The Tropicana Is Shifting Rooms For As Low As $28

A brand new room for $65? Not bad

The Tropicana is changing and it wants you to know about it. Not content with doing a multi-million dollar upgrade on its Paradise Tower and ditching Dirk Arthur, it’s just dropped its room rates to a superlow starting price of $28 and bunged in a free upgrade as well.

ravelzoo brought this to our attention: between 7-10 March (yes, book quick) and 3-7 April you can bag a double room for $28. And on March 11, 22-24, 28-31, and April 8, 18-22 and 24-29, they’ll cost you $35.

The Tropicana Is Looking Like a Hooters-Hard Rock Hybrid

Where: 3801 Las Vegas Blvd. South [map], 89109
January 25, 2010 at 7:33 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

Oh heyyyyyy....Vegas.com (via the LVSun.com) was able to get a sneak peek at the model renovated rooms that are coming to the Tropicana in a few months.

The hotel is finally updating the rooms in its Paradise Tower, which have reportedly remained unchanged since 1985. Whoa.

The rooms will include 42"flat-screen TVs, "an incredibly comfortable mattress", a chaise lounge and artwork from Cuban artists. Looking at the new digs, we are getting a little excited for The Trop, even if the rooms remind us a little bit of Hooters with a twist of Treasure Island and the fact that the Trop's new peppy website reminds us a bit of the Hard Rock.

Do You Have to Dress Up for 'Let's Make a Deal?'

Where: 3801 Las Vegas Boulevard [map], 89109
December 8, 2009 at 1:39 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

Wayne Brady is taking a break from Making %@it Up and is currently hosting the new-old TV game show, Let's Make a Deal which is filmed at The Tropicana and airs on CBS at 9am (Las Vegas time!)

If you were a fan of the original game show in the 60s and 70s and grew up watching the reruns in the 80s, you could get excited by this new incarnation which is far less annoying that the new incarnation of "Price is Right" with Drew Carey. And attending the show could be a fun way to kill time during the day in Vegas.

The great news is that the tickets are completely free. Tapings occur twice a day, starting at 11am. The bad (or more good news depending on how much you love costumes) is that to be selected to participate in the deal-making with Wayne, you have to be dressed in costume.

'Xtreme Magic' Pulls Cheese Out of Thin Air

Where: 3801 Las Vegas Blvd. South [map], 89109

Dirk Arthur will go extreme on your behind with his magic tricks. He's serious.

It's funny how when you're at home, you never say, "Hey, let's do dinner and a magic show tonight." Yet in Vegas, it's one of those things that suddenly seems like a cool thing to do, with corny magicians getting top billing at hotels all along the strip. The Old Vegas Tropicana fittingly has its own resident cheesy illusionist, Dirk Arthur, who brings out his own litter of big cats for "Xtreme Magic," as seen on David Letterman (as Arthur likes to name-drop).

"Xtreme" is one word for it. The dancers in the show are extremely bad. In a town that attracts showgirls to perform in Jubilee! and acrobats to join Cirque du Soleil, you'd think that it would be easy to recruit some good cast-offs. The special effects—mainly the thick smoke—are extremely overdone. And Arthur's jokes fell flat; a dated dig at Dan Quayle was met with blank stares. But it wasn't all misses.

Will The New Tropicana No Longer Be Called The Tropicana?

Where: 3801 Las Vegas Blvd South [map], 89109
July 21, 2009 at 6:42 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

We were so stoked last month to hear that the long-in-decline Tropicana would be getting a much-needed $100 million renovation. But the new look might not be so easily achieved.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that the new owners of The Tropicana Las Vegas are fighting to hold onto the name. The feud is extremely messy to understand and it involves a bunch of new and old owners, debtors and creditors, all of whom like the name Tropicana so much they use it as their company names.

But basically the current owners of the Trop--new corporation that was formed solely to buy the property and is called Tropicana Las Vegas--believe they have the right to call the property by its well-known name without paying any licensing fees. The old owners, Tropicana Entertainment, wants $10 million for the right to the Tropicana name for five years.

The battle will now be played out in courts unless some sort of settlement happens. And what that means for us Vegas visitors? The renos to the Trop will be on hold. Ugh. We could probably care less about The Tropicana name. Yes, it's an important part of Vegas history but the sad condition of the hotel in recent years has done way worse damage to the name. Perhaps it's time to start fresh. Or could the new owners get away with just calling it "The Trop?"

The Tropicana Will Finally Get a $100 Million Renovation

Where: 3801 Las Vegas Boulevard South [map], 89109
June 5, 2009 at 1:32 PM | by Erika Pope | 0 Comments

Once the pinnacle of Las Vegas hotel-casino glamour, the Tropicana seemed to lose its luster once the mega-resort revolution took hold on the Strip. While big plans for a huge renovation and expansion a couple of years ago teased that the Trop might become the largest hotel complex on the Strip, the economic turmoil in the last year pretty much put the kibosh on any such grandiose reinvention.

The Las Vegas Sun reports the newly tapped Trop head Alex Yemenidjian plans a $100 million renovation of the hotel’s rooms, casino, restaurants and convention center. A Forbes profile of Yemenidjian indicates he used to hold high executive offices at MGM Mirage, the company that owns MGM Grand, Bellagio, Monte Carlo, Mandalay Bay, and five other Strip resorts. We hope that pedigree means the Trop has a good chance of finally joining the rest of us in the 21st century.

”South Beach Miami” is the ambiance the powers-that-be are shooting for with the renovation. That’s a far cry better than the current one, which can best be described as Emphysemic Lounge Lizard. In addition to renovating the existing property, two new restaurants, a nightclub and a casino expansion are planned, as well as extended footbridges connecting the property to the Excalibur and MGM Grand.

Lots of people come to Vegas looking for Big Pussy. After all, you only need to walk a few steps on the Strip before you’re confronted by any number of advertisements promising "All Nude Girls!" and "The Hottest Strippers In Town!" But if you’re really looking for Big Pussy in Vegas, there’s only one place to find it: The Soprano's Last Supper.

This Sopranos spoof at The Tropicana pulls in all of your favorite goombah characters—Sil', Paulie, Uncle Jun', Dr. Melfi, and the big man himself, Tony Soprano, for a 90-minute live show that incorporates singing and sing-a-longs, dancing, and interactive fun.

The Tropicana Closes 560 Rooms Due to Plumbing Problems

Where: 3801 Las Vegas Blvd S [map], 89109
April 24, 2009 at 11:28 AM | by juliana | 0 Comments

If you're have hotel reservations at the Tropicana for this weekend you could be moved off to another hotel thanks to a recent compliance snafu concerning some of the hotel's plumbing system.

The hotel's Paradise Tower, 560 rooms in all, has been closed until the hotel can earn compliance for some plumbing renovations that were done way back in the 1990s. Yeah, the '90s. And someone just noticed that the plumbing fixtures were out of compliance. Right before another busy weekend in town. (Hmmm...does Tropicana have any enemies?)

Guests are being relocated to other rooms that weren't affected by the renovation. If there aren't enough rooms in the 1,800-room property to accommodate all the guests, they will be moved to other resorts, Thacker said. Thacker said midweek occupancy has been low but weekends full, meaning the property is likely to lose out on weekend revenue until the problem is resolved.

Tropicana had another low point earlier this year when the Folies Bergere closed down. But while the Paradise Tower is out of commission, the rest of the hotel is fully functioning. Room rates start at $49 per night during the week and only about $109 on the weekends next month.

Did you have reservations at the Tropicana this weekend? How did the hotel handle it? Were you moved to a new hotel or just into a different tower? Let us know all the detes here.

Hooters at $199 is Your Best Last-Minute Option

Where: 115 E Tropicana [map], 89109
April 17, 2009 at 6:13 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

Like most weekends in Las Vegas, there's a heck of a lot going on. We decided to do a last-minute look at hotel rooms and one of the cheapest hotels we found near the Strip is Hooters for $199 a night on Expedia. There's also The Tropicana which is going for $190 a night. In this case, we'd advocate the Hooters hotel which has a little bit more action. Plus there's no male revue inside the Tropicana.

Other properties like the MGM and Mandalay are $300+ a night while the Venetian is asking $500+ a night.

When marginal properties like the Excalibur are charging $225 a night (and that's not even for their renovated rooms), you know finding a bargain in this town is going to be tough. Then again, if Excalibur has some of the cheapest cabanas in town this could work out in your favor. And don't forget about the all you can eat, all day long $25 buffet.

Folies Bergere, Bare Breasts, Go Buh-Bye

Where: 3801 Las Vegas Blvd South [map], 89109
March 30, 2009 at 10:47 PM | by jaymi | 0 Comments

In the T & A News Department, Vegas visitors apparently need more than T and A now that Folies Bergere, the Parisian topless revue at The Tropicana has closed. The last show took place on Saturday. March 28. It had been a staple on the city's entertainment scene since 1959.

The lack of clothing up-top is thematically ingrained into New York New York’s Zumanity (billed as "the sensual side of Cirque du Soleil"). But now, the only topless girls you’ll find in town working, and working it, in sequins, feathers, and a Mac counter’s worth of cosmetics will be at Bally’s, as part of the last remaining true showgirl experience in town, Jubilee.

Of course, a trip to any of Las Vegas’s "European-style" (which is fancy-speak for "topless") or adult-oriented (ditto) pools--Sapphire Pool at the Rio, BARE at The Mirage, Tao Beach at The Venetian, Moorea at Mandalay Bay--will yield a bounty of bare breasts, if that’s your thing.
