It’s not often this writer swoons over an appetizer rather than a main course, but not all apps are created equal. Hussong’s Cantina at The Shoppes at Mandalay Place is celebrating its fifth anniversary with the addition of new menu items like Puebla’s style guacamole (with bacon!) and BBQ pork quesadillas. For me, it’s an old reliable that still stands out.
My love affair with Hussong’s grilled corn appetizer ($6) started the first week it opened and has not lessened in intensity over the years. Already a fan of corn in general, I had been wary of similar dishes in Mexican restaurants because I feared how spicy it would be. Once I realized I wasn’t as much of a spice wimp as I had previously thought and also noticed chili flakes aren’t too harsh, anyway, I decided to give it a try.

The week after Thanksgiving (more casually known as next week), Vegas will toast the 80th anniversary of the end of prohibition on December 5 or Repeal Day. We have a lot of made-up holidays in this country that we use as excuses to drink (like Valentine's Day for us single folks), but this is one that actually makes sense, and it’s a damn fine excuse to hit up your local bar and suck down a few handcrafted cocktails.
In honor of days that are beer again, Golden Gate has officially dubbed its nameless casino bar, Bar Prohibition! We don't know about you, but we take the exclamation mark as a challenge. Here’s a rundown of what else is happening around town. Be sure to check back as we’ll update the listing as more events.
As someone posted on their Facebook page, "when the hell did this happen?"
This writer was just as astonished when she visited the Fashion Show Mall last week and saw a storefront for LUSH inside. The British brand is known for "fresh, handmade cosmetics," as the tagline goes, but had only offered its wares inside Mandalay Bay for years.
The first Guinness store in America opened up inside the Shoppes at Mandalay Place last year, but we didn't really hop in 'til only recently. You might say our arrival came slower than the service next door although the folks at Mandalay Bay may want to compare it to a slow, but steady pour of Guinness. Visitors can't buy a pint in the store, but one is not too far away. That may be the only disappointment in store for Guinness fans.
Well-designed and high-quality T-shirts from Guinness to Smithwicks (some scripted with Las Vegas, some not) are priced at a reasonable $25 (or about $15 less than we expected). Buy two and take one free from the sale rack. Although, that rack on our visit was slim pickings and for ladies only. Hats, coasters, towels, key chains and other goods are also printed with the Guinness logo. But, one product caught our eye since it's exclusive to this very Las Vegas store.

We've recently reported on the influx of pizza places coming to The Strip, both real and rumored.
It seemed a good excuse to try out the latest newcomer, Slice of Vegas in The Shoppes at Mandalay Place. It's right next to Burger Bar and two down from Hussong’s Cantina, which has the same parent company. This is a no-fuss pizza restaurant, hoping to catch folks walking between Mandalay Bay and Luxor. And if you just want to buy a slice, they have a counter where you can grab and go.
Got to be a movie star, a new Strip headliner, or celebrity restaurateur in the building right? No - it was a photographer.
This weekend, Australian landscape photographer Peter Lik opened his latest Vegas gallery within the The Shoppes at Mandalay Place (just steps from his old gallery among the same shops). A slew of well-to-do collectors turned up to meet the artist who rarely makes public appearances, to see his latest creations and to covet other limited prints that adorn some very fancy Las Vegas homes and offices.
And, we mean fancy. Like many zeros. On one episode of Pawn Stars, Rick and the gang bought a signed print for $5,000. A quick Google suggests they may have made a very serious profit.
Lik holds a record for selling a photograph for a million dollars to an anonymous buyer. Maybe they were in the crowd this night. We overheard the phrase from one collector, "some people like boats..." Apparently, it's an either or option. Stay home and gaze at images of nature or go out on a boat and experience it. Although, your boat may not be increasing in value like some of these pictures. Pete Lik's works currently (consult you friendly financial adviser) seem to be keeping, or exceeding their purchase price. Our VegasChatter photos can be bought for far cheaper. Call us.
Lik's large-format pictures have turned him into an adventurer for art, seeking out remote and inhospitable locales to catch the right shot. And, it's worth it. This is a multi-million dollar concern and they can afford to operate four galleries in Las Vegas alone. The new store lets the casual fan in on the action, too. They've set up a computer, sadly not working on the night, that will email you a complete digital copy of one of his books. Which is generous. And, there are other Lik Galleries at Venetian and Caesars, if nothing in this location matches the color of your carpet.

We’re about to declare this officially open
Ole! Hussong’s Cantina opens today in The Shoppes at Mandalay Place. We found it at the weekend lurking next door to the Burger Bar and opposite Lush. And when we peered through those curtains (because they’re kind of teasing us, seeing as they’re not entirely covering the place), this is what we saw:
We’re liking the posters on the walls, and we’re loving the pillar box red they’ve used. And those tables look pretty well spaced out as well.
Don’t forget, either, that this is the place which promised “the best party every night”. We’d like to say we’ll be judging it harshly, but if their margaritas really are “unusually strong” then we’re pretty much sold already.
