Bar-Hopping Around Vegas

August 11, 2014 at 4:35 PM | by | Comments (2)

Our long-running Sip or Pour series has covered some of the best bars in Vegas. Usually, we highlight two different types of bars, those ideal for a stop before you move on to the next one and those where you can chill all night long (the party in the street being optional). But, what about one ultimate night of fun and drinks and more drinks and maybe some shots? Here's how we would spend one epic night in Vegas. If you follow in our footsteps, make sure to cab it or bring along the ultimate designated driver. (And, in some cases, it's just a short walk!)

Downtown Changes You Might Not Know About

July 18, 2014 at 4:07 PM | by | Comments (7)

There's more happening in Downtown Vegas than fast-changing drinking laws. (Although, if you haven't heard yet, there's another you should be aware of.) Here's a roundup of what's taking place, from remodels to new spots to sip and sup:

Mermaid's is getting a substantial refresh. Its snack bar is up and running again after a week-long renovation according to our @sammasseur who also spied new casino carpeting, new slot chairs and even new slot machines themselves. Sam was told the casino bar along with the cashier cage are next in line for an update. The biggest news is that the casino will covert its slot machines from coin to TITO (Ticket In, Ticket Out) in about two months time.

Drinking In Some Great Spots Downtown

March 21, 2014 at 2:57 PM | by | Comments (3)

Get ready! Coming straight at you is a special version of Sip or Pour where we head downtown to highlight some awesome drinking spots. So let's get to it! Here are two bars that'll either have you savoring the evening ahead or pouring on a little fun!

Sip

For a quite unorthodox drinking experience, you should try your best to get into The Laundry Room. One of downtown's -- and perhaps Vegas' best open secrets -- this little bar is actually a backroom of the Commonwealth. You can only get in with a reservation or a password, but for those who are able to drop in for cocktails, it will be memorable.

Named 'Best Las Vegas Cocktail Bar' by the Nightlife & Bar Awards (the secret's out), the Fremont East venue is small, intimate and quiet which goes against just about every bar experience in Vegas. But, it works. Styled after a prohibition speakeasy, it's the creative cocktails that are the standout feature here.

Bacon in a glass? Works for us.

Who To Ask For At: The Laundry Room

June 20, 2013 at 6:57 PM | by | Comments (0)

There is certainly no shortage of places to grab a drink in Las Vegas. After a bit, though -- to this writer at least -- they all sort of blend together. Always on the search for the best bars and the best bartenders in town, we highly recommend the Laundry Room and its lead bartender June Kang.

The Laundry Room is the semi-secret speakeasy hidden inside downtown's Commonwealth. In order to get in, you have to text a slightly guarded phone number. This isnt a place for shouting, fighting, and jagerbombs. There is a strict code of conduct that patrons are expected to follow. While that may seem pretentious to some, it does result in a refined, grown-up experience. The Laundry Room might be the best "second date" bar in town. With no live music or televisions, there is nothing to distract you from conversation with whoever you came with.

Get A Free Tat, Drink For Life* at Commonwealth

February 5, 2013 at 12:04 PM | by | Comments (0)

Considering your first or next tat? As we've documented before, ink inspirations comes in different strokes for different folks. If you haven't been flushed with royal inspiration, aren't flush with Laura Croft money, don't want Caesar to stay here or Bill's closure didn't strike the same chord as Sahara's did, downtown's Commonwealth wants to tickle your fancy with a tat idea.

10 Reasons Prissy Girls Should Go Downtown

January 21, 2013 at 7:41 PM | by | Comments (4)

This VegasChatter writer loves the Las Vegas Strip. Itís high profile, glamorous, ever-evolving and over-the-top, just like her. Going to Downtown Vegas after partying on The Strip is like downgrading from a high-end department store to a swap meet. Sure, youíll find similar things, but they wonít be as nice or expensive and it smells. But, if you can get past that, and all the homeless people, youíll end up having a good time in a much less pretentious atmosphere!

Here are 10 reasons why even the prissiest of girls should visit Downtown Vegas:

1. Casual Atmosphere

This VegasChatter'er loves her stilettos and sparkly dresses, but for those nights when you feel more like flats and (cringe) wearing leggings as pants, thereís always downtown. No judgment or heel rats, just fun.

2. Downtown Cocktail Room

This is one of the places that made Downtown worth the trip. Recommended by one of our hipster BFFs (read: bike-riding, PBR-drinking writer), the nearly hidden spot is dark, plush and serves artfully crafted cocktails with ingredients weíve never heard before.

Prohibition-Style Hootch Is The Bee's Knees In Vegas

December 19, 2012 at 12:51 PM | by | Comment (1)

Ever since Boardwalk Empire hit the airwaves, people canít get enough of the Prohibition craze. Hot vintage jazz and handcrafted cocktails are gaining in popularity, and these things can be found in Las Vegas, both downtown, on The Strip and off.

We've covered downtown's Commonwealth already. It is a newcomer to the awesome Fremont East part of town. What we didnít see before was the top secret speakeasy hidden inside the bar. Recently, that changed. This writer was sitting in the bar talking to a few pretty girls (how we roll) when the manager of the bar invited them to take a peek. We, of course, tagged along.

Pub Crawl? Passe. Cycle Pub Vegas? Ding, Ding, Ding!

Where: 201 N. 3rd Street [map], 89101
November 28, 2012 at 7:37 PM | by | Comment (1)

This is a PR photo. We're blaming the quality of the photos to come on being in motion,
*not* on being in our cups.

Who wants to cruise downtown in a cab or in your own vehicle? We prefer the open-air Cycle Pub!

We absolutely love downtown Las Vegas, drinking and riding a bike. And, thanks to owner/operator Russell Davis, we did all three as we climbed aboard his Cycle Pub Vegas. Okay, it's not really a pub, as riders arenít allowed to drink and pedal at the same time, but Davisí bicycle built for 14 took us on a unique pub crawl to our favorite downtown drinkeries -- where we moseyed up to the bar for Moscow Mules and Stellas.

Sizing Up Downtown's Commonwealth

Where: 525 E. Fremont Street [map], 89101
November 26, 2012 at 7:19 PM | by | Comment (1)

Last week, we teased a review of downtown's newest 6,000-square-foot, pre-prohibition-inspired drinking establishment, Commonwealth. Owners aimed to emulate a hundred-year-old bar plucked from the cobblestone streets of an east coast neighborhood.

From the outside, they nailed it. Our first reaction to the photo up top was memories of drinking our way through old Boston neighborhoods. Commonwealth already looks like it's been a Vegas staple for generations. Even a local street dude was overheard observing the building really spruced up this corner. One of VegasChatter's followers tweeted at us an impression of pretentiousness, though, so not everyone's fallen head over heels yet. That tweet's since been deleted so perhaps the pretentious was a bit presumptuous.
