It's Not Just the Pickles at Todd English's P.U.B. That Disappoints

March 3, 2010 at 7:10 PM | by juliana | 2 Comments

We were quite taken with the long-awaited Todd English P.U.B inside Aria, even if the upscale beer chugging contest could lend itself to becoming a fratty place to hang out.

Yet it was a different story for a reader who wrote in to us saying:

I visited the Todd English pub on Friday of the opening week. Reception and hosts were warm and inviting. We ordered Caesar salad, oysters, stone crab, sliders, and the roast turkey platter. Shellfish and stone crab were fresh although the TE signature cocktail sauce tasted like glorified common ketchup.

The Caesar salad was fresh but anchovy and the sharp tang of Parmesan was lacking and strangely included tomatoes. The sliders were perfectly cooked and tasty. The turkey platter was unacceptably dry...Bone dry.

Todd English's P.U.B: Hold the Pickles and It Could Be Great

Hurrah! So Todd English’s P.U.B is finally open in the Crystals. We’ve shown you what it looks like, we’ve told you about the eggtimer trick (down your pint in seven seconds and you don’t have to pay for it). Now let’s get onto the heavy stuff – what the food is like. Our tipster told us that prices would be very cheap for the Strip, and the menu would be based on a "huge English pub style menu". Here’s what we found.

Guess what? P.U.B from Todd English has missed yet another opening date. A tipster told us to expect the restaurant opening last night but then emailed us to say that we should try Sunday instead.

Okey doke. But this is the last time. Then we officially start to lose interest.

We'll update you on Monday morning. In the meantime, got any tips about the delay or what's going on behind the scene? Let us know

Keep It On the D.L. But P.U.B Set To Soft-Open on Thursday

Where: 3720 S Las Vegas Blvd [map], 89109
February 16, 2010 at 1:59 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

We've been eagerly wondering when Todd English's Public Urban Bar (aka P.U.B.) would be opening and now we might have an answer. A secret tipster let us know that the restaurant would be soft-opening on Thursday! Yippee!

That's all that we know at this point so we'll have to pop over there on Thursday to check it out. We did check out Todd's website (which is in need of a design tune-up) but there is no mention of P.U.B. yet. And we're still left wondering what's going to be on the menu here.

Todd English Goes on Nightline, P.U.B. Remains Unopened

Where: 3720 S Las Vegas Blvd [map], 89109
February 12, 2010 at 8:28 PM | by juliana | 1 Comment

We mentioned earlier this week that Todd English is a very, very busy man. Well, he shows no sign of letting up, even if it means delaying the opening of his newest restaurant.

English been doing the full-court press on himself and his restaurants, with his latest score happening on ABC's Nightline.

Airing tonight, the special talks about the chef's special connection with love and food. He reveals that he loves "this English chef I love who sucks her finger when she's tasting something, and I think that's so sexy." Er. Ok.

Meanwhile, the PUB at Aria remains unopened. A reservations expert at Aria said they weren't sure when it would open but hopefully sometime next week. Yes, "hopefully."

Todd English's P.U.B. Not Quite O.F.B.

Where: 3720 S Las Vegas Blvd [map], 89109
February 8, 2010 at 4:55 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

UPDATE 2.12.10:: PUB not open. "Hopefully" next week.

UPDATE: According to The Crystals, P.U.B. will open on February 11.

OFB: Open for Business.

Todd English's Public Urban Bar or PUB was supposed to open yesterday, judging from the signage in front of the restaurant but when we strolled by last night, the lights were on but the windows were papered up.

The space, wedged between Julian Serrano at Aria and the entrance to The Crystals, has exterior signage and it looks like the interior is almost finished.

Meanwhile, according to the Boston Globe, English is a busy man and perhaps this is the reason for the PUB delay.

He is taping a pilot of a new TV show, and helping launch a men’s fashion collection at Club Monaco. He also has plans to open a cupcake shop on Beacon Hill with his daughter, Isabelle, start a line of children’s food products named after the character Eloise, and open restaurants in Las Vegas and at New York’s Plaza Hotel.

Hopefully, it's just a matter of training the staff before P.U.B is ready to open. As always, we'll keep you posted but if you've got any scoop, send it to us.

Will Todd English's Pub Still Open on Sunday?

Where: 3730 Las Vegas Boulevard South [map], 89109
February 3, 2010 at 5:56 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

If the construction signage inside Aria is to be believed, Todd English's P.U.B. (Public Urban Bar) is going to open on Sunday. Or will it?

An open call for jobs was held last week but so far we haven't seen or heard any other buzz.

Considering that the NY Post gave Todd's other restaurant at CityCenter, Beso a major "Pass!", he should cook up something spectacular here. Whether he does or not, we'll tell you next week.

CHEF ORGY!

As we've been telling you for quite some time, the restaurants at Aria Resort and Casino are going to require some serious stomach training.

During the CityCenter Grand Opening madness, we were able to sample bites at each of the restaurants as well as admire the restaurant spaces. Since we will probably roll out individual restaurant reviews throughout the year, we're only going to concern you today with photos of the restaurants.

We've broken it down into two parts: Upstairs and Downstairs.

The Upstairs restaurants, placed near the Viva Elvis theater on the Promenade, include: Sirio, Michael Mina's American Fish, Jean-Georges Steakhouse and The Buffet.

The Downstairs restaurants include: Blossom and Lemongrass off the casino floor; Sage, Julian Serrano, Bar Masa and the forthcoming Todd English gastropub off the lobby and registration; Jean-Philippe Patisserie and the casual Cafe Vettro near the back entrance of Aria.

For some reason (probably: vodka cranberries) we didn't snap a picture of the Cafe. D'oh. Sorry for that. We'll get right on it. For now, enjoy the food porn and chef orgy.

Note: There are even more eateries than the ones we photographed here but these are the ones with the big chef names behind 'em.

Ring in the New Year With Eva Longoria at Beso at CityCenter

Where: 3780 Las Vegas Blvd South [map], 89109-4312

As prime time’s reigning sex kitten, we’re not the least bit surprised that Eva Longoria Parker, actress slash restauranteur/self-proclaimed domestic diva has chosen the most celebratory day of the whole damn year – New Year’s Eve – for the grand opening of her latest restaurant endeavor, Beso at MGM’s CityCenter .

Where else can you ring in the new year with like, a bajillion other people, heaploads of media attention and party goers willing to shell out a mortgage payment in the name of one helluva of dayafter hangover? That would be Vegas and an A-List destination like the to-be Beso.

Quit Yer Crying on Top Chef: It's a Cooking Show, Fer Crissakes

August 27, 2009 at 3:46 PM | by globetrotting gourmet | 0 Comments

Let’s get right down to it. It’s only week two of Top Chef Las Vegas and we’re already rolling out eyes at the gambling themed gimmicks and unabashed promotion of The M Resort. Yeah, we get it. It’s a nice resort and the host hotel for Season 6, but fer crissakes, pretty please stop shoving it down our throats.

So, last night’s episode wasn’t exactly one for the memory books, aside from Ashley’s minor meltdown surrounding the Bachelor/Bachelorette party Elimination Challenge with special guest judge Todd English the celeb chef behind Olives at Bellagio.

But back to Ashley. She’s a lesbian. Big deal. But, she (rightfully) has strong opinions about the legal definition of matrimony. There’s a time and place to express such personal beliefs, and we’re kinda thinking she should’ve shut up and cooked at this juncture of the episode (not to be insensitive or non-PC, but seriously).

Anyway, it was a predictable battle of the sexes where after a quick likes/dislikes Q&A with the to be betrothed, the guys cooked for the bachelorettes and the gals cooked for the bachelors.

Eva Longoria's Beso Restaurant Will Open at CityCenter

June 22, 2009 at 3:37 PM | by Erika Pope | 0 Comments

Our favorite Vegas gossip guru Norm Clarke reported in the LVRJ over the weekend a desperate housewife and one especially well-coiffed chef are partnering to open the second Beso restaurant at CityCenter.

Eva Longoria Parker and Todd English of Olives restaurant fame (the Boston original has an outpost at Bellagio) will bring their Latin-themed steakhouse concept from Hollywood to Vegas when CityCenter debuts. The Hollywood Beso Web site describes the restaurant this way:

Beso takes a Latin approach to classic Steakhouse cuisine, featuring an eclectic and contemporary dinner menu. We proudly offer naturally raised and sustainably farmed Brandt Beef, daily fresh seafood prepared in our wood burning oven, ceviches, flatbreads and seasonal specials.

Mmmmm. Sounds good. While Vegas already has steakhouses a-go-go and some respectable Latin-flavored restaurants (we like Isla at TI and Dos Caminos at the Palazzo), but none we can think of combine these two popular culinary genres.
