No More 'Heart and Soul': FAO Schwarz Has Closed at Caesars Palace

March 1, 2010 at 7:09 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

It's a sign of the times as the giant wooden horse in front of FAO Schwarz rolls on out of Sin City.

The mega toy store at The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace closed at the end of January, another victim of the craptastic economy. Yes. We hate to break it to you but there will be no more dancing like Tom Hanks in "Big" on the giant floor piano. :(

Just like Las Vegas, FAO Schwarz hasn't been through the best of times either, having filed for bankruptcy back in 2003. The toy chain was then bought by Toys R' Us in 2009 after shuttering retail locations in malls across America. Las Vegas and New York were the two outposts that remained. But now FAO Schwarz is choosing to focus on the flagship store in NYC and its website instead.

The three-story space occupied by FAO will be demolished for renovations and according to the LV Sun, The Forum Shops hope to put in a national retailer who wants to establish Las Vegas as one of their flagship stores. Any suggestions?

Psst! You’ve got until 10 p.m. tomorrow to take advantage of BOA Steakhouse and Sushi Roku in the Forum Shops at Caesars super-slashed, pocketbook-friendly 50 percent-off food.

Normally, we’d raise an eyebrow in salmonella skepticism at the thought of such cheap raw fish, but the trendy Japanese restaurant and the LaLaLand outpost steakhouse are celebrating their fifth anniversary.

Clink, clink and cheers to Innovative Dining Group for making Las Vegas a more delicious destination.

Skip The Crowds and Order at the Counter of Trevi's Coffee and Gelato Shop

Where: 3500 South Las Vegas Boulevard [map], 89109
November 6, 2009 at 5:59 PM | by VegasMichaelT | 0 Comments

We don’t know what your definition of convenience is, but we know ours - Trevi’s Coffee and Gelato counter at Caesar’s Forum Shops. We mean what we write.

Located next to the "Fountain of the Gods" in the middle of the Forum, this little counter stand is the epitome of a tasty godsend.

People have been known to miss it (hence why we’re telling you) and tourism can be thick this time of year as we head toward the holidays. Plus the Forum shops get especially busy with window shoppers, but keep an eye out for this side extension of Trevi’s Italian restaurant because their counter offers the works.

Think carefully about what you want as so much is available for the asking - the delicate lemon sorbetti, the heaven sent tirimisu gelato (every guilty ounce of Mascarpone cheese and cocoa you could imagine is there for the senses), espresso, Italian sodas, cappuccinos and frosty smoothies that all fall under $5!

It’s a great deal, and best of all, service, no matter how busy the restaurant might be, is as quick as a defeating round at Three Card Poker. So in short, addictive refreshments, prompt attention from a friendly counter gal, and affordable eats in an otherwise unaffordable casino make for a very happy mouth indeed.

Poetry Nightclub Vows To Open Again on October 1 in a 'Better' Location

July 29, 2009 at 9:07 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

There sure is a lot of changing happening in Las Vegas this summer. Just when we were getting over the closing of Social House, Prive and to a lesser extent, The Sapphire Pool, came news that Wolfgang Puck's Chinois restaurant and the upstairs Poetry nightclub inside the Forum Shops at Caesars were closing as well.

The LV Sun reports:

Branden Powers, a partner and marketing director at Poetry, said he understood Chinois would surrender its liquor license this week and that would force the immediate closure of Poetry since it operates under the Chinois license. "Our future is tied to their future," Powers said.

There's no word on the relocation of Chinois and it may never re-open in Vegas. Besides, aren't there enough Wolfgang Puck restaurants in this town to satiate us anyways? But according to Poetry's website, the club will re-open again on October 1 in a "new, bigger, and better location." The club even says it's already in the process of moving, remodeling and securing its permits.

Meanwhile, the Chinois spot and Poetry space remain vacant. Hmmmm...let's play matchmaker here for a bit. Might we suggest putting Social House into this spot? As a PURE Management property, Social House can be close to the flagship nightclub, PURE. And you know how much Vegas loves raw fish and dance music. Watch out Tao....

Vosges Haut Chocolat for the True Chocolate Connoisseur

Where: 3500 Las Vegas Boulevard South [map], 89109
July 23, 2009 at 7:12 PM | by Erika Pope | 0 Comments

Inside the three-story, most recent expansion of the Forum Shops at Caesars, you will find what might be the most sophisticated, highbrow (if there can be such a designation) chocolates we’ve ever seen.

Vosges Haut Chocolat infuses its delicacies with rare spices and flowers from all over the globe. Part of its mission is to uncover and celebrate the exotic flavors associated with the world’s diverse culinary cultures by blending them with the finest chocolate available. This is what they say about their mission:

The Vosges Haut-Chocolat mission is to create a luxury chocolate experience rooted in a sensory journey of bringing about awareness to indigenous cultures through the exploration of spices, herbs, roots, flowers, fruits, nuts, chocolate and the obscure.

This is what we say: “Mmmmmmm. That’s good. Kind of strange, but good.”

Why The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace Are So Kid-Friendly

Where: 3500 Las Vegas Boulevard South [map], 89109
July 1, 2009 at 6:19 PM | by Erika Pope | 0 Comments

Whether your kid’s still small enough to carry in a sling or old enough to nag you for your car keys and credit card, the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace is sure to keep the kiddies entertained. Aside from that, the Forum Shops have been named most profitable mall in America for well over a decade, which means it’s got great stores and is well trafficked. In other words: It’s a people-watching bonanza.

But back to the kids. We’ve compiled this handy list of some of the reasons why The Forum Shops is a great place to take the kids:

FAO Schwartz: ‘Nuff said. At this famous toy store, you can make like Tom Hanks in “Big” and dance on the giant floor piano. You can also effectively bribe your kids to behave on the plane ride out here by promising to take them to FAO Schwartz.

Talking Statue Shows: There are two of them, one starring Bacchus, god of the good life, and one about the brother-and-sister brats who angered their father and caused the fall of Atlantis. They both feature kind of retro, Disney-esque animatronics – not the most cutting-edge production value you’ve ever seen. Nonetheless, people of all ages line up to see them at the top of the hour.

Admire the Hand-Rolled Beauties at Casa Fuente

Where: 3570 S. Las Vegas Blvd. [map], 89109

· “A woman is an occasional pleasure but a cigar is always a smoke.” Groucho Marx

· “Happiness? A good cigar, a good meal, a good cigar and a good woman - or a bad woman; it depends on how much happiness you can handle.” George Burns

Burns and Marx, great men of comedy who were forever associated with the “cigarro” as part of their routine, truly understood the beauty of the “small roll of tobacco leaf for smoking” as webster.com so simply puts it.

To the untutored nose, that’s what a cigar may only be, but for the rest of us who see a fine cigar as fine art, we know the best place to appreciate a stellar rolled one is in a cigar bar - here cigar aficionados can congregate and trade great stories centered around their obsession.

So let’s cut to the business at hand. While there are some amply suitable cigar bars in town, the high water mark that stands above them all is the Casa Fuente located inside the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace. This is not up for discussion, ask any cigar smoker in town and they will confidently tell you that Casa Fuente simply rules the proverbial fine smoke roost.
