of some serious fun, high spirits and invention.
Aside from some of the great, old-school music acts that have been playing on Fremont Street all summer--bands like Three Dog Night and The Guess Who (groups that have ignited a new, younger fan base based on the feedback we’ve been getting)--there are currently some wicked promos.
Take for instance, what’s happening at the Plaza Hotel & Casinos and at the Vegas Club. Twenty lucky people, that’s right 20, will have a chance to win and drive off in that iconic little creation known as the VW Bug (no jokes about Herbie The Love Bug please).
The Summer of ’69 festival, currently underway in downtown Las Vegas, offers a--shall we say, diverse?--array of niceties for the tourist. Whether you're into music, food, light shows or general hippie nostalgia, here’s one attraction to take note of - a balloon exhibit at the Vegas Club.
Located toward the back of the casino, the Vegas Club isn’t one of the major properties in the bustling and ever developing downtown area, but you gotta give them credit for getting into the spirit of this Summer themed party with gusto. There is a surprising amount of verve and style to it all. Some examples? The counter girl at a promotions kiosk has donned love beads while the pit boss is wearing a psychedelic t-shirt (Seriously. For Real.),
Downtown Las Vegas will always have its share of bargains. Chief among them is a consistent stream of music acts that have played for free over the years, like Bow Wow Wow, The English Beat and most recently, some PYTs from the country scene.
This summer will see Fremont Street reach back in time even further as they celebrate the Summer of ’69 with a steady and supple line-up of many acts that were around during the thick of Woodstock.
Lovingly celebrating the 40th anniversary of the famous concert, Fremont Street will kick things off on Memorial Day weekend with the likes of the Guess Who (American Woman, These Eyes) and Blood, Sweat & Tears (Spinning Wheel, You‘ve Made Me So Happy) and continues all through the summer until Labor Day with the a continued strong line-up with Rare Earth, Jefferson Starship, The 5th Dimension, Canned Heat and Three Dog Night.
