A Good Guy Fought a Resort Fee And the Good Guy Won

Where: 3300 Las Vegas Blvd South [map], 89109
June 3, 2010 at 11:30 AM | by juliab | 0 Comments

Our top dislike about staying in Vegas? Resort fees. We hate ‘em, we’ll never stop hating ‘em, and we won’t stop calling places out when they “adjust” (read: increase) them without adjusting what’s included.

So we did a little air punching (different from fist-pumping, honest) when we read this story over at East Coast Gambler, about a TI guest who fought the resort fee, and won.

The full story is here at Elliott.org, but in a nutshell, the guy – one George Lilley - booked over the phone, and wasn’t informed of the fee until checking in. When he pointed out that he was unlikely to avail himself of the notary services and weekday admission to Christian Audiger nightclub included in the $20 daily charge, he was basically told to go swivel.

So instead of arguing with the hotel, he took it up with American Express, who have credited is account because:

The merchant has not yet provided the information necessary to resolve your claim.

Cowboy, Take Us Away...From Gilley's

April 26, 2010 at 6:14 PM | by juliana | 1 Comment

The bull at Gilley's getting milked er...fixed.

Last week we popped into the much anticipated Gilley's Saloon, Dance Hall & Bar-B-Que, just a few days after its official opening on April 15. Many folks have long-awaited Gilley's return to the Strip inside Treasure Island so we wanted to check it out as soon as we possibly could. But perhaps we should have waited a little longer.

We entered Gilley's through an unmarked entrance off the casino floor at TI which brought us directly to The Saloon where the line dancing, bull-riding and beer-drinking happens. Yet instead of the hoe-down we were expecting, we found a smattering of folk hanging around the bars. The bull was looking forlorn in his corner and no one was attempting to dosey-do. Then again, it was a Tuesday night. Even country lovers need to take it easy.

Mount Up! Gilley's To Open April 15

April 7, 2010 at 5:25 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

We hope you have spent the winter months indoor practicing your mechanical bull skills because word is Gilley's Saloon, Dance Hall & Bar-B-Que is reopening at Treasure Island on April 15.

There is a chance that the spot could open a few days earlier than that on the 13th, which is what we saw on Robin Leach's Twitter. Or perhaps he mistook a five for a three because according to the bar's own website, April 15 is their grand opening night with performances by the band, Austin's Law. But downing cold ones and listening to country rock are just the tip of the manure patch for all the things you can do at Gilley's.

To get your dance hall dance on, the space will be open from 6 to 8pm and again from 2 to 4am. The site is promising dance lessons in the future but you can also occupy your time on Tuesday nights with karaoke starting at 10pm.

Who Will Stay on the Bull Longer: Gilley's or PBR Rock Bar?

February 23, 2010 at 11:33 PM | by juliana | 4 Comments

Last week we got word that something called the PBR Rock Bar would open in the old Hawaiian Tropic Zone at Planet Hollywood. We're still waiting on word as to what exactly PBR stands for but we're thinking it's got to something to do with Professional Bull Riders. And if that ends up being true, we just might have a showdown on the Strip for the best mechanical bull riding hangout.

That's because Gilley's Saloon, Dance Hall and Bar-B-Que is set to open on April 16, according to Fox 5. The space will open next to the Siren's Cove and it recently held a job fair which is very promising news.

The New 'O' Spa at TI Wants You To Look Like Ukranian Beauty Queen

Where: 3300 Las Vegas Blvd. S [map], 89109
February 1, 2010 at 3:51 PM | by globetrotting gourmet | 0 Comments

Ukranian beauty queen, model and actress Oleksandra Nikolayenko-Ruffin is drop dead gorgeous, but does she really have the caché/recognition to design and run a self-named spa? (This has replaced the WET spa, FYI.) Was she blessed with unusually good Eastern European genes or does she know something we don’t know when it comes to having a kick ass beauty regimen?

Hmm…No wait, we think there’s a simpler answer here – she’s hitched to Treasure Island owner Phil Ruffin so nepotism reigns supreme.

The raven-tressed beauty recently unveiled Oleksandra Spa & Salon, which offers treatments hand picked by Mrs. Ruffin. She’s visited some of the world’s most luxurious spas and salons and has compiled a selection of her favorite treatments at the new spa including:

What’s the Latest With Social House?

Where: 3300 Las Vegas Blvd. S. [map], 89109
October 27, 2009 at 5:32 PM | by Whalehead | 0 Comments

Over the summer, VegasChatter dined at Social House at Treasure Island one night only to find out that it was one of the last nights that the restaurant would be open. The waitresses informed us that they had only heard about the closing themselves as they came into work.

After some tussle with the folks at PURE, who denied to us that the restaurant was closing, we learned that the Social House closure was 100 percent official, with the intentions of it reopening elsewhere on the Strip at a later date. (It closed on July 5.)

At the time Social House closed, Pure representatives said the decision had nothing to do with Phil Ruffin’s purchase of TI from MGM/Mirage. It was a business decision, they insisted. Still, one can certainly speculate (especially since representatives from TI did not return calls seeking comment).

So far, there’s no news on where or when the place will reappear. Although we've heard whispers that Social House might make a move into CityCenter when it opens in December.

Nevertheless, the old Social House space received new life on Aug. 10, when TI opened Khotan, a pan-Asian restaurant.

Got Nothing Better To Do? LeAnn Rimes Does Treasure Island Theater

Where: 3300 Las Vegas Blvd South [map], 89109
October 21, 2009 at 8:23 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

Keep a close eye on your significant other, because everybody's favorite homewrecker, LeeAnn Rimes takes to the stage at Treasure Island Theater for a limited engagement starting tomorrow night. (We're kidding about your significant other...kinda.)

Best noted for her 1996 debut single, "Blue" the country crooner (and Lifetime Movie "Northern Lights" actress) was the youngest singer in the history of the Country Music Association to receive a nomination for the Horizon award at the age of 13. Nowadays, her on-screen action and real life affair with Lifetime Movie co-star Eddie Cibrian seems to be stealing the spotlight, as Rimes announced plans last month her plans to part with hubby Dean Sheremet. Tabloid drama aside, if country is your thang, the Grammy winning artist sure can belt 'em out.

Tickets start at $69 but TI is offering a special deal to bring your friend for only $25. Call (866) 712-9308 for details or go online to book.

Locals Encouraged To 'Arrive. Survive. Revive.' Every Sunday Night

Where: 3300 Las Vegas Blvd. [map], 89109-8916
September 25, 2009 at 12:37 PM | by globetrotting gourmet | 0 Comments

Now that Social House has been shuttered (R.I.P.), Christian Audigier The Nightclub is sitting pretty to steal the nightlife spotlight at . But will the tacky clothing proprietor turned nightclub owner succeed? Special events for locals with free booze for the ladies says yes.

In an effort to increase the in-town industry clientele (sorry Jon Gosselin and Audrina), the Ed Hardy designer has brought back Industry Night with a new "Sunday Funday" promotion. Although the promo sounds more like a McDonald’s happy meal deal than a swank night on the town, it’s a great deal for the local kitten squad.

An Alternative for Housekeeping Cart Kleptomaniacs

August 12, 2009 at 5:14 PM | by Whalehead | 3 Comments

An unsuspecting housekeeping cart lies in harm's way in the hallways of The Mirage.

OK, admit it. When you stay at a hotel with bath products you like, you totally raid the housekeeping carts. Nowadays, at least at a number of Las Vegas hotels, instead of breaking the law, you can go about procuring your favorite soaps and shampoos on the level: by buying them.

Many properties—especially those which have partnered with high-end vendors to create signature brands—sell larger versions of their in-room bath products at spas and on-site gift shops. Prices range from $9.99 to $23.99. Here’s a closer look at the highlights of Sin City’s signature bath products, and a rundown on where you can go to purchase some of the goodies to enjoy at home.

Ahoy! There's Love on the High Seas on the TI Pirate Ship

Where: 3300 S. Las Vegas Blvd. [map], 89109
July 13, 2009 at 1:58 PM | by globetrotting gourmet | 1 Comment

So the whole idea of pirate-themed nuptials kinda creeps us out (unless you’re marrying Johnny Depp, of course), but a quick "pirate themed wedding" search on Google yielded more than a million results, so maybe we’re not exactly in the majority. Read about our fave pending pirate-themed nuptials here.

If eye patches and parrots are your thing, consider walking the (ahem) plank to legal coupledom with a wedding on board Treasure Island’s pirate “Song Ship” in Siren’s Cove.

Guests (puffy shirts and pegged pirate pants optional) sit along an outdoor patio overlooking Siren’s Cove, facing the Las Vegas Strip. The groom, best man and ship's captain board the pirate ship and wait for the bride’s dramatic debut along a rose-covered walkway. For the right amount of riches, rogue pirates will serve as witnesses and a pirate may even swing down from the crow’s nest to deliver the wedding rings. A live feed is available for those not able to attend in person.

And while it's your wedding and you can certainly wear whatever you like, we strongly urge you to consider the look that Brides.com has put forth for a TI wedding.

The Enchantment Wedding Package starts at $2,599 per couple, plus a $360 fee for Saturday or holiday ceremonies. Call the Wedding Chapel at Treasure Island at (702) 894-7700 for complete package details.

Not Much Treasure To Be Found at Treasure Island

Where: 3300 Las Vegas Blvd. S. [map], 89109
July 2, 2009 at 1:59 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

Amidst all the drama unfolding below at Social House, we were able to have a fairly decent stay upstairs in the renovated rooms of Treasure Island.

You've seen the video tour; now we'll walk you through the rest of our stay. Overall, we liked the rooms which were spacious and equipped with new-ish amenities and decor. But we still think we paid too much for what we got.
