Bring Back Elvis, Hookers and Mobsters: It's Zowie Bowie's Vegas

Where: 11011 W Charleston Blvd [map], 89135
September 1, 2010 at 4:37 PM | by juliab | 5 Comments

UPDATE: Ignore any reference to lobsters you may have seen. As our commenter pointed out, he wants hookers and mobsters back. Which makes a lot more sense. Sorry, we must have got the giggles at the word "hookers" and lost concentration.

Another Wednesday, another My Vegas. It’s hard trying to keep tabs on all the happenin’ stuff in Sin City, so we’re calling in expert advice. From now on, every time we bump into a Vegas celeb, we’ll grill them on where they rate and what they like to do (yes, handily, this can also double as a stalker’s guide to Vegas).

This week, VegasChatter Towers is abuzz with excitement at the imminent return of Zowie Bowie to Red Rock (they kick off their residency Friday night), so to mark our giddiness properly, we asked the pair (Marley Taylor and Chris Phillips) to talk us through their favorite spots. Liking that zebra-print couch they’re on? It’s a VIP booth in the Rocks Lounge, where they’ll be based.

Before we start the video, we’d just like to note how completely enchanted we were by them – we’d been told by lots of people how lovely they were, but they were in the Tom Lowe realms of super-lovely. Funny, too - they more than lived up to expectation. And how lush does Marley look as a brunette? Anyhoo, enough gushing and crushing, here’s where to find them.

Fish Suppers and Bloody Beers: How to Do Vegas, Chippendales Style

August 25, 2010 at 6:57 PM | by juliab | 0 Comments

Another Wednesday, another My Vegas. It’s hard trying to keep tabs on all the happenin’ stuff in Sin City, so we’re calling in expert advice. From now on, every time we bump into a Vegas celeb, we’ll grill them on where they rate and what they like to do (yes, handily, this can also double as a stalker’s guide to Vegas).

Last week we kicked off with Mr Las Vegas, Norm Clarke. This week, we branch out with what must be two of the hunkiest men on the Strip, Billy Jeffrey and Juan DeAngelo from the Chippendales. We caught them at their calendar launch party at Venus Pool Club. (Excuse us for shouting, it was really loud).

He Loves Strip Views And Hates Bottle Service: Welcome to Norm Clarke's World

August 18, 2010 at 7:15 PM | by juliab | 13 Comments

What better way to cure your hump day blues than an introduction to our brand new feature, My Vegas? Yes, it’s hard trying to keep tabs on all the happenin’ stuff in Sin City, so we thought it was time to call in some expert advice. From now on, every time we bump into a Vegas celeb, we’ll grill them on where they rate and what they like to do (yes, handily, this can also double as a stalker’s guide to Vegas).

There was no debate over who to kick this off with: Mr Las Vegas, best-by-a-mile gossip columnist, and debonair man about town*, Norm Clarke. We've always been huge Norm fans (we're devoted to his column, and his Twitter is Vegas scoop central), so it’s with humungous excitement that we bring you his top Vegas picks. Précis below, but for the full glory, watch the vids.

Holly Madison Reveals Secret Geek Side, is Hot for Hotel Carpets

August 17, 2010 at 11:47 AM | by juliab | 2 Comments

We were already fans enough of the lovely Holly Madison here at VegasChatter, but finding out that she’s as much of a Vegas geek as we are has only fired our crush a little bit more.

We noticed a couple of weeks ago that Holly tweeted about the new carpets at Paris, saying that she didn’t approve of the "tres chic" (Paris' words) new carpet and preferred the old Impressionisty one.

Then we didn’t think any more of it.

But then! But then! Last week she tweeted this gem:

Official: Frank Marino Is Twice As Important As Frank Sinatra

Where: 3535 Las Vegas Boulevard South [map], 89109
February 26, 2010 at 2:07 PM | by juliab | 0 Comments

Starting to feel a bit sorry for Frank Sinatra here. Not only has Matt Goss nicked his singing kudos, what with all the “new Sinatra” quotes flying around, but now Frank Marino has eclipsed him on the Strip’s Walk of Stars.

Marino opened his drag show Divas Las Vegas last night at the Imperial Palace (when we say “opened”, we mean “officially opened” – it’s been in previews since October), and to celebrate, official Vegas peeps presented him with a slab for the Walk of Stars to go outside the casino.

Not bad. He’s already got a star, outside the Riviera, where his An Evening at La Cage ran for a mammoth 23 years. He’s also got a key to the city (in his own words, “I swear it’s to the back door,”), and a road named after him – Frank Marino Drive (again, in his own words, “it goes both ways”).

Steve Wynn Goes Shopping at Art Basel, Comes Home With Stallone Painting

Where: 3131 Las Vegas Boulevard South [map], 89109
December 4, 2009 at 2:54 PM | by MsRebecca | 0 Comments

Art has never been the first thing we seek out in Vegas, although we bet the galleries at the Bellagio and Wynn are decent places to escape when the sound of the slot sonatas starts to send us batty. But the news of Steve Wynn’s latest acquisition has us rethinking our art aversion. While in Miami for Art Basel this week, Wynn purchased a painting by Sylvester Stallone. Uh huh. Rocky. Rambo. Sly. Judge Dredd. He paints.

Apparently, Stallone has been a part-time painter for 30 years, but his foray into the Art Basel world puts him in the professional category. What else do you call it when you sell your painting to one of the most famous collectors in America for $40,000? Wynn took a shine to an abstract piece, while another art gallery bigwig bought a Stallone self-portrait for $50,000.

Hmm...Donny Osmond, Veteran Performer and Dancer, Wins 'Dancing with The Stars'

November 25, 2009 at 12:07 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

Donny working the crowd at The Flamingo.

Don't get us wrong. We looove Donny Osmond. He is one sexy grandfather and we're thinking about converting to Mormonism if it means looking as good as he does when we are 75 52.

But having just won "Dancing with The Stars" Season 9 last night, we can't help but wonder if that's a fair pick for a winner. After all, this is DONNY OSMOND. He's been performing--dancing and singing--since he was in diapers. He's STILL performing today at The Flamingo with his sister, Marie.

Don't you think he has far too much of an advantage here? Oh well, guess the producers of DWTS should have considered this before they put him on the show.

Now, we are just curious how dates for the Donny and Marie show will be affected when Donny goes on the DWTS tour. The duo renewed their contract at The Flamingo through October 2010. We assume it's show business as usual but we at least expect one DWTS-dedicated number during his show now.

Tickets start at $90 for balcony seats and range up to $255 for a VIP experience which includes front-of-stage seating and an after-show photo with the stars.

An Unlikely Urban Oasis: The Hassle-Free Las Vegas Sign

November 10, 2009 at 5:00 PM | by juliab | 2 Comments

One of our first impressions of Vegas was that nothing is sacred. The beautiful buildings of Europe? Turned into easy-access travesties. The king of pop? “Remembered” by some properly dodgy impersonators. Fashion sense? That went out the window a long time ago.

But, turns out, we were wrong. Because there is one thing that’s sacred in this town, and that’s the Las Vegas sign. Not only is it kept immaculate in its own little park with its fence and its gravel and its palm trees, but it’s actually kept free from the general Vegas melee by law.

Don’t believe us? Check out the sign on the bin here, which is about 20 foot away from the sign (because the sign is too special for a bin right beside it). No sales, no advertising, no handbills and definitely no tables and chairs within 50 feet of the sign. How very civilised. Next time we tire of running the card-snapper gauntlet on the Strip, we’ll be heading down south.

The Hofbrauhaus: Where Else Would You Celebrate Oktoberfest in Vegas?

Where: 4510 Paradise Rd., Las Vegas [map], 89169
September 29, 2009 at 7:43 PM | by Whalehead | 0 Comments

October is right around the corner, which means that the Oktoberfest festivities have been in full-swing at the Bavarian-themed Hofbrauhaus Las Vegas on Paradise Road.

The annual event, which generally stretches from mid-September through Halloween, celebrates beer of all kinds, meaning the brew-centric restaurant hosts a bunch of promotions designed to get people drunk.

The party started Sept. 19 during a kickoff event with Siegfried and Roy (sans tigers, of course) with more Vegas celebrity guests scheduled to do the weekly keg-tapping honors. This past weekend, magician Lance Burton hosted a special keg-tapping party (contrary to reports, he did not rely on magic to do the deed). Other keg-tapping hosts on the calendar include The Amazing Jonathan (Oct. 2), Holly Madison (Oct. 9), The Fab Four (Oct. 16) and Carrot Top (Oct. 30).

What It's Like On the Zappos Headquarters Tour

Where: 2280 Corporate Circle Suite, #100 [map], 89074
September 21, 2009 at 6:06 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

A friend of VegasChatter did something we've been dying to do for a while--he took the Zappos.com Tour, a free behind-the-scenes look at the culture and the business of the Zappos headquarters in Henderson. Here's all that he saw. Enjoy!

The Zappos Royalty Tour
Ok, that’s not really what they call it. They actually refer to it as "an experience of the Zappos environment." I thought my name was more fitting. Where else but Zappos would you get to meet a cagillionaire, a life coach, have your photo taken wearing a crown as you sit on a royal throne, and learn how to take a company from zero to 1 billion dollars in sales in 10 years … all in 90 minutes? Needless to say, this is not your typical stodgy corporate tour.

It was actually a lot of fun, kind of like a pub crawl without the alcohol.

Oh Noes! The Iconic Las Vegas Sign Gets Tagged

July 14, 2009 at 4:09 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

Graffiti vandals tagged the iconic Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign with red spraypaint overnight last night and the city is mad as hell about it.

Not only is the city offering a $500 reward for the capture of the vandals, but Mayor Oscar Goodman is calling for a public humiliation of the perpetrator by putting him in a stockade downtown and allowing everyone to come up and put paint on the vandal's nose. Um...ok....

This is the first time in more than a decade that the sign has been vandalized. Immediately, we headed over to the sign's Twitter feed but they didn't have much to say except links to stories about the vandalism and photos of the tagging.

Meanwhile, the city had the graffiti scrubbed off real fast to the tune of $600. All is well in Fabulous Las Vegas sign land again.

Anna Kournikova Has Rough Night at Lavo

Where: 3327 Las Vegas Boulevard South [map], 89109
June 30, 2009 at 6:06 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

Anna Kournikova showed up for the Hardbat Classic, a table tennis tournament, on Saturday at the Palazzo and while the former tennis star gamely played some ping-pong er table tennis earlier in the day, she displayed some unsportmanslike conduct later in the night at Lavo.

The NY Post reports:

Kournikova and her pals were partying at Lavo after attending the Hardbat Classic table tennis tournament when a woman at the next table "threw a drink at Anna. She felt Anna was invading her space," our source said. Kournikova "sprung into action" and starting screaming at the woman and shoving her. "It was a big fight," the spy said. The woman was kicked out only after leaving Kournikova with some vicious scratch marks on her neck. Kournikova's rep didn't return calls.
