This is what happens when we brainstorm story ideas before eating. For those about to eat, we're sorry. For everyone else that can't wait to eat, we salute you with an all almost (actually not even close if you can believe it) encompassing upcoming Las Vegas foodie event wrap-up.
LAS VEGAS' FIRST FOODIE FEST
Silverton Casino Hotel
Saturday, April 28 (noon to 11 p.m.) and Sunday, April 29 (noon to 9 p.m.)
Family friendly food and fun with over 30 gourmet food trucks, 15 food vendor booths, a farmer’s market, eating contests, beer garden, carnival rides and games, live chef demos, a tequila party tent, live bands, DJs, and after parties. Trucks you may know include White Rabbit Truck, Fuku Burger, Vizzi Truck, Devilicious and Mangia Mangia. Tickets are $7 in advance or $10 at the event. To buy said tickets or more info, visit Las Vegas Foodie Fest.
We’re still fascinated by last night’s ”60 Minutes” story about the hotbed of drone aircraft activity going on in Afghanistan being controlled by Vegas’ nearby Creech Air Force Base. The legendary Area 51 and its repository of top-secret, possibly alien-related military projects may have moved elsewhere, but we think the whole remote-controlled war machine thing is relatively sci-fi (and thereby: awesome) too.
In honor of the 60 Minutes piece, it's only appropriate to be reminded of the special currently on offer at the patriotic El Cortez, downtown’s recently renovated, nouveau-hipster hangout near the Fremont East Entertainment District. It’s offering all active duty military members who present ID $15 vouchers to The Flame Steakhouse for the rest of the month.
In keeping with its reputation as one of Vegas more economical places to hang, The Flame offers several appetizers (fried calamari, shrimp cocktail, oysters on the half shell, etc.) in the $10 price range, and its entrees range from $17.95 for “fried walleyed pike” to $46.95 for surf and turf (lobster tail and filet mignon). There are plenty of offerings – steaks, chicken, seafood – in the $20-$30 price range, too, along with soups and salads ($4.25 to $6.95). It pays to serve your country in this town.
