Good to Know: The Golden Nugget Has Special Parking For Your Motorcycle

May 17, 2012 at 6:21 PM | by | Comments (0)

We're not motorcycle owners, riders or lovers by any means, but when we self-parked at the Golden Nugget the other week, we were impressed to see a special spot for motorcycle parking near the stairwell.

Not so surprisingly, the Golden Nugget is the headquarter hotel for the Las Vegas BikeFest happening September 27-30 this year. But still, it's good to know that the GN has your hog covered.

Also good to know? The Golden Nugget will validate your parking ticket at the casino cage in the back. It's a little trek from the parking garage, but do you really want to pay for parking in Vegas? No, we didn't think so.

Inside the Golden Nugget's Wet and Wild Pool Scene

May 11, 2012 at 7:18 PM | by | Comments (3)

Pool Season is officially here and whether it be a Monday or a Sunday, pool scenes up and down the Strip are getting busy.

Take for instance, the Golden Nugget. We stalked popped into the pool area on a Monday (no key card needed but there was a security guard at the door) and found it pleasantly thriving. There were still a few open chairs here and there (including the coveted shallow water lounge chairs) and thankfully, you could still see the water. Yet it wasn't as deserted as we thought a downtown hotel on a Monday would be then with plenty of people milling about, placing bets, playing Marco Polo, etc..

Then again, this is arguably the best pool scene downtown with poolside gambling, a water slide that runs through a shark tank, a 16-and-older upstairs lounge and separate infinity pool, The Hideout and plenty of places to quench your thirst. So what are you waiting for? Dive in!

Room rates for the GN this weekend are just $99 a night. Next weekend gets a little pricier and the hotel is sold-out on May 26, the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend. But we found rates under $100 again at the end of June.

Where Do You Get Lucky In Vegas? (And, Where Do You Not?)

April 30, 2012 at 5:47 PM | by | Comments (7)

Now that we know where you like to gamble, which casinos are the luckiest for you and which seem to be cursed?

We know that, in the long run, gambling odds will even out. For example, if a game of blackjack offers returns of 96% then playing long enough we'll eventually lose just $4 of every $100 we wager. Of course, few of us will sit and play at the same table long enough to attain true odds. It's more likely that we'll hit a string of wins or losses and move on. With that being said, we can understand that many (not all) of our wins and losses are really a matter of timing.

Our gambling at Aria is minimal because we never seem to win at most games we play. Maybe it's the constant shuffle machines at blackjack or maybe it's the cold feeling we get by the decor and maybe it's just bad timing. We don't always lose here, but we lose a lot more than we win so we tend to avoid it unless visiting friends want to check it out. The same cannot be said for the Golden Nugget where we've never had a winning session on any game.

Downtown Roundup: Work Underway on Bar 46, Drink and Drag Delayed (Yet Again), And More

April 9, 2012 at 1:15 PM | by | Comments (3)

Something tells us this new downtown bar just might be heavenly.

Last week, we told you about the newest change coming to Fremont Street -- Bar 46, a new indoor/outdoor gaming pit-slash-bar now under construction at Golden Nugget. (Click here to spy the renderings.) But, we didn't know just where we would find it -- until now.

VegasChatter friend Ted Newkirk sent us these pics over the weekend to lend some perspective. They show that Bar 46 will be located close to the northeast entrance of the hotel, just beyond the indoor/outdoor Starbucks. You can also see that the exterior wall has already started to come down.

Golden Nugget To Debut New Bar, Wynn Climaxx's Prematurely, And More

April 5, 2012 at 7:54 PM | by | Comments (0)

Just when we were thinking it was a pretty slow week, we've got more Vegas news than we know what to do with.

First up, the Golden Nugget is joining the downtown makeover club. It's announced plans for Bar 46 (rendering shown above). We're not completely sure where it will be located, but Golden Nugget reports that the "slick new table games pit and bar" will open onto Fremont Street. Look for its debut this summer.

The Golden Nugget More Like The Smokey Nugget Today

March 15, 2012 at 5:46 PM | by | Comment (1)

In some weird Vegas news, The Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas was the victim of arson today as a small fire broke out, forcing evacuation of guests from the hotel's upper floors and leaving one person critically injured. However, it might have been that person's fault.

The injured man, a hotel guest, was found unconscious in a 22nd floor hotel room, according to the AP. And a Golden Nugget rep says the guest should not have been in that part of the hotel because it was under renovation. The rep also added the fire was "intentional." The plot thickens but we're guessing someone was pissed off about losing too much money while gambling.

Get Your Mardi Gras On In Vegas

February 9, 2012 at 7:32 PM | by | Comments (0)

If those college buddies haven't yet committed to trekking to Mardi Gras this year, the New Orleans trip probably isn't happening. That doesn't mean it's time to resign to Google Imaging for body paint and bead pics with one hand while sucking Doritos off the other. Which reminds us we did not miss those commercials this year.

Spending Mardi Gras in Las Vegas is more than catching Rio's Show in the Sky, streaking through The Orleans, throwing back jello shots at any of six Vegas Fat Tuesday locations, or heading downtown to Mermaids and La Bayou to start your Mr. T bead collection. That's just the first few hours of the trip, kids.

Las Vegas has more in store, letting us get more than our fill of Mardi Gras -- and rich, fatty foods -- around February 21 this year:

One Of The Safest Bets on Fremont Street?

Where: 129 E. Fremont St. [map], 89101

Witnessing tourists do double takes is all part of the Las Vegas people-watching experience. But, it's a particular type of reaction you'll discover at a very particular ATM within Downtown's Golden Nugget casino.

Across from the Hand Of Faith, the world's largest publicly displayed gold nugget, sits a very special ATM. And, its been happily confusing visitors for just over a year. Gold To Go, takes your cash and spits out the gift that keeps on giving. Real gold bars, ranging in size from one gram to one ounce, can be purchased and then dropped into a slot, just like a pack of cigarettes. The prices fluctuate based on the gold market are are updated every ten minutes.

Dreaming about Casino Nirvana

September 21, 2011 at 12:28 PM | by | Comment (1)

When we go to Vegas, we rarely spend time in just one place. This is obviously because Vegas has so much to offer from a variety of properties that each have a unique and different feel. But more than that, it’s because no one place has everything that we like about Las Vegas. To talk about everything we like in a Las Vegas property would take up too much time in your day, so we’ll just focus on casinos. If we could design our perfect casino, these are the pieces would we incorporate from various Las Vegas properties.

Video Poker from M Resort - We love that we can play video poker and enjoy microbrews at the 32 degrees bar at M Resort. Fewer and fewer bars are comping drinks while playing machines at the bar, and even if they do, those drinks are usually bottom shelf booze. At least at 32 degree we can get our microbrew fix while playing a very reasonable 8/5 Jacks or Better game.

Getting Tanked At The Golden Nugget

Where: 129 East Fremont Street [map], 89101
August 25, 2011 at 1:27 PM | by | Comments (0)

The saying goes fish out of water but for us once in awhile the sight of a human in water is what stops us in our tracks. Sometimes it's expected, like the Silverton Casino's mermaid, a kid sliding through the Shark Tank pool at the Golden Nugget, or the future humans in the Hard Rock pool.

Our most recent Kodak (video) moment came at the Golden Nugget's other tank: the giant fish filled one between the Rush Tower's check-in desk and the Chart House restaurant. We spied a couple scuba divers giving the glass the good scrubbing that Hard Rock pool needs.

Downtown Vegas: Can You Dig It Now?

August 10, 2011 at 2:58 PM | by | Comments (6)

When we first started visiting Vegas our friends made sure we made a trip downtown each trip. Everything was old, cheap, dirty, without pretense, and kind of fun.

We loved going to El Cortez for .25˘ roulette or $3 blackjack and dented cans of beer. Instead of cocktail waitresses power walking through the casino whispering "drinks," "cocktails," "coffee" like most Strip properties, we were greeted with "Can the El Cortez buy you a drink?" HELL, YEAH, THE EL CORTEZ CAN BUY US A DRINK! We always made sure we had a can of beer - dented or not. This was something that made El Cortez special. We loved it. We loved the grit and feel downtown.

Unfortunately, a few years after we began our annual trips to Vegas the worst thing happened - downtown started cleaning itself up. We're all for change, but then El Cortez removed the burnt felt on the blackjack tables we grew to enjoy. Most of the other casinos started to clean up, too. The Golden Nugget was the first to renovate and the first place we stopped visiting. We went downtown for the grit. Not this cleaned up feel that we could get on The Strip. Our feelings for Downtown Vegas turned 180 degrees. Because of the changes we stopped going downtown. Much, not all, of the grit felt as if it was gone.

Renovations downtown have been going on for years. While it's not the same downtown we came to love years ago, the reinvention has been great. In our time away, the casinos are mostly cleaned up, but they have learned what their niche is. For example, The Plaza may have a sweet remodel, but they know to pay homage to the history of Las Vegas with Oscar's. Oscar Goodman's planned steakhouse overlooking Fremont Street may be more of a museum than a steakhouse, but that's one of the main reasons people go downtown. The Plaza is also bringing in Island Sushi, which is a place many Hawaiians know and that locals have come to love. My visit gave me one of the best breakfast experiences I've ever had.

We're happy that the casinos still have their low limit gambling which is definitely a draw for us because, as you know, we like gambling. After giving the casinos time to get grimy, we get the feel that the casinos are old again.

Godard It, Another Addictive Slot Machine

Where: 129 East Fremont Street [map], 89101
July 20, 2011 at 2:05 PM | by | Comments (5)

Shiny new slot machine releases never cease to get our fingers pulsing and wallets itching. Not all new slots are widely released while others sometimes quietly roar under the radar for a few months. Godard's Rockin' Olives falls into the latter category having been introduced at the 2009 Global Gaming Expo before rocking rolling out late last year.

We only recently saw the slick slot in person for the first time at the Golden Nugget. Our first impression was oh my god(dard) but not quite WTF. We stored the fact that artist Michael Goddard had his own slot and passed on playing the first time around. But when we saw the same young lucky lady still playing the slot two hours later, we thought it might be worth a spin.
